Odyssey trailer - thoughts?

Not much to add other than what has already been said.

However, having participated in a number of alpha and beta builds from other games that were close to the scheduled release date over the years, what we played was pretty much exactly what we got when the game finally shipped.

Bummer.
So what is the alpha like? Is it the same as we saw in the video?
It hasn't arrived on my PC yet so I haven't seen it - should I be concerned?

I was just thinking that .. Cmdr Thrust (Bradford) hath arrived, ahead of schedule as usual!

The comments generally have a grain of truth in them and I'm sure FDev will be watching with a lot of interest. Maybe we Commanders (not me obviously) all like to think our AI is the stone cold centre of the Stellar Forge Universe but I've been watching this game's architecture develop for a little while now and I can tell them, that codewise? We aint! And neither is that soldier over there.

Mess with Dr Kay Ross - and Sarah Jane Avory (is she still around??) - at your peril says I.

Cmdr Thrust (Bradford) is never late, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.

Although I didn’t listen to the demo (straight away any fake roleplay tacticool speak starts I cringe up inside like complex origami before I can hit mute) it seems the attempt at pretend stealth has backfired - people are thinking it’s brain-dead AI, etc. instead of the AI not actually caring because the players were friendlies at the start.

Perhaps the team should’ve roleplayed a bit of the old, “let’s walk right down the Main Street, brazen it out” before doing the B&E?

I think the trailer should be re-released with Miss Grenfell’s commentary anyway 😁

When I listened to the interactions between the community commandoes I was reminded of the stilted chat during a demo of the Division 1.

For those that might care...

I think it's too easy to hang a label on something (calling it a pre-alpha) to save face if a product isn't quite ready and you show it anyway.

If FDev found what we saw last week good enough to let us see it, do you really expect the alpha to be so much better?

With things coming so soon now, I don't.

Mind you, I would be very happy to see that it is but I'm going to temper my expectations for now.

Edit: FDev could be playing their cards close to their chest and deliver an alpha that is far more polished than the gameplay we saw last week just to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Somehow I don't think that's what will happen though. I guess we'll see at the end of the month.

So the pre-alpha Odyssey gameplay trailer is out.
You see three devs raiding a base then flying away.

My thoughts:-

Animation is poor. Players walking are just pure cringe! It’s uncomfortable to watch.
FPS element looks worse than, well, every single other FPS game out there.
Bases will be procedurally generated - does this mean the same old same old scenario again and again?
Lots of unrealistic elements to the trailer, particularly the NPC behaviour. And I’m pretty sure this will get dull quite quickly.
Oh, and no VR.
Gotta say, I was kind of neutral about Odyssey. After seeing this, I could not care less for it at all!
FDev have got it very very wrong in my opinion. Start with the ships. That’s why we play, to fly space ships. Start there, let us walk in our ships. Let me see where I sleep, where I live, all that stuff. I want to see the cargo hold. Let me look out of all the windows that aren’t part of the cockpit.
What about manual ship repair? Let me float outside my ship and fix that dodgy laser that keeps breaking down.
All that stuff!
That’ll do for Odyssey 1. Then build from there.
Sorry FDev, you’ve dropped a ball here...
Mediocre FPS gameplay.

How is the majority of the mechanics, gameplay, depth and immersion suppose to compete with the myriad of dedicated FPS titles already available?

I see FD creating a number of generic mission types, with mediocre AI NPCs, with frustrating balancing issues, all underscored by slow paced gameplay (ie: Undertake a mission, and it's ten minutes before you can even start).

After a couple of months many CMDRs will grow tired of it, and much like Multicrew, leave it to collect dust most of the time... Meanwhile, in the back of their minds those players will start wondering what the outcome might have been if the the largest development ever for ED (those hundreds of man years of effort) had instead been used to raise the bar across core game play elements finally after 6-7yrs....

I hope I'm wrong... I fear I'm not...

I'll wait until the alpha is on my PC before I make any kind of judgement, although I liked what I saw even in this 'very old build', but that may be just because I am really not bothered if the FPS isn't 'ultra-realistic' but just 'video gamey' - we each look for that which interests us and expectations will be varied.

I do suppose it is much easier to berate something than to praise the efforts made, even when the information given indicates that it isn't current or 'polished'.

I kind of like that myself. Plus isn't more efficient in teamplay? "Bandits at 2 o'clock" as opposed to "wassaaaap!?" ;)

So that's a big ten four from the back door. Don't 10-55 if you want to stay alive and I'm gone good buddy. Zub. (hehe)
I’m not saying it’s bad - just that it’s not for me. Generally the only co-op games I’ve played have been with people in the same room or on-line with friends - so we passed information to each other in a fairly normal fashion, not like we’d just binge-watched every Vietnam film going 😁
