Optimized for XBox Series X

Has anyone heard whether or not Elite Dangerous will be "optimized for Xbox Series X"?

I would imagine that Elite Odyssey will be taking advantage of the new specs, but since the Series X will certainly release before Odyssey I was hoping the current ED version might run smoother (better frame rates, quicker load times, longer high-detail draw distances on planet terrains, etc.).

Fdev haven't even said if it'll run on XBSX(!).

I have no doubt it will though, and I'm sure it will push the hardware as much as it can.

The game will be on the system due to backwards compatibility and Xbox is making it available for many games to have improvements without the devs doing anything in terms of frame rate is all we know.

I would hope that the 1X enhancements set a precedent for dedicated Series X support, but we`ll have to wait and see.

For sure the Series X will improve things off the bat without any code changes. Improved load times, HDR support, and more stable frame rates will all be part of the Series X experience without any patching required.

Elite will run better on Series X out of the box. It will be compatible as every Xbox One game, and it will run smoother in both 1080p and 4K modes. Load times are more determined by network conditions than pure storage speed in this case. I'm playing from an SSD and it's not much faster than from the internal HDD. Any other graphical enhancements, prior to Odyssey or otherwise, is up to the developers. What's certain right now is that Elite will run much better on Series X either way.

We know right off the bat that the console will run it in backcompat mode treating it as if it's running it on an XBox One X. We can assume that performance target even barring any further enhancements.

Now, when it comes to those enhancements, like the Series X backcompat HDR implementation they managed to pull off for even original 2001 XBox games, and being able to run backcompat games at higher framerates, it may be possible to add more polish, and potentially run the game in the One X Quality mode with higher framerates. That's what we can assume will all be available right now with the current client running in XBox One X backwards compatibility mode.

Of course, down the line, if Frontier want to properly take advantage of the new capabilities of these consoles to retain parity with the PC version as they add features making use of newer hardware, we could then see a dedicated Series X and PS5 client perhaps with things like raytracing support.

I think most people would be really happy if FDEV simply added an option on the Xbox version to unlock the frame rate. Very little effort for frontier, big improvement for XBSX owners.
I seem to recall hearing word that Microsoft are working on a system-side implementation for increasing framerate, baked into their backwards compatibility on Series X. Attempting to get all backcompat games running at 60-120, after seeing how well all the older games which originally came with unlocked framerates such as Morrowind, which ran like absolute garbage at sub-30 on the original XBox back in 2002, run on the One X.

The framerate is already unlocked (60 fps max), only it barely ever reaches the ceiling right now, thanks to the potato CPUs of current consoles. But the Series X will probably easily max the game out at 60 fps even in 4K-Quality mode. Honestly that's one of the biggest reasons I want a Series X. I don't know how high the framerate would get if they completely unlocked it, but since most TVs have a 60 Hz refresh rate, I don't think it would be of much benefit. A fully locked 60 fps will still be awesome to have.

I didn't realise that 4k/Quality Mode was 60FPS !

not for this game. I leave my game on 4k quality over performance because the framerate shudders too much for me no matter which mode it have it set to. So if im gonna take a hit, let it be a beautiful hit. Its not constant, but its noticeable.
So yes, i would love to see the performance of this game on next gen.

No it's not. It only could be, because it's unlocked, which means it runs at the highest framerate the One X can push out. But it's rarely ever 60 fps, it's usually much lower than that. However, since the game already allows it, the Series X's extra power will easily max it out at 60 in all circumstances, at least that's what I expect from it. Any additional optimization Frontier makes will just be an extra benefit.

Looks like Elite is going to be the first game I boot up on my Series X....

Now if only we could get an "ultra" mode to add to what we already have....

They haven't said anything but I'm assuming it'll happen.

Im certain they said / confirmed somewhere it would work on XB1X (not that hard to do as guaranteed by Microsoft).

But they (a couple of devs) said in an interview that it may not be enhanced as they want to do it justice if they do a version for XB1X and PS5 and not just compatible with. Similar to VR statement.

But guessing it will run faster and smoother on XB1X just because its presumably better at running games. Ill wait for Black Friday or January sales....or maybe a bit longer til I find out
