ANNOUNCEMENT Odyssey: Update on VR and Ship Interiors

Thank you for the good news on VR. Perhaps on the way toward accessible ship interiors, we could get an x-ray view in the hangars, that shows the layout of the interior passageways and internal components? Could be a low poly tease of things to come, and be in the same vein as fan works of a similar nature (FRj and Nebhotes, in particular)

So what is it I'm Really glad your working on improving the game, but stop to think for a second. So your main focus is vr right, which is not the right focus ok so think from the console perspective we do not have the vr. . . At ALL so why put all development in one section of the update that majority can't use, we on console and specially xbox who have not got vr have been waiting for space leggs to be released to breath new life into the game, as you keep nurfing all the fun activities that it becomes a new job, as how hard it is to accumulate credits for insurance passanger transport missions are not worth it as they are so low, then to put these 20,000ly jump missions and i would say only 12% of players would actually attempt them, so yes the update us great that its going to breath new life but your priorities are not in the right place, work in interiors for everyone and put vr on the side as it is not bloody important, please please please think of your player base as a whole not just your wallet warriors that have a vr headset and a well made gaming pc, so in short I want to to put a only 1 full day to discuss with everyone yiur priorities because you have so many more players who are willing to go the extra mile for you, but us that do we seem like we get leftovers and not prioritised with everyone and left out.... you full know you can add there stupid vr after i see at least 70%or more that don't use it so, just give that thought, everyone likes fair play now its your turn, and i apologise for the long text

I don't think there would ever be a discussion at Frontier where they said 'Right we can only do one, and we have to choose between VR or Interiors'. I also don't think the two are even comparable in development anyway, enabling an ingame screen would take considerably less developer time than modelling all interiors, designing worthwhile gameplay for said interiors and all the logistics that go behind it that most people wouldn't even consider needed.

You also make it sound like somehow the VR players have got one up on all the other players, they haven't. They are receiving exactly the same content as everyone else, console included

Chunk of complainy player base: "NO FDEV, IF I CAN'T WALK AROUND IN MY CUTTER, THEN IT'S ALL OVER, I'M DELETING ED AND NEVER PLAYING IT AGAIN"
FDev: "Okay, fine. We'll do ship interiors."
Chunk of complainy player base: "NO FDEV, YOU MAKE ME HAVE TO WALK FROM MY SRV TO THE COCKPIT, IT'S ALL TOO GRINDY AND YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE DONE IT."

They honestly can't win.

Your whole premise here is "your main focus is vr right". But it's the opposite, they have decided not to remove the VR functionality and provide a non-VR transition so VR people can still use it.

It's the definition of the main focus being NOT vr (but allowing vr to continue).

Wow.

The vocal minority of VR players complained and Fdev gave them what they wanted. I doubt they will do the same for ship interiors.

Options > Settings > Gameplay > Ship Transition > Select Odyssey / Horizons toggle

Job done. Was that so hard?

I want ship interiors. I need them.

I think MOST players need ship interiors, even more than VR

Because not everyone can afford the game + VR kit that costs $1000 dollars

but I can afford cheap graphics and good gameplay

and SHIP INTERIORS IS THE LEAST YOU CAN ASK FOR

god.

i dont want to counter strike in this , i want to explore in my ship

Any news or updates on PS4 VR support?

Note: I originally bought Elite Dangerous and the PSVR under the impression that it was already supported, and then declined to return the PSVR headset due to the impression that it would be eventually supported.

I'm happy to say, that despite the lack of PSVR support, I have nevertheless become a MASSIVE fan of Elite Dangerous!

However, I will admit to having been put in some very awkward situations with friends and family due to Elite's lack of PSVR, which may come as a surprise to some. I've had to explain that, while yes I acquired a PSVR headset so I could play Elite Dangerous in VR, I cannot however play Elite Dangerous in VR! Moreover, sadly no, I am unable to show anyone the nearly life changing experience that is VR in Elite Dangerous on PC, or even its budgeted VHS extended-play recording equivalent on the PS4.

Perhaps even more awkwardly, having to admit to others how I've never quite gotten over the feeling that I've been lied to by a dev team I truly respect and admire.

It just sucks that PSVR support was indeed developed by FDEV but never released due to quality concerns regarding its performance on specifically the PS4's original platform. Which, if I were more like some people on these forums, I would be complaining that PC VR support should be REMOVED until such a time that FDEV felt comfortable releasing VR support for console! HA! Which honestly sounds like it would be much more consistent with FDEV policy.

Regards and thanks for the update,
Tom

Guys, you should have said 'Cockpit VR or no buy'. Not just 'VR or no buy'.

There's clearly some issues with navigating the interior in VR and they don't have a way of overcoming this at the moment. I'm sure it would be looked at in future, but as far as I can see, it isn't a priority to Frontier, so don't hold your breath guys.

I think this is a good solution. I have one further request - make it optional to use the flat screen projection when driving the SRV. For many VR users, myself included, the SRV movement is just too extreme and induces nausea, so this would be a good alternative.

Have you guys ever considered the possibility of this whole Odyssey idea flopping because you absolutely doesnt understand what "space legs" means for your customers?

I can tell you, it took Blizzard 2 years to get their stocks back in place after their Diablo Immortal nonsense and their show certainly costed a lot of money.

Just a recap:

If you want to sell this game promoting "You can walk on planets" i suppose you know NMS has been working on this kind of feature for years and i wish you good luck trying not to be known as "sh.itty version of NMS" with all the dusty planets and bio grinding.

I'll probably not buy this DLC, unless it's required to walk on ships in the future IF i had not switched to another game until then.

No thanks Frontier, i'm disapointed.
Wait .... are you saying, no Odyssey on PC ?
;)

Ere, I suggest you read up on what a skybox is. You can't fly through a skybox in games.

Personally I wasn't expecting both tenuous atmospheric planets and Elite feet. Getting both is a massive bonus.

I was over egging the pudding yes- yeah, it's not a skybox, it's a cool effect with much more complex graphical techniques to make it.

my point is, if you said to a random gamer that this games lets you fly in planets with atmospheres, they are highly unlikely to expect what they are delivering.

Thanks for the update @Arthur Tolmie.

It's great to see the team at Frontier listening and making this compromise on how VR will work in the interim, and I hope they go on to create a high quality implementation for on-foot gameplay in VR.

Regarding ship interiors, whilst it is disappointing, I was wondering if you could clarify and confirm if this means there are no plans to implement walking around ship interiors sometime after launch, or failing that, if you'd be able to let us know if it's at least still in consideration for the product roadmap?

Thanks.
