Newcomer / Intro old questions from a *new* player ( sorta late to the pilot party here ) ...

How do i know if i'm starting at the proper station?
There is no "proper" station to start from in terms of game progression or a story line. All that starting from inside the starter zone gives you is the lack of all but the most dedicated experienced players intent on killing newbies. Yes, there are loopholes - that lockout only gets activated once you progress in any of the carreer paths and dock outside the starter zone, so if you manage not to progress in any of the career paths, you can return to the starter zone with any ship and loadout you can acquire. Not easy to do, and you'll likely need the help of a friend or two, but possible.

If a player ( heck maybe even me! ) discovers some unknown star system or planet or resource, how does the rest of the galactic community know/hear about it?
In-game, they don't unless they actually visit that system and see your name tagged to the system or planetary body as "first discovered" or "first footfall". Out of the game, the player-operated databases can keep up with that, but won't usually tally with the in-game record as the time of recording will differ.

Or am i perma gated from prior content or ships or rare items, etc. now?
You're not gated from >90%, you can do anything. A few things you won't be able to achieve/collect because the storyline has progressed or those were one-off items available for early access or accomplishment of specific community goals or tasks:
  • Cobra Mk.IV. That's the most hotly complained issue, as that ship was the reward for an early access. Everyone (well, a few people) who missed out on that is complaining to FDev to make it available again.
  • paint jobs or decals that were given out as rewards for participating in past community tasks. Some of those were unique (like those for the long range expeditions), some of those come up every now and then (like the bounty hunter or trader decals for corresponding community goals)
  • there are also a few one-off paintjobs that were available only once on the store or associated with one or the other real life event
  • a few missions that were driven by the storyline and are now in the past. The Salomé story arc was one of them, the Ram Tah missions have at least been available for some time, but at a reduced payout
  • some items that were handed out for completing community goals. In most of these cases (basically all the cases where those items actually make a difference in gameplay), similar versions of those items (like the double engineered FSDs) were later available in the game somehow or have been made available in subsequent community goals (like the festive flak launchers - a "weapon" that doesn't do much damage to your oponent's ship, but creates lots of nice fireworks. Those were given out for completeing the christmas puzzles in the last couple of years, together with ugly sweaters for your CMDR to wear).

In general, though, ED is not a game where you as player can play through the same storyline whenever. The small stories and missions pretty much can stay the same, but the galactic storyline progresses, whether you participate or not. The Thargoid war, as it is now, is different from what it was three years ago.

17. Relating to #16 ^ ... How do i know if i'm starting at the proper station? As in, i want to play EliteD in the correct order-of-sequence ( game lore events or whatever ) , for progression sake. .
....

If starting in Odyssey, you have no choice, the game slaps you down inside a settlement on foot with some money in the bank and you decide what to do from there. If you instead start in Horizons (the live version) then you are deposited in a Sidewinder either in a surface port if you choose the sidewinder that comes with an SRV or on a orbital outpost if you choose the non-SRV equipped one (N.B. I think the Odyssey start has a lot more money in the bank).

As @Ashnak says, there is no sequence of events you have to progress through in the game. Sure there are the two tutorials (on foot and initial pilot training) but you can actually skip them. The game's blurb says "Forge Your Own Path" and it is quite true.

Everything is different in the legacy game, you probably don't even want to install that at all as even the UIs (User Interfaces) are different.

Bear in mind that most of the ED information found on YouTube (and the internet in general) is outdated. People will post guides and details about the game, and never remove or update them when those postings become completely false. If it's more than a few months old, take it with a grain of salt.

It's faster and easier to just learn as you play. Each time you run into a snag, look for recent information about it. The only thing you have to lose is time.

You can't "blaze your own trail" from the confines of a station. Jump in that Sidewinder, and go for it :)

Totally yep i hear ya loud & clear. I'm def. gonna try out everything EliteD has to offer , as best i can. But i also just wanted to collect some intel too, before embarking upon my new Space grind----errr i mean----journey in earnest. 👨‍🚀

Speaking of which , sorry but i have a few more QUESTIONS please ( for anyone who has time to answer, no big rush ) ....

13. Can i only commit/become ONE profession type ( path ) per character? Not saying i want to be a jack-of-all-trades necessarily , but i just mean like if i'm an Explorer to start can i still go do 'bounty hunter' missions or 'mining' missions later too?
Not only can you pursue all professions you can simultaneously hold the highest (honorary) ranks in the competing super powers.

14. If a player ( heck maybe even me! ) discovers some unknown star system or planet or resource, how does the rest of the galactic community know/hear about it? Is there like some serverwide onscreen message pop-up or news-announcement? Or is it just more like some resulting rare items/parts from that previously undiscovered mystery sector start showing up on the economy Marketplace or Map ?
The galaxy and system maps show the name of the first commander to sell that information to Universal Cartographics the only thing I think stays as your first without getting back safely to sell the data is first footfall. Dying/loosing your ship before the sale will loose the unsold discovery and mapping data.

15. What is this "FDev" i keep seeing tons of people mentioning on these forums and also within YouTube vid comments for EliteD ? Is "FDev" like some secret player or game-mod ? Or is it like some derrogatory inside joke/slang curse-word?
Yes! Actually as has been said it stands for Frontier Developments and is their trading abbreviation on the stock market, also referred to as the Devs or Frontier.

16. What is the supposed "starter zone" ( starter station? ) that apparently is now "broken" and cannot be accessed anymore? ( re: this forum post i read today from another thread mentions it here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...to-elite-after-some-time.625177/post-10371134 ) -- Are we as new Odyssey players not allowed to travel there anymore? And if so, how come?
Which Version of the game you bought and starter ship chosen used to determine which station you started at, later some alternate locations were added, later still to keep nasty experienced players at arms length players were started in a permit locked region this prevented players with any rank at all of entering, Odyssey introduced a new way of starting. I have never been in the starter zone since it was set up but I believe it is still where Horizons players start. You might be able to travel there as long as you haven’t achieved any kind of rank however the only thing different about it was that it was locked in the way it was.

17. Relating to #16 ^ ... How do i know if i'm starting at the proper station? As in, i want to play EliteD in the correct order-of-sequence ( game lore events or whatever ) , for progression sake. But i'm confused as to the difference between the "Legacy" version of the game compared to "Horizons + Odyssey" . Should i not have started with Odyssey on-foot like i already did? Am i missing out on too much or will i be able to backtrack & explore the same as any new player regardless of Odyssey? Or am i perma gated from prior content or ships or rare items, etc. now?
The time in the game runs at the same rate as it does here and now so once something has happened it is in the past so lore events are happening now and you can contribute/spectate/ignore as you choose or are yet to happen so you will have those opportunities but ones that have past are over. There are mission chains and the like that can still be done and you can sightsee some things.

Legacy is where they are keeping the previous version of the software running it is similar to where you are but there are graphical an interface differences. It is only going to receive fixes to bugs that actually stop the game working not ones that just make life more annoying for a few people. There is no transfer of information or progress between Legacy and Live and it just consists of Horizons(pc), Horizons(Xbox) and Horizons(PlayStation).

... THANKS again in advance and sorry that last #17 question was so long lol . --- regards, Nee
Don’t worry about it, as the answers were longer.

....

Just to clarify, players no longer start in the starter zone (Pilot's Federation District) in either version of the "Live" game. It is totally broken. If you start in Horizons (Live), you do the spaceship pilot tutorial but then you are taken to the "pick a sidewinder" screen so start in either of those two systems (LHS 3447 or Asellus Primus).

Legacy starts are still in the starter zone.

Yeah i'm still hangin' around up there at Chamberlin's Rest Station ( pretty nice view up there! ) about to finally do all the many SPACE ( flying ) training missions aka spend a few hours testing my trusty Wingman Flightstick and trying to figure out the best keybind layout.

Which reminds me ...
Question 18 ( for anyone ) : After i complete all these space/flying Training missions , i'd like to go check out the non-Odyssey "starter" station. Does it have a specific name? How do i find it within the system/galaxy map? Or do i just take-off and go search "the bubble" ? Or is it sorta moot , since i'm guessing that station is basically the same layout & functionality as the newer Odyssey on-foot station? (aka Chamberlin's Rest )
It's faster and easier to just learn as you play.

Yep i'm just figuring out optimal graphics Settings tweaks and keybinds & such ...but... thanks to replies in this thread, i think i'm just about ready for deployment and umm detachment. ;)

Which also reminds me....
Question 19 ( also for anyone ) : When using the 'emotes' wheel , as well as the hold-down L-ALT 'items' wheel , it sorta feels like my mouse isn't translating or responsive enough while i'm trying to move/rotate my hand clockwise/counterclockwise around that wheel to select each tab. Feels slow to select or off-kilter something. And i can't seem to figure out, in the Options/Settings ui , exactly which mouse sensitivity option corresponds to tweak & test for those wheels?
Not only can you pursue all professions you can simultaneously hold the highest (honorary) ranks in the competing super powers.
Awesome and gosh talk about a double/triple/quadruple-AGENT ! 👨‍🚀

Which reminds me yet again lol ...
Question 20 ( anyone ) : During "hyperspace" lightspeed travel , or whatever the EliteD version is technically called , can other PVPlayer ships attack me? ( eh-hem Rian Johnson's SW: Ep8 version ) -- Or do i have to be in regular Space proper to be "vulnerable" to either player enemy ships and/or PVE npc enemy ships?

Thanks again for all the scoop, felow pilots !

18. It is a typical orbital station whose name and location I don't remember but it will be no different to any other of that design and economy type.

19. I bound the emotes to keyboard combinations now forgotten, of the other two wheels the one where you can call a taxi or your ship is fine the other I found unusable and have again bound what I could off it elsewhere.

20. When jumping between star systems the only things that can attack you are the Thargoids, in Super Cruise the faster than light mode for travel inside a system you can be attacked by anything that wants to.
Actually they don't attack you they drag you out of where you were into normal space then attack you.

Take your time going through the pages of bindings it not only helps you learn them but not everything is bound. When you have your bindings how you want them back them up somewhere the game software can't find them, an EMP shielded bunker with no external electronic connections might do. Also rename the binds file to something meaningful then go in and in the second line change the file name there to match the new name.

Never start the game without your controllers being connected and powered up in their original locations or the game won't recognise them and will load in some other bindings.

Horizons starts:

LHS 3447 A 4 - Trevithick Dock (Orbital Outpost)

Asellus Primus (Class F Star) - Asellus 2 - Baker's Prospect (Surface Port)

All surface ports have the same concourse layout even though the ports come in different layouts. The same is true for orbital outposts. (Similarly stations of all three types have the same concourse.)

FDEV are lazy.

When travelling in SC (supercruise) - other ships may try to drag you into normal space so as to attack you (or check you out in the case of security/navy ships) - you can defeat the attempt by manoeuvring your ship to keep the resultant "vector indicator" centred.

That ^ last sentence make me LOL's :ROFLMAO:

And yeah, all these many keybindings options are a bit overwhelming and sorta like a complex side-game unto itself. ( always so fun starting fresh new game, imo )

My Flightstick seems to be working really well so far though, which is a big relief. -- i need to really practice a ton more with COMBAT vs. other ships , cuz even in the basic Training mission my muscle-memory ( from SWG JTL & SW:Squadrons ) was confusing my ability to target & lockon & fire accurately; especially the lead-assist reticle.
Gonna take some time to "git gud".

Great tip, thanks much!

Can't wait 'til i'm ready for high-level ACTION someday. 💫

Maybe (don't know if we covered this here already, a lot of newbies get confused by it) to clarify on @aRJay and @Fnord Velkor 's answers: ED has, while in the ship, three travel modes:
  • sublight. Your speed is limited by your ship, its build and engineering to somewhere less than 900 m/s and can go down to zero. You are susceptible to being attacked by basically anything or -body. That includes, should you attempt to fly to a settlement in conflict, other people (players or NPCs) on foot.
  • supercruise, a.k.a. "low wake". Your travel mode inside a star system, from planet/station to planet/station. Your speed was limited to something between 30 km/s and 2001 c, at least the latter value has been changed if you equip an SCO (supercruise overdrive) Frame Shift Drive (FSD). You are susceptible to attacks by Thargoids (if in their occupied territory) and other ships (no basic difference between players and NPCs, although NPC attacks are usually escapable, player attacks usually are not)
  • hyperjump, a.k.a. "high wake". When you jump from one system to another. Travel speed is undetermined, range is (again) depending on your ship's build somewhere between ~4 and ~80 lightyears (ly) per jump. Consumes a lot of fuel. You are susceptible to attacks by Thargoids (if in their territory), you basically guaranteed to be attacked if you jump in to a system currently under attack.

Default key mapping sets one key for both faster-than-light modes - the actual mode will then be entered based on context (basically, you'll attempt the hyperjump whenever you have another star system selected). That can be problematic sometimes (when your hyperjump target is obscured by a planet, for example), so I suggest, if your layout permits it, to assign two different buttons for supercruise and hyperjump. I use all three (a two-direction plus push button, up is hyperjump, down is supercruise, push is let the game decide).

You can see the Thargoid conflict area in your GalMap. I'd suggest that, unless you have some sort of business there and know what you're doing, to avoid it. Thargoid encounters are usually not survivable for a newbie.

Oh, and players or NPCs: there is no intrinsic way in which ED makes any difference between players or NPCs. You can rob or kill either, or be robbed or killed by either. Penalties and benefits (in-game) are identical. The main difference is that players in general tend to be more difficult to fight then NPCs. Unless you become really notorious and get the - ah, forgot the name, let me call them "super police" - going after you. Those are NPCs with all the stops pulled, and possibly a few abilities that are not available to players.

hmm sounds interesting but then so wait even when i target a random ship out in Space , it doesn't have like a different color-scheme or icon for PLAYERS ?

So does this mean the game becomes way more realistic about intel & data, and then figuring out famous/notorious ( or just familiar ) players & ships & systems, so that you know who to engage with and more importantly who not to attack ?

Two differences, neither of which are unfortunately 100% reliable:

  • players have a "CMDR" in front of their name, NPCs don't. Sort of difficult, though, if you instance with someone from a country where they don't use the latin alphabet and all names from their instance are rendered as unprintable characters
  • player ships have "empty" icons, NPCs have "filled " icons on your scanner. Rectangles for non-offensive, triangles for "hardpoints deployed". Also, not always reliable - I've met players whose ships were rendered as solid icons.

But: if you count on encountering a lot of other players, you're in for a reality check. ED has something like 20,000 populated systems, and far fewer contemporary players. Unless you visit a system that is, for one reason or another, currently a focus of activity, you're unlikely to encounter another player. You can, though, increase these odds by befriending players in-game. Your friends are shown on the galmap (if they're online and in the same group as you), and are given preference when creating common instances.

As for attacking: not a good idea to attack anyone unless you've completed a scan of their ship and they show up as "wanted" or not. Attacking a non-wanted ship will make you rather unpopular with the minor faction who is claiming that particular volume of space as theirs. Of course, if that's what you want (or think you can live with), fire away.

EDIT:

found it:

Commanders have a few visual differences; colours¹ are as with non-Commanders regarding hostile or neutral, but the differences are:
  • Commanders have a hollow icon on the radar, be it square normally or triangle for hardpoints deployed.
  • Commander names all begin with CMDR, and no non-Commander names do that.
    • Mind that there is one very sneaky possible name which begins with Commander; this is not CMDR, though!
  • Many, many Commanders have bright starship and weapon colours not seen elsewhere.
1. Joining a squadron introduces green for squadron Commanders, and joining a wing introduces blue for wing and purple for something hostile to another in your wing.

Awesome! And so exactly how/when am i allowed to send 'friend request' to players in-game?

For example, if i wanted to request 'friend' to the nice pilots like yourself & others who've been replying with answers in my thread here, how would i go about doing such a request? ( keep in mind i'm still just in midst of doing each Training mission lol )
Joining a squadron introduces green for squadron Commanders, and joining a wing introduces blue for wing and purple for something hostile to another in your wing.
That sounds neat and i have a feeling joining a squadron or wing someday when i'm ready is gonna be absolutely crucial , since i don't wanna end up like 'Ripley' floating out in dead Space hybernating without fuel all alone with nothing more than my alien-infested CAT lol

And so exactly how/when am i allowed to send 'friend request' to players in-game?
Whenever you know someone's CMDR name. You can trigger such a request from either the comms panel (top right of your HUD) or from the "social" menu in the main menu. The comms menu will only show you CMDRs you have encountered or even share an instance right now, the "social" menu requires you know their CMDR names.

You can try to add me, either as CMDR Ashnak (out in the deep black), Azzie Elbub (usually around somewhere in the Bubble), Buckyballracing (usually not around, that one is mainly to use as private group for buckyball races should it be necessary). But as I'm currently not active, it may be some time until you get a reaction.

Note the hardpoints deployed, triangular icon on scanner, doesn’t necessarily mean you are about to be attacked some scanners require the hardpoints to be deployed.

Forum names are not always the same as Commander names especially as some run multiple commanders.

Were that [ marooned isolation ] to occur, visit the 'Fuel Rats' !
Yes indeed i been reading about those gamers a bit and i think they sound AMAZING . It's groups like that , along with nice members posting in this thread , that have continued to inspire me and reinforced my belief that PILOT players in particular are----and have always been---typically the most overall helpful community ever in history of MMOs.

ah ok cool thx for the info and i shall try adding your 'Ashnak' version later today!
But as I'm currently not active, it may be some time until you get a reaction.
No worries at all.
I'm guessing it's wise to take healthy breaks every so often in such an intensified & immersive game like this EliteD appears to be?

ahhhh gotcha, ok good to know yep since i wouldn't want to get too itchy of a trigger-finger then and risk unintentionally start Space War 2024 ;)

-------------------
Welp, after restarting the Landing Training mission 4 times in a row ( lol sheesh finally got it lined up properly facing away from hangar bay ) , as well as restarting the 'SRV' planet lander Training mission 6 times before realizing how tiny the blue-safe-spot-to-land-my-ship actually can be on such rocky terrain , i think i'm finally ready to embark upon whatever EliteD has to offer outside the confines of this very tranquil Chamberlin's Rest station.
Once more----err i mean---First time into the breach! 🚀

p.s. Buying & constructing my 1st ship from scratch btw, to allow for maximum digital pride & attachment . Ain't gonna be no "pre-built" packaged bundles for me i tell ya! ( famous last words lol )
