ok i have to admit, there may be a problem

You know what's even more pathetic? Whining about your friend losing a free sidewinder.
Nobody cares about the sidewinder. We care that someone's first experience of the game was some jackwagon shooting him for no reason. Honestly who had fun in that encounter? Not the OP, not his friend and probably not even the guy who killed him. 2 seconds of explosions and then on to the next thing. No challenge, no fun. It was just pointless.

Play in open, have fun, keep insurance handy, and get better. That's the mantra I've been using.

If that's your mantra, I'm not sure you're doing much as an advocate for open play. ;) Positive constructive feedback would have probably been a better route. I get that you feel this is / was a non-issue, but the OP is entitled to his opinion too.

In open, there will always be baby seal clubbers out there. If you are trying to apprentice a friend who is a baby seal, don't leave him alone on the ice while you check out the fishing hole below. Instead, bring another friend to watch the baby seal while you make the fishing hole safe for them to enter.

I know galaxy s6 is a nice phone but it's still not powerful enough to run ED, and they don't like me bringing my gaming rig to work. Oh and prowess at PvP doesn't make you right, that's just another form of attempted intimidation.

oh for pete's sake.

get to work. your boss isn't paying you to be fragile on a message board.

You're right... but I had no idea that the seal clubbing analogy could be taken that far. I'm impressed, and at the same time slightly disturbed. :D

Calling me fragile is a poor attempt to cover up your intimidation, and trust me that I don't need you to tell me how to do my job. If you can't discuss something without insulting everyone whose opinions differ from your own and implying that they are in some way "damaged" for disagreeing with you, perhaps you shouldn't be having that discussion, and if insults are the only thing you have to make your case then you don't have much of a case.

I have been interdicted in by a human in Open play only once and this was when I was in an Asp with 100 odd tons of rares, the Clipper CMDR told me to drop cargo or get served, I obliged and dropped 1 item, he said "that'll do pig" and forked off. Could I have taken him with the Asp? Could I have legged it without dropping a Leathery Egg? No to both, no guns and heavily weighed down with shields and hull reinforcements. The only thing that made me get narked was the "that'll do pig" comment. 2 minutes later I was laughing at it.

As for the CMDR that started the thread, what are you doing leaving your wingman behind and unprotected in OP. With you flying in a Python you know your safe...sort of, but a Novice in a pesky 'lil sidewinder stands no chance TBH ESPECIALLY at a RES. You should have taught him the way to use Wings from the start (nav lock and beacon) and BOTH gone into the RES. If it was pants then you could have left and returned like you said you were going to, or jumped to another RES in the System.

Your mate died at the hands of a "superior" pilot because you were trying to be too safe. Sorry if it sounds hard, but its true. Make a Private Group, invite ya buddy, then go from there, if he had started from the BETA, Gamma or release then he wouldnt have had this happen. It's like someone now buying (i'll use the obvious examples) Battlefield 4 or CoD:AW (both are pish IMHO) and thinking they will have a good time...they wont, they will get spannered every single round and wont enjoy the game as the old timers have better weapons, like you in your Python...(I don't even have a Python). Don't let him give up, when your not around tell him play in Solo and make the dosh that way, at least he will only have to worry about NPC pirates, and if he is too nervous about fighting them tell him to set full engines before he jumps to SC, throttle back to zero if he gets interdicted then get ready to leg it and as soon as he can SC away again. He will learn to enjoy it like the rest that play it no doubt

LOL....love my Galaxy S6....can't wait for the AT&T bootloader to be cracked so I can put a leaner ROM in it tho. Despite what they say in the gadget forums...Samsung still puts waaaaaay too much bloatware for my liking...but Touchwiz does run like buttered silk on it.

A Python taking out a Sidewinder without asking for cargo, that isn't wanted, and is chillin next to an RES is an obvious case of a player killing another player simply because they can. The only apparent reason or reward is to irritate and inconvenience someone. It's a good way to ruin a game for someone else. But who cares, right? It isn't like the success of the game depends on players' enjoyment of their experiences.

Most of the online games I've played in my life were ultimately ruined by other people spawn killing, using exploits, quitting in the middle of a battle because they were losing, team mates blocking my target, team mates killing themselves to cause their team to lose, etc. Now why would someone repetitively jump off a cliff to cause you to lose a match? Is it because they legitimately love jumping off virtual cliffs to death for no reward? Or is it because they think that making their own team lose is funny? Is a Python attacking a still Sidewinder a case of a player who just loves fighting anyone, for the sole sake of PVP? Or is it because he seeks to agitate the disadvantaged player? In that latter case, did the Python pilot also battle the more formidable foe (the OP)? Nope. He killed the obvious new guy and avoiding the OP as much as possible. That's not for the love of the game, for the love of PVP. It's because he knows the victim of his shenanigans is most likely to react in a disappointed, even angry manner.

Let's not pretend that because we can't get into someone else's head that we can't possibly discern their motivations.

I got the edge version... looks nice but doesn't do anything special that's worth the extra cost. I'm using the google plus launcher on it coz touchwiz doesn't work right if you rotate it, and coz it's a lot leaner than touchwiz. I really wanna root it so I can run adaway and get rid of the Telstra branding but not sure I want it bad enough to kill off knox yet. Hoping they'll come up with a root method that doesn't kill knox (not likely I know, they never solved it with the S5).

I love these forums. Open players telling people to stop playing open... Yet most of them moan that open is NOT THE ONLY mode. My my.

What the OP's friend experienced was a gank, period. It is totally within the parameters of the game, yes. Is it to be expected? Yes, very much so. Does it make it right? That's purely based on opinion. I PERSONALLY think the Python pilot is a pathetic pilot and would love to meet him in game. But, those people are everywhere in real life, so thus in games as well.

Regardless of what any of us say or think, it's all opinions. And I think you guys are getting too worked up.

I don't want to see people pushed out of the game for any reason other than "hacking". The more people that play, the better off this game is and the more it will evolve. This game is not dynamic at all without a decent player base. So, instead of snapping at people for being offended and disliking something (regardless of whether or not it's a legit play style) Just say hey, that sucks and move on. These forums are far too hostile in places that they really don't need to be.

OP: It sucks your buddy had to get hit like that and that you couldn't pull him out of the fire. I hope for your sake, his and the betterment of the game that it hasn't put him off any. Take it as a learning experience and keep helping him chug along. If you guys ever see me in the deep black and want or need some help, don't be a stranger.

This is exactly the problem - but there are so many people who support and defend the "pvp" it because it's "supposed" to be dangerous. The worst part is people just stick to solo or private group play because of trolls. It isn't player-vs-player when a python is slamming a sidewinder - it's just murder. There needs to be much more severe repercussions from killing another player that is not hostile. Pirates can still do their thing however they want, whether it's limpets, death threats, death, or asking nicely. However, the trolls who kill other pilots because it's fun would have to pay a hefty fee to lose their bounty.

exactly - perfectly put.

And the fact that the python didn't want to fight another python doesn't bother u?

The Python is only a ship, a ship does not "want" things.

This is important here, because clearly you're dealing with a player attitude "issue", and not a game mechanic issue. There will be weird / agressive / non-moral behaviours coming from players in any games that allow for it.

And this game actually allows you to avoid them, by going solo or group. So in the end I really don't see the so-called problem!

The problem is the only mechanics to 'punish' crimes is a very exploitable bounty system. Got a bounty? no problem just go get a basic sidey and let your m8 pop you and then you pop him and you both ditch your criminal status as well as get paid for being jerks.

Ganking/Gireifing for no reason but to 'harvest tears' or for 'troll value' its not a play style its toxic, poor behavior. period.
Piracy Is valid (pirates aren't out for kill counts by the way. the term piracy implies the goal is theft of some form.)
Killing players who belong to the 'Other side' in a combat zone is perfectly valid.
I'd go so far as to say killing player doing missions for a faction the one you favor is in opposition is a valid strategy.

But simply going around and GRIEFING newbs for the sake of it? no. Penalties should be MUCH more severe. and killing should be much worse then Agressing/shooting. this would actually incentivise pirates to take cargo rather then just blasting them from the skies.

*Mind you this only should apply to systems with a controlling faction. Anarchy should be just that. if you are doing your PVE in an anarchy system, bring well armed friends or don't whine.

I don't want PvP removed or prevented, But being a criminal should incur some actual risk. Right now the penalties are a JOKE and those persuing lawful endeavors incur all the risk while they can be preyd on and the jerks and gankers can Ram, Gank, then exploit the bounty system with virtual impunity and not give a single **** about thier lost ships.

Stupid thing to say. Riots tend to be localized in neighborhoods. Baltimore's shopping districts where the rich go to buy tchotchkes - those are well-protected by the police who work for them. Stereotyping a whole city covering 30-something square miles... way to FAIL.

I didn't do that. "The Wire" did.

When I started playing ED around 2 weeks ago, the one thing I was hoping for and which unfortunately never happened, was to be attacked (be it for piracy or just for the thrill of the kill) by a much better equipped CMDR in a far superior ship.

Flying around a huge galaxy filled with cobras, vultures, anacondas brimming with deadly weapons and flown by ruthless cut-throats and murderers in a tiny little stock sidewinder barely able to survive a low speed collision with a rock is great fun. You feel threatened, vulnerable and have to be on the lookout at all times.

I really don't understand complaining about this. It is what makes this kind of game fun, the CMDRs you interact with are real people who behave in any number of unpredictable ways and are so much more interesting than NPCs.

How is this a problem?

If you don't want PvP and you want to play with your friends, play in a private group.

You can't have it both ways
