Offline mode

The way the planet generation system works - in both games! - doesn't really have any connection between number of systems and size of install anyway.

The original 1984 Elite fit entirely into 32k (i.e. 32,768 bytes) of memory and had 2,048 systems ... but with a very small modification to its source code it could have had 72,057,594,037,927,936 systems instead (and apparently some early prototypes of it did)

It would (counter-intuitively, but true!) take more disk space to only include the previously-explored systems than it would to include all of them; your ED install already includes the system data for the entire galaxy - or rather, it includes the mechanism to near-instantly generate the system data for any bit of the galaxy at any time, so quickly that you don't notice it wasn't there all along.
The planetary and star generation is compressible by algorithm, but not the background sim - I think that'd be the main hurdle to take before making anything offline. Static galaxy would be a solution, maybe, but, well, it'd be just like a snapshot forever.

problem is simple... no mans sky 18 quntillion planets is stored on your hard disk

elite dangerous is stored on server hard disks.

you want play ED on localhost? you need atleast 10-30 hard disk with 5-10tb capacity each each. have fun

As long as the game is still online and solo mode exists I don't see the attraction to an offline mode. Other than:
  • Being able to play it in areas with no internet access.
  • Adding gameplay mods and cheats.

I don't see how someone playing a cmdr offline would be able to rejoin the online game without a cmdr reset. IMO that kinda wrecks any desire to play offline.

Poor broadband connectivty is my main reason, mods would be nice. Mainly no dependancy on the internet would be amazing

Those are two big things for me (minus the cheats, as I usually add mods to make a game more challenging). I'm also starting to appreciate the ability to quickly save and exit my games, due to a busy and somewhat unpredictable season of life I'm in right now. Lately my gaming is revolving more around offline games specifically for this reason, despite my continued love of MMOs like ESO.

Oh, and pause too! I've been hitting that pause button an awful lot in recent days.

I agree with you about the mods, I only use or create them to make games harder! I do not allow myself to pause simulations! :)

nah, the entire ED galaxy is stored on your hdd (20GB for ED3.8 or 50GB for ED4.0)
the server side deals with the dynamic interactions between the various components and makes for the living galaxy - mainly the bgs and everything that derives from it, but also administrative tasks like exploration tags.
So surely there is quite an amount of data stored on the FDev servers, but it's not related to galaxy generation but to the effect players had/have on the galaxy

Not everyone has the luxury of setting aside hours of real life to play games uninterrupted. I used to for a season, but not lately.

And technically you do pause a simulation (assuming we're talking offline games) every time you save and exit. Unless, of course, you just leave the simulation running 24x7; which I would actually be tempted to do in a game like X4 someday if I could dedicate a computer to it.

I see, can't be that much then! :) Why the hell did they drop the offline version in the first place!

I just meant Flight Simulator really..! When doing a flight, long or short but without pausing

Straight from Frontier it would be pretty sucky gameplay as an offline single player game. Cool sim but very shallow game. Hooray you can get first discoveries across the galaxy. Perhaps some mods could attach some interesting single player missions or stories to engage with.

That would be good enough for me! :)

As-is, yes, I can see this. But my dream would be that "offline" would actually mean "personal server" like I can do with Minecraft, and if this server was moddable or otherwise programmable, then I think people could make Elite a true sandbox where we define our own systems, create our own BGS with bots filling in for players, etc. In other words, one could, in theory, make Elite into X4 with a Stellar Forge 🤗

But yes, if offline is just empty solo, then that would probably get boring relatively quickly for me personally. Heck, this is one of the reasons I quit 3.8, because all the cool online features like Galnet and CGs have been removed, and players are so rare anymore it's basically offline with a forced internet connection..

"offline with a forced internet connection", this is what ED is to me as I don't play online. I really hope one day it will be possible to play it offline!
Would it not just be like the old days playing Elite on single player?

I wonder if there are or have been any recent discussions at Frontier on bringing offline mode after all of these years..Is there any way we can formally request this or make it happen somehow?!

Apart from a vague promise to think about considering releasing something after they're done with Elite? Not that I know of.

after all of these years
They're still not done.

Is there any way we can formally request this
Send a registered letter to the chief super boss at Frontier.

or make it happen somehow?!
Include a large amount of money.
