Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis

…or ARMA: Cold War Assault as it’s been known for the last decade or so.

TWENTY YEARS OLD???

One of my favourite games of all time (I even bought the in-game watch, it’s on my wrist as I type this), some incredible missions in the story (fleeing the Russian patrols through the forest?) and an unforgiving approach to firefights - it’s currently free for its anniversary:

From a time when FPS games were just starting to break out of their corridors, OPFP had entire islands to roam around, vehicles to drive and fly, and the ability to command squads of troops.

Right, I think I’ll go and Steal The Car and then jump in an AH-1 Cobra for a bit of Ground Attack 😁

What a game. That scale was pretty unmatched and the solo campaign absolutely wonderful. I'm not a fan of how ArmA3 is throwing you at the deep end almost straight away.

Even before it launched in full with the editor, I still remember the scenario mod scene for the demo, with people directly making them through the XML scenario files.

I think it's still a better single player game than any of the subsequent Armas, I think the resistance expansion is my favourite campaign from the whole series
