ANNOUNCEMENT Odyssey Update 2021

My biggest concern is simply all the new “firsts” PC commanders will have over console ones.

Let’s not forget it was a console commander that was first interdicted by Thargoids. This was huge news. Now console players will likely not have that honor on foot for story.

Agreed, but its the same situation for other games as well. I'm a big fan of Stellaris and on console, we are currently two* DLC expansion packs behind PC at the moment.

* But MegaCorp releases on console on January 26th. My criminal interstellar empire will be born that day, oh yes!

Pretty sure there will be no "first on foot tags", in already colonized systems of the bubble anyway.

If previous updates are any indication, it is more likely they will get rid off also from those last "first discovered / mapped"-tags still remaining in the bubble.

If you think about it, it is pretty dummy to "first discover /map" anything in a system with already people and space stations in it (with npc´s flying around), it is rather immersion breaking than anything else...

If it was my choice I probably decide to delay the whole lot until next Christmas and really work on upping the quality of the update an add some additional features like walking around our ships. PS5 specific features, all us ps5 owners know what we want added. An may be weather. An a few more secrets for us all to find. An comets, if they aren't already in!

no thanks. Playing the alpha for 3 months just to have all progress wiped so I can start over upon release sounds idiotic. It clearly sounds like they’re having difficulty making this acceptably playable on the console hardware that was already mid range 7 years ago. The PC version seems to be coming along just fine. Why punish the rest of the player base unnecessarily?
To me that sounds you'd be fine with immediately playing a potentially very buggy, imbalanced Odyssey release? Because I find it very concerning that they seem to aim for a release straight after the Alpha. And many others, like me, would prefer a later, clean release, than another outcry and press debacle over a rushed release because a vocal minority asked for it. In the end that's FD's decision though

If you're gonna jump straight from the Alpha to full release on PC, which this sounds like, I'd recommend thinking about making that release a public beta instead, and pushing the release back. After all, there must be a reason you're calling the Alpha an "Alpha" version, and a well-polished release without major hickups would do a lot of good to your reputation I believe. Since so far on most big releases we've seen a flood of issues from all directions.
It's not going to be the kind of short alpha we've had recently, it is going to be phased with content introduced gradually. I think this is one of the reason the consoles are pushed back, they are only going to do this sort of in-depth alpha on one platform, then apply all the changes and balancing etc made during that period in to the console versions, after the PC release.

IMO.

Alone, I could not understand how a pandemic could affect the development of a computer game? Especially in the United Kingdom ... Where the standard of living and medicine are at the highest level. I can't understand what the problem is to organize remote work on code, graphic design, etc.

Or then they could make Odyssey first as scheduled, and add stuff and improve it in other ways later on, just like with Horizon-DLC.

I'm ok with the console delay, don't want another Cyberpunk release bugged, and my Birthday is in October so it helps to have it geared toward the Fall. o7 Fdevs, Good Luck!

Thanks for the update Arthur. Chuck Handgun would agree with you! ;)
I play on PC, so look forward to the Alpha in the spring. I appreciate and understand the frustrations for the PS and Xbox players, but I am sure that they would rather wait than have an unstable product.
If the PC version also has to be delayed further, then so be it. I am of the opinion that you should only go to full release when it is fully ready and never before, especially with something on the scale of Elite: Dangerous and the Odyssey expansion.
Thanks again and stay safe.

The delay is unfortunate but expected and understandable, at this point. I do wonder if it is worth bothering with the last-gen consoles at all, however. Wouldn't it make sense to drop support for them and accelerate support for current-gen?
So those who do not have the funds to buy the latest shiny from Sony or Microsoft should just be discarded because you have the latest generation? Nice...

As a console player on XBox this is very disappointing and worrying news. I have a feeling now that I can't shake in that ED Odyssey might NOT ever get released on console. Why the split on platforms, doesn't make sense. It also doesn't help that there has been no gameplay shown on consoles either, no showing of the new planetary tech on XBox one or PS4, nothing. If this turns out to be the case then I hope FDev have the decency to let us console players know sooner rather than later and not string us console players along on empty promises of such a great DLC that we console players might never get. I hope I'm wrong but I shall wait and see.

I guess it is a much more time consuming and difficult to coordinate your work with other devs and the game as a whole from home / distance, than just walk at office straight to the other devs to solve issues.

Totally understandable, in fact it was already predicted due to this damn pandemic, in return, it could launch more daily Devs from Odissey and show the new mechanics of the game, it would be an excellent distraction for the delay😉😉

Looking on the positive side, as a pc player but also in terms of finding out more info:

  • alpha likely starts in 2 months, end March?
  • alpha content released in phases, which to be honest I'm excited to see.
  • pc release by end of May according to the stock market info.

No. Assuming that a multimillion business can't handle with a covid pandemia when it was raging for a whole year isn't rational. But if you choose to believe in FDev's excuse - carry on.
A business in UK, one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic, currently (frankly) COLLAPSING under the 50% - 70% more transmissible strain.

People are dying in large numbers. Who cares about a game.

I've know Red Anders for quite a few years now and I have no doubt he'll have no issues in me referring you to his post to another clown who had a similar "argument"....

Now off you pop before your village sends out a search party.

Can't say I'm not disappointed but if you can't get it running smoothly on PC then Console has no chance.
Was the Alpha Pre Order available on consoles as well?

As a console player who watches all the major PC streamers in this community I can give you the answer to that easily.
The graphics are so much better on PC! Showing Console footage will scare the life out of PC players.
FDev is promoting the game, so showing footage from the best platform is a reasonable decision.
