Modes Open vs solo

I’ve been looking at it, I know there are other forums. But those are kinda old so I didn’t know if they’re still relevant, I wanted to get some info that’s current in game. I play solo right now on the PS4, I don’t have psplus, I’m just trying to decide if I should get it. So, what’s better about open than solo or vice versa. I know that squadrons and fleet carriers are coming and I’m looking forward to those.
Thanks

Open can be a lot more dangerous. Getting interdicted by an elite Anaconda is not that big of a deal- getting interdicted by an elite CMDR (in literally anything) is probably going to end in a rebuy. As long as you have the funds it’s no big deal. Just don’t buy more ship than you can afford to rebuy a few times. Honestly, the danger makes it more fun. Plus seeing other CMDRs at stations or hauling cargo around in supercruise makes the game feel less lonely.

You get to see and interact with other Cmdrs in open. Most of the time they are friendly or ignore you. Sometimes they will blow you up for no reason. Always fly with rebuy and learn to escape (high wake), avoid interdiction (practice mini-game), or fight (better have a well engineered ship).

Some of the best times I've had have been on surfaces of moons with a bunch of mates, 10,000 LY from Earth. Open isn't all about combat.
Get the Plus thing (the equivalent of Xbox Live Gold I guess?) make some friends in the PS4 forum here, join a group, join Discord, have fun

To get a full-on Multi-Player experience in E|D you need access to open mode. If this is the type of game play you enjoy, you know what to do. If you invest in the upgrade you should also invest in finding a player group. A player group is sure to really help to keep you in touch with other players. Space can be quite empty, even in open, playing as a lone wolf.

Social contact, positive and negative, is the major draw for open play.

I play exclusively in solo. I'm not trying to get ganked by griefers while I am grinding for credits. I don't need that kind of wasted time.

In the way of gameplay nothing really changes in open vs solo. However without a doubt the best times I've had playing this game have been in open, There is just an extra thrill when another cmdr drops into your CZ or Res and you either get to duke it out or you wing up and fly as a team wrecking all in your path.

Plus if you decide you just want to grind out some rep or credits in peace you just swap back to solo.

open is fine and fun. to address the fears some express about 'gankers' ruining their fun understanding how someone can gank you is important.

in order for someone to gank you, they have to see your ship and be able to target you. in order to do that a player must be in the same system and instance as you. if you are in heavily populated systems, especially those during a favoured CG, you will have more interactions thus more opportunity for a random negative encounter. but even if you are in a cg system and get interdicted, if you are able to jump you will more than likely jump to an empty system. not many players carry the gear to follow you and many fighter ships don't have the jump range to give chase for ships fitted for jumping.

i say all of that to say a gank nearly always starts with a random meeting. no one can really chase you unless they already know where you are or you keep going back to the same place. as long as you keep your head up when you enter a system an attacker will not have an advantage over you.

.. wow, Frontier has been busy for update 3.2; so much for no content! And I thought they had their hands full locking systems ahead of a player lead initiative to visit them. Had no idea solo was now open! (lol).

You can wing up which has advantages.
People will sometimes try to kill you but that adds depth imo.
Just seeing other Cmdrs flying around is kind of cool.

Solo is more stable if you have dodgy internet.

I play almost 100% in open.
It feels way more alive and this is the main reason I pay for PS+.

Can you wing up with anyone or do they have to be ps friends?

As far as I know, you cannot 'see' players on other platforms.

To your original question (based on my experience): Solo is for playing against the game. A protected group (PG) like Mobius allows you to interact with other players without conflict between players. Open is the same as Mobius except that you can destroy other player's ships and they can destroy yours.

That's pretty much it.

Depends.

Matchmaking will match you with random people IF your internet and their internet can create a viable connection. If you have friended someone, the viability issue is considered less important than the friend listing...so the game will hook you up...with the caveat that the experience might be sub par.

Don't need open for "full-on Multiplayer".

Can get the same in a PG. It really depends on what people are looking for in Multiplayer games

If you're gonna get ps+ just for Elite, get it for a few months and test the water.
If you decide to go the full hog try and buy it when discounted.
I play solo, Mobius PG, my own PG and open. All modes have their merits.
Good luck OP, fly crazy. o7

Whoops, fixed.
