Engineers Oh, come *on*...

How about:
-Fly there in whatever has a long range.
-Get a friend.
-Drop the relics for your friend.
-Switch ships.
-Your friend drops them again.
-Everyones happy

If your friend has a Combat ship too you can even bring him some as reward :p

No need. Cargo transfers to the next ship you choose in dock, assuming they have equivalent hold size necessary for what is being transferred.

Meta alloys for me, no idea where to find those just yet, I only know where to find fish.

Meta alloys are from the barnacles, I believe.

So, I got invitations for mostly-useless Engineers - I fly a Vulture, so the only ones I need (to start with) are the ones with mods for power plants and distributors (mods to anything else will likely increase the power consumption, which I have no spare capacity for).

So, off to Khun I go (for Elvira Martuuk), so I can at least get a decent FSD and possibly a boost for my shields. 18 jumps later I get there, and...she wants Soontill Relics.

Only one place to get them - 400Ly away. That's a 72-jump round-trip in my Vulture; nothing's guaranteed to make me switch off my machine quicker than that.

So...yeah. This wasn't mentioned in her invitation, so is there somewhere in-game that we can find this info? If it's the same for all the Engineers, I'm reasonably likely to simply not bother; it puts a crazy (and very much un-fun) barrier to entry on top of the materials grind (which I don't mind so much, because I can at least get those via my preferred gameplay - combat) if they all have similar demands.

I was in the exact same bind when I went into beta... wasn't worth it for me. If they are going to make playing a game that much of a hassle like the old Everquest epic quests that took you weeks to do.. forget about it. As a casual player I don't have time for that garbage.

There are a lot of criticisms I have for this. Put bluntly, it's just poor game design. When you release an update, the last thing you do is put a gigantic barrier of entry against new content. Nothing makes people look away from a game faster then that. Not only that, but then why are there so many NPCs with badass weaponry and shielding and engines? Did all of them dig up meta alloys or Soontill relics? It's both bad design and stupidly unimmersive. FDev really never fails to blow my mind with how little sense or thought goes into creating the actual world from the gameplay. I mean RES is bad enough as a thinly-veiled farming location against wanted NPCs, but damn. One of the biggest updates in the game and they just tell you to get arbitrary rare item? Powerplay was bad enough but I'm somewhat disappointed with my first impressions of Engineers.

If this is just level 1 modifications, what the hell would even be level 3 or 4? This is just flat out dumb design. Combined with the fact that we can't (at least last since I played) transfer cargo between ships, I really don't want to go around looking for meta alloys in my already kitted out Cobra then being forced to rekit it just to get the proper upgrades. I mean talk about grind being fun and all but being asked to get incredibly rare items without any other introduction or context or extraneous information just says how maliciously and poorly designed this was. It's not fun. It's dumb. Sure, I guess it inspires the community to "work together" to get items but at the same time, there's literally nothing to work with, more so just hundreds of players throwing baloney at the wall and seeing what sticks. Which pretty much sums up the player interaction in Elite Dangerous when they're not arguing about Open play ganking and private group safety.

I agree on all points. Not exactly what FD was thinking by putting out a massive update, but then saying, "Hey uhhh first you guys have to discover this item that no longer drops in the same places it has for 6 months."

Seriously?

A quick scan of the bug reports lists several rare items that are no longer listed on commodities markets. It's looking more and more like a bug. In fact has anyone seen any rares?

Yes, look right, engineers info panel. Every engineer has their own page, where the initial mission is listed under all the flavor text. AFAIK the first time I logged on it was empty, but after a hyperjump the list filled up, and I could see the requirements.

He kinda does. Even if he bought a Hauler and found where the Relics are for sale, he has no way that I know of to transfer them out of the Hauler into the Vulture. You have to obtain the commodities in the ship you want to up grade. I see no other way, unless I missed it in the change log.

Edit: It seems I did miss it and it is possible to transfer cargo from one ship to the next. Nothing to see here apart from an idiot eating crow. Sorry and move along. (Blush)

Also, the donation of relics/alloys is a one time thing, once done you're in with the engineer and you don't need to do that particular thing again (unless they ask for more). It doesn't matter what ship you get the initial thing done in.

The requirements for the engineers are a bit off.

While some ask for 100k in Vouchers or 500k in Gold which nearly everyone can produce in a few minutes, others ask for things that are nearly impossible to find.

Thanks about the info about the Meta Alloys, I wanted to unlock that engineer as she is close to where I am right now but guess then I am out of luck.

Btw does anyone know where this Blue something mafia is? It is one requirement for an engineer.

For now it seems weapon upgrades are the easiest to get, while FSD and drives, which are usefull for trades and explorers are nearly impossible to come by.

I can understand where Frontier are coming from, Engineers are meant to be a bonus; something you work towards and are rewarded handsomely for your efforts.
That said however I do agree with you, putting everything behind what is, in my mind at least, a grind-wall sort of kills the enthusiasm.
I wouldn't have minded if the requirements would be required for say, Grade 3 and up - at least then you'd get basic upgrades and a taste of what the Engineers can give you.

I have no problem with the grind, but when the materials to simply unlock the engineer suddenly disappear, I kind of get a bit annoyed at that. I'm hoping it's a bug, but someone from Frontier needs to say whether it is NOW ... not keep us in the dark waiting for a whole weekend to go by.

Sorry, didn't mean for this post to sound like a rant, I've been here (in this community) for a long time, I know how things go. :D

Afaik, Cargo only transfers to new bought ships.
Or is that wrong?

I can't understand the mentality of wanting to devour any new content in a couple of days and then complaining there is nothing new to do.

Who's saying they want to devour all the content?

I just want to see the content.

I also haven't complained that there's nothing new to do.

Seems to me like you're actively looking for something to snark at, and you're seeing everything through that filter.
