Okay But Really, Proxima Centauri?

I'd also like to point out that because Hutton Orbital is an outpost and has only small and medium pads, that means it doesn't have a shipyard. Therefore, anyone that tells you that "X ship" can be purchased at Hutton Orbital is engaging in a favored bit of light hazing. It's the Frontier forums version of the ID-10T form.

It's true. The free Anaconda can only be picked up from the Hutton planetary base. :)

It's a bit of a rite of passage for new Cmdrs to "accidentally" take a mission to Hutton Orbital only to realise a quarter of the way there that it's a really bad deal.

I would have congratulated the OP for joining all the rest of us, but he comes across as someone who'd prefer to blame the game instead of having a laugh at his own learning experiences.

Edit: Apologies if I was being a bit harsh. Welcome to the club!

:/ I didn't mean to insult anything. Just a bit cross at the distance and my own stupidity for misreading a Y as an S.

That was certainly my experience. I realised something was up fairly early on, and had a look online. After reading up about it, my dismay turned to amusement and I began to enjoy the journey. It's the sort of thing the game could use more of, really.

As I type this, I am going into my 30th minute of travelling to Hutton Orbital in the Centauri system near Sol for a passenger run mission. I took the mission, reading the target distance from drop point as .22Ls, and thought "Oh jeez, that's pretty close. Should be a peace of cake." I jump about 200ly from the system I got the mission, dropped into Centauri, and started looking around. No sight of Hutton Orbital. "Okay", I thought. "Let's look at the Nav Page then." I open it, and then I see it. Not 22 hundredths of a lightsecond. 22 hundreds of a light year. I need to travel .22ly in Supercruise for a measly 1m.

The point of this thread is to point out how ridiculous some of the distance in binary and higher magnitudes are between drop point and anything you need to get to. In the Erevate neighborhood, there's a star named GD 215. A white dwarf with a G-Type star orbiting at 395kLs. The funny thing is that GD 215 has absolutely nothing at all in orbit around it, while its companion star has everything else. These distances are absurd, and the time it takes to travel these distances is equally so.

So, while I sit here and watch another Let's Play video as I wait for my ship to cross another .19Ly at 2,000c, please know that I disdain this greatly, and my interest in this game has been lessened. I didn't pay $60 to sit here and look at a screen for 2 hours

You are in for a treat! I love the Hutton run. I make it every so often just to do it. I load up my Python with a shipload of goods, pop my Jerry Reed CD into the ship's player, sit back, and relax.

Put the hammer down, and o7 Good Buddy.

We should really consider ourselves lucky! If FDev were are devious as some here say, Hutton Orbital could be in an Anarchy system and anyone doing the run is continuously interdicted by NPC's the entire way. Of course that does lead to new and inventive claims to fame: I was interdicted 35 times on my Hutton run. Maybe even a new mug if you get interdicted x number of times.

Likewise, I'm sorry if I was being a bit harsh. Welcome to the "got tricked into going to Hutton orbital" club!

Added: I might also add that apparently Alpha Centauri was also like this in previous Elite games, with a ridiculously long trek to get to the desitnation. I guess it's a bit of an in-joke for Frontier. :)

"I made it to Hutton Orbital, leaving a trail of dead pirates in my wake. For the Mug!"

It had to be done. It's one of the rites of passage for the game.

Hit boost instead of landing gear and smear yourself on the back wall of the station.
Fly to Sag A in an unsuitable ship
Fly to Colonia and suiwinder back
Get your first big ship stuck in the mailslot
Do the Hutton run....FOR THE MUG!

:D

Just hit the 1.5mLs mark, so I'm getting close. About 75% of the way there

This guy right here.

Except my pride was on the line and thankfully I was in a smaller ship so I committed to it. While making the trip I looked it up before realizing what I'd done.

I now wear my mistake with pride. Because I am one of those who made it there and back again.

I still say that every time there's a real life event involving the Hutton Orbital Truckers, they should make visitors have to walk 6 km on a treadmill before they're allowed in. BECAUSE REASONS.

Thank you all for turning this seeming blunder into something much more than that. I'm glad to be part of the few to have made this run, and more glad still to be part of a community as good as this one.

Nearing on Hutton Orbital, silencing com's chatter. CMDR DanHyder, Imminent Victory's first Hutton Run flight, out.

The time will really fly by now. I've done it so many times, anything less feels like a blink of an eye. I did a bunch of Smeaton runs a few months ago, and they were a cakewalk, being only 1,871,000 ls out. I listened to music, watched a movie on my second monitor, and just enjoyed it.
