On what do I use the Recon Limpet?

Pretty sure they are for some space-bug related tasks :) I've not dealt with that side of content much, so don't take my word for it.

Which sub-targets? I've tried them on all the hackable comms arrays and signal transmitters but always get the error message.

You scan them with the data link scanner and it reveals a docking port.

So, say you wanted to disable the fighter hangar, you'd

- scan the structure with the data link
- Scan the subtarget with the data link (fighter hangar in this case)
- target the limpet docking port on the fighter hangar and fire the recon limped

Thanks for the explanation. Is the recon limpet, then, used for nefarious purposes only? For example, disabling fighter hangers and turrets before stealing cargo? Or, are there good reasons for using the limpet, such as data collection?

Pretty much yeah. I mean... i hope fd introduces uss in deep space where you need to hack abandoned outposts or alien tech, with a variety of outcomes.

Bummer. I want to use the limpets for research and non-pirate/combat interactions. Hacking abandoned/alien outposts would be cool. Or even hacking installations and getting more lore, like how terminals in Fallout provide background about characters and organizations.

Well, you can hack the comms arrays for high-grade data. They still don't like that, though.

Sub targets on megaships and space installations.

Is the correct answer.

The most common issue seems to be that people either don't scan "hackable" things at all or that they don't switch to a sub-target after scanning it.

Scanning the thing will reveal a limpet docking-port.
Push your "select next sub-target" button to target the limpet docking-port.
Launch your recon limpet at it.

Just to pick up on that.

Recon limpets are NOT used to disable turrets.

Scanning a turret will generate a little icon which leads you to a "Defence System Generator" which you shoot to disable the turret.
No limpets required.

^^ That one.

I missed that bit but yeah, they don't disable turrets. Definitely do disable fighter hangers though.

I take it that when you do this you will become hostile and all the things will start shooting at you?

Everything up to but not including attaching the recon limpet to the ship, or shooting it, is fine.

Recon Limpets/Shooting will turn things hostile. Tank up.

How on earth is one supposed to know this?

By learning from an experienced saboteur. Just like any proper career, like piracy - I learned from the dread pirate Robert.

As for Recon limpets not working on Thargoids, I and me bottle of whiskey can confirm that these are not the limpets you're looking for.
