Other crowd funded titles worthy of attention

With the success of the Elite Dangerous kickstarter, the results we can get from crowd funding the development of the kinds of games today's publishers are just not up to making are becoming starkly obvious.

I am not sure about the good folks in here but I had largely written off substantial games these days as being too formulaic and aimed at today's teen to mid 20's gamer who appears to largely buy based on similarity of titles rather than originality of content or execution.

So, beyond Elite there is a cottage industry of independent (indie) developers out there with some interesting (and usually deep) game designs that would not see the light of day via EA, or little mention on the traditional gaming sites.

With this thread I'd like to continue to build a list of interesting and potentially notable crowd funded and indie titles that may be of interest to the Elite of the gaming world - the gaming connoisseur  :p

The Banner Saga

So here's a good one... The Banner Saga. This project is already funded and is in an open public beta test right now:smilie:, you can still join in the fun however on the developers web page and get the game pre-ordered cheap, along with a bunch of very nice goodies.

Synopsis:

The Banner Saga is an exquisitely hand-drawn adventure with strategic gameplay, based in a nordic/viking setting. It looks incredibly atmospheric, deep and one of those gameplay experiences you will not forget. Best of all, there is a playable open public beta on right now !!! What are you doing reading this ?!?!? :p

Still here ?

Skyjacker also looks worthwhile; its alot more colony wars and inferno-ish than Elite though. Not a bad thing. The kind of game you load up when you want to just go pew pew pew.

They need help, KS is off to a slow start. They have broken the project into smaller kickstarters to spread word of mouth. This KS is for an in-game engine modeler for their space craft designs; however pledges of (if I recall correctly) $25 and higher gain you the game too, once its done :

And for something completely different, a rather cool looking risk-like game based on the evils of corporatism run riot :

Third time around for them on Kickstater, hope they have better luck this time.

yes, they have a problem with that, lucky Elite got lots of aditonal coverage by BBC and other media, including SC people. or Elite would been half broken there too.

Honestly they seem to be great at creating games but have no clue when it comes to getting coverage via social media and gaming blogs.

It's not their fault, they are really pushing on all media and trying to contact but almost all the sites ignore them. All this crap of social features in the big webpages of the industry is really killing the traditional way of contact with news writers. Besides, seems like if you don't have a big name after your game, something really fresh or lots of social interest it will probably be ignored.

Not a kickstarter thing but is on Desura is Project Zomboid.
I have been following it since the early days and it has had it's ups and downs but does look to be my kind of game.
One of the good things about watching that is how they kept the core premise for the game despite a lot of pressure from the community to dilute it or introduce elements that although popular in other games wouldn't really complement the concept (seems to be a similarity with E:D here), and kept going through some tough times and some self-inflicted disasters, but appear to be producing a unique and fun game.

Race the Sun is an interesting looking title; two man programming team creating a starfox-ish title minus the guns. It's essentially an escape game where you try to get as far as possible before you run out of energy (from the sun).

Fully user customizable level maps. very few backers so far unfortunately, it's dirt cheap, jump in if you can. Original, unique development like this is what makes indie gaming on PC / Mac so much more refreshing than the console gaming scene.

Kenshi

Another one that I have been watching for years that finally seems to be coming together is Kenshi:

Of note is that in the early days I liked the concept so much I was pestering him to 'Just take my F***ing money' but he was like, no it isn't ready. I like that attitude.

Now it is crowd-fundable on Desura, or the website since late last year.

Drifter & Dominium

Did you miss out on the Drifter kickstarter? Wish you had backed it? Well fret ye not, the dev has opened up the game again to pre-order for $10. Have a look here.

Also, last call for the Dominium kickstarter. Its not looking too good for it's funding.
