Open is BRUTAL...

True, but "most people" aren't the problem. The problem is the other ones, and you ONLY find them in open.

I'd be worried if I found another player in Solo... Lol
You also find then in Private groups BTW. For a while. Lol

Back on topic,
I had a terrible run in with a greifer earlier in the week.
He had the audacity to say hi, ask how I was, and even accept my friend request, after a grueling 10 minute conversation, about the BGS!
That's 10 minutes I'llnever get back.

I immediately demand FD nerf the politeness of Open, and friends.
I have too many friends now, it's clearly overpowered!

Strange, went closer to Sol today in Open Mode. 20 minutes later I jumped out of a system with 15% hull after a friendly CMDR used engineered weapons as a way to greet me while I was leaving the station.
Not to mention that that CMDR never said "Hi" or made a o7.

Guess it really depends on where you fly and how your luck with the matchmaking is.

True, but "most people" aren't the problem. The problem is the other ones, and you ONLY find them in open. There are many of us who DO NOT WANT that in our game... not occasionally, not "not most people", not ever. Not coz we are scared of pixel spaceships nor because we think there's a griefer behind every nav beacon, but because we are there to enjoy a game and we don't enjoy that in our game. It's the same reason as many people don't play football, or go fishing, or garden... not coz they're scared of balls, fish, or flowers, not coz they can't, but because they don't want to. Why is it so hard for some people to accept that it's not that there's not some deep ulterior motive or psychological trauma, but simply coz it's not something we want?

I'm pretty sure the topic isn't "my endless justification for solo" there, no? Don't care. Being shot at is the exception, not the rule. There are a ton of threads on that topic. Feel free to keep the hotel frequented there if it makes you feel better. It's this sort of endless arguing tha leads people to have a flawed understanding of open in the first place.

tl;dr - don't care, lets stick to the topic which isn't endlessly justifying solo/ private group. ;)

I play nearly all the time in open (the odd time in a private group when on a exploration trip), and have never been destroyed by another commander apart from combat zones, which is fair and square in my book.
Most people I come accross are polite and nice, and the others just go about thier business. I have had a few run ins with other commanders, but have managed to escape easily enough.

They could make a new mode where you can't send text comms. Fixed. Could put it in with the new PVE mode, the PV(nothing) mode, and introducing the new PV(minus) mode (now without people, NPCS, or text comms). I do get tired of having friendly conversations with total strangers in open. I got cargo to move from A to B. Literally everytime they start a conversation, I lose 20 to 30 minutes of progress. Sounds like griefing to me. Quick, somebody start a poll!

PvN is a good start, but imagine - There are still planets and stars that can grief the player. Sneak up on them and kill them by heat or by surface and there is nothing they can do about it.

So for those I would propose a special mode, called "Big black", which would be completely empty of all things that could possibly hurt player. Something like the cushion room in a mad house. I would also advise FD to disable FA off in this mode, so the players can't get dizzy from spinning.

Apparently the topic is unjustified vilification of people who don't play in open. Wasn't me saying things like this:

Shhhh. Nobody is supposed to know that the majority of people crying about open make up an exceedingly small minority or have never really played in it anyway

or this:

Sadly that "the bogey man will get you all always forever" message tends to get a lot of airtime. Mostly people either say hello, are polite or simply say nothing and go about their business.

so if you want to go off topic and start bagging pve-ers don't be surprised when we respond.

The implied message here is that the majority of players are in solo/groups because of an unrealistic campaign of fear mongering and that the threat in open is exagerated. The truth however is that the people in solo/group know EXACTLY what the chances are of being griefed in open, they understand that the chances are low especially if you stay away from hotspots, and they have decided that they STILL don't want that low chance or to be kept away from the most interesting parts of the game. The "smear campaign" isn't the soloists talking about griefers, it's the apologists blaming the soloists for what the griefers have themselves caused. I keep trying to tell you (and you keep pretending to not understand)... our understanding is not "flawed" to use your term, we don't think it's bigger than it is, we understand the level of threat, AND WE STILL DON'T WANT IT. We're not mistaken, we just don't enjoy the way you play.

That's ok, we don't feel any need to convince you to play our way, nor do we start threads begging people to join mobius, or declare that it's "the only, right way to play", or bribe/threaten/cajole, or that you "can all come back to mobius now", or claim that anything other than "our way" is lesser or inferior, or offer to "coach" players in "the ultimate way to play". We don't even *chuckle in the background*. That's pvpers doing all those things, and we're STILL not interested in playing your game.

It's not us, it's you.

These are good stories, but I want to point out that some people like me often avoid open not because we're scared of 'griefers' or any sort of paranoia, but because we don't necessarily like company. I occasionally play in both open and Mobius - the latter when I want encounters to be rare and surprising.

I'm Mr Badger when it comes to gaming most of the time. "Company? Hmpf!"

:)

You may laugh but actually that is partially why I haven't played in open much till now, trying to line up on the docking slot is bad enough with the noisy pot on one joystick axis and trying to decide wether the urgent text message is worth looking at (we need you to deliver somewhere else) or not (deliver it in 0 seconds) without the added worry of offending someone by not responding to the hail.

Oh and the attack risk is higher in open, not much I have hardly seen anyone in the last two days, but the only time I have ever been attacked upon leaving the no fire zone of a station was yesterday at the CG hand in station nothing came of it from my perspective but an open symbol (commander right) did it.

Open is also the only time that I have departed the hanger and the lift has brought me up just under the engines of another ship I did wonder if I would get fined for loitering before I could get out from under.

Alright, I think you're both stupid. Actually, everyone who pretends to claim 'the other side is are poopie-pants, we are all cool' is fairly off the tracks. There's a perfectly fine topic about which mode is better, if anyone feels the urge to prove the superiority of Open/Mobius/Solo or the inferiority of some other group of players, please use that one and leave this topic alone. Thanks.

Well it's pretty easy really to get over the problem, all you need to do is treat other players just like the usual maniac NPC's out there, but that they are a bit more skillfull. I really see no difference between the odd player killing you and a manic NPC killing you.

The way I see it, is that the worst griefers are the NPC's with the constant interdiction harrasment and then following me to places their FSD shouldn't be able to get too, and then deciding to attack me for no reason.

Lol. So how do you REALLY feel? Don't hold back. :)

Seriously though, you had fun in open, and that's great. I take issue with some of your suppositions and we spoke about that. But is it REALLY so hard to accept (not you personally) that lots of us simply enjoy something else? Why does it always have to come down to insults like "they're scared" , or "they're inept", or "they don't understand the adrenaline rush", or "they're old", or even the latest one "they're mistaken". Can't it just be "they like something different, and that's ok"?

I'd like to thank everyone for posting their experiences on playing in open. It seems like the consensus is 50% friendly, 49% neutral (ignore), 1% (or less) hostile/pvp. That's good to know. I was under the impression it might be 10% friendly, 60% neutral, and 30% pvp.

I have zero interest in pvp. I do have interest in running across other players that are either neutral "go about your business" or friendly.

I've spend almost all my time in solo or group (Mobius, Chaos Wulf's former group) mode - the latter looking like solo 99% of the time. I occasionally pop into open, while docked, to refresh mission boards. I did so the other day in Sothis. While docked, you have no radar, so I couldn't tell if other players were actually around or not most of the time. This time I was sure as I have NEVER seen an NPC Federal Corvette or Imperial Cutter in the game. There were 3 other Imperial Cutters docked besides mine and two Anacondas. I took mine back up to surface, in the hopes of seeing one of them... alas, they were in their cubby holes like I was, waiting for missions. I did get to see a player Anaconda dock (port 2 or 9, just inside slot)... only a player will dock like he did; npcs and docking computers are too smooth.

Anyway, I might start playing in open more, just so I can enjoy a more organic, possibly friendly, experience... I'll just make sure I have plenty of rebuy money first. :)

Because that is how (some) humans simply are. If you dont play in my mode you are a coward/psycho/skilless/griefer/etc. If you dont listen to my music you are mainstream/wannabe cool/poser/unable to listen to new things. I personally care as much about which mode you or anyone prefers as I care about what topping they prefer on their pancakes. And I care as much about any 'strawberry is for psychos, raspberry is for cowards' debate as I care about the mode discussion. There will always be Open-players who will come up with offense theories as to why you play Solo, and there will always be Solo-people telling me I'm probably a sociopathic would-be mass-murderer waiting to happen. Its not a 'mode thing'. Its a 'people thing'.

And who cares anyway. Its not like we'd meet any of them in the game anyway. :p

Fair enough, and well put.

Oh btw... it's lemon juice & sugar, and anyone who likes anything different is a scum sucking pancake philistine. :)

Still waiting on a decent internet connection so I don't destroy any instance that I turn up in. You must all wait until at least November before ganking me at every opportunity as soon as I poke my snout out from a station! (or so I've heard!)

It's not us, it's you.

Can you just not? Every thread it's the same endless trope about bad people on the Internet and they are in open and that's everyone else's fault.

I don't care. Move on. Stick to the topic. If you're not in open then maybe the topic just isn't relevant to your experience? Whatever works for you, great. Good stuff. Let's move on. :)
