Odyssey VR specific bug reports - please contribute!

Well there's this now on reddit as well but it is being downvoted, mystifying as that is:

Ah well...

As Arioch said it's more prominent in some because of the cockpit layout and the canopy shape, so in some ships you just don't have as many or as large shadows in your field of view to notice it that much.

It very well could be a different issue to the SRV one, but we're probably better off grouping them under one issue to get the necessary votes in as that seems to be a rather hard thing to do for a while now.
My thanks to whoever the Reddit user is who posted that (it’s not me, I’m arioch_rn over there) but they’ve got it a little bit wrong - the issue is now Confirmed so it won’t Expire.
(Edit: hmmm, deleted post and deleted user 😅)

Maybe it’s being downvoted by people who don’t agree with canvassing for votes?

I've taken a pair of screenshots for the disappearing ship shadow bug and appended them to the issue report:

The pilot chair shadow can clearly seen to be different.

Also the shadow of the strut is missing. I'll see if I can find some time later today to also add more shots, I have left my ship for months now on an thin-atmospheric planet with adequate lighting to show this problem immediately.

(In fact I always load the game after each update, fly it around the planet, see that the issue isn't fixed and close the game until next update...)

It’s not just the strut shadows that disappear, all the shadows except the pilot chairs are gone - notice how the deck by the chairs and in the foot wells lose their covering shadows.

Thanks for taking the time to add to the issue report, if you can 👍

Yah, I'm just pointing out the most obvious part. The lighting of that planet I mentioned above really shows it, it's almost epilepsy inducing if you fly fast since the toggling seems to occur faster (I imagine it's some sort of optimization triggering when the ship moves through areas of a grid or something like that).

It’d be cool to find out what’s causing the problem - I wonder if it’s anything to do with shadows having two different settings in the options now?

Just need loads of votes for the issue and then we might get a bit of insider info in the monthly Top 20 bug report post 😁

Now I just need some other VR bugs actually fixed so I can vote for them!
😁
Celebration indeed - they’re currently at positions 113 & 122 of the popularity parade, so they could use a little voting assistance 😅

Hopefully we’ll get an idea in today’s Issue Update about when the VR FSS thing will get sorted, which should free up quite a few votes.

Edit: …and it looks like we’re looking at post-Update 10 before they even look at it (as well as other non-performance related issues) or even if they are going to look at it more 🤷‍♂️
Currently this is not possible due to how the camera interacts in VR. We're absolutely recognising it as an issue, however this is at the moment secondary in priority to performance improvements.”

I’m not sure this is the right place but don’t want to start a new topic about it…

Has anyone noticed that AA settings don’t actually seem to do anything in VR? Off and the highest setting looks the same. Also, is there a setting to change texture load in times?

I’ve been neglecting this thread for a while because I’d basically given up hope but performance is looking a bit better now. Unfortunately planets still look terrible. With texture pop-in and simmering jagged surfaces when landed.

I’m not looking to have a go at the devs… just wondering if there is a solution

AA not working correctly is the second-highest voted for issue on the Tracker:
…and it’s not just VR with the problem. The last Top 20 list notes that performance takes priority:
Investigation into further improvements is set to continue, however secondary to performance improvements. To a degree, aliasing has been mildly improved somewhat due to planet texture generation changes, rather than an anti-aliasing system change.

As for slow loading textures - the only ones I currently see are related to https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/31610, but that’s a case of the textures not loading correctly instead of just slowly. I’ve had the occasional landscape freak out in earlier Updates (the “Minecraft” blocky landscapes and LOD issues) but I’ve always put those down to the ongoing performance problems that affect flatscreen as well, and I’ve not seen them in a while. If you’re seeing it constantly then it could be worth submitting an issue. I’ve had a quick look at Issue Tracker with the search keyword “texture” and there is a current blocky ground texture report and some Expired ones that may be what you’re describing.

The terrain generation slider might also be worth having a fiddle with. Terrain shimmer has massively improved since Odyssey’s release - but is still present, especially if using the new upscaling methods in the game.

Thanks for that. At least I’m not going mad!

I will play with the slider and also check Elite is on my fastest drive in case that might be causing slow texture loading.

It seems odd that this issue still hasnt been fixed, its such a prominent bug. Is it only affecting VR?
Technically it has been fixed - once - because it’s an old, old bug that has resurfaced for some reason 😅 Six years ago when it was happening it was also affecting TrackIR users as well, though I’ve not seen any reports from them this time.

Hopefully it will get (re)fixed soon - it’s fairly high up the voting chart (currently #56) so it should be very high up the current VR issue list.

I‘ve got a new strange one. I have lost “control” in the Galaxy Map In Horizon(not tested Odyssey) basically i have no mouse(works in the menu) nor does my HOTAS buttons for say “plot/cancel route”
I fired up the game with a previously plotted route I couldn’t cancel it . Typing in a new system it would just stay stuck at the plotted route despite making the right sound.
Changing back to pancake mode everything’s fine.

Hmm, It couldn't just be the mouse-pointer-still-active-on-the-desktop-making-it-so-that-I-just-clicked-outside-the-window-and-lost-I/O-focus issue, could it? -I get that just about every time I go on foot, and try to interact with something. :p

I recall it reappearing multiple times -- pretty much every time there was an update, for a while, and usually fixed a week or two later. At the moment I seem to sometimes get it even whilst in regular flight -- I think that may be down to the extremely low frame rates I am playing at. :p

On another, probably not VR-specific note: Do we have any idea what the heck the stuff in the picture below is? -I get that surrounding shell with subtractive texturing now and again. -This is on an icy body, so I suppose it could be intended to be the debris having gained a crust of ice, only the appropriate shader doesn't work as intended... Maybe it could also be something that is not meant to render out, but only inform the shader somehow..? ...or the object doubling..? Maybe it could be some required texture not loading in for some reason - failing memory allocation, perhaps..? -Maybe related to planetary rings quite often missing texture layers..?
