With the introduction of core mining, I decided to fit out an AspX solely for the purpose. I tried out both Krait's, but their limited cockpit views and lesser maneuverability had me back in the AspX in no time.

The AspX is the perfect little core miner, managing to rake in 50 million in a single run, and its a pleasure to fly amongst the 'roids with its great visibility.

The 6 hardpoints allow for the full compliment of mining tools - even a pair of mining lasers which are redundant for core-mining but fit the RP perspective - and a multicanon to keep any pests busy till the law arrives.

A 2A refinery is fine for core mining, as you only collect 3-4 different core minerals in a planetary ring. This means I can mount two cargo pods (6+3 class) for 72 cargo capacity.

I've tried a few different mining ships, and the AspX is the clear winner for my style. Love the little beastie!

Can anyone recommend what ship I should upgrade to once I have enough cheddar?

Check out the Krait Mk11 - its not cheap, but its a great all rounder, fits a fighter, good for combat, good for medium trading, FSD range not as good as the AspX though.

Bought an Asp Explorer and Diamondback Explorer to try both out and compare. Initially the Diamondback felt so much better, but then I realised that the greater range was easily eclipsed by sad lack of a large fuel scoop. I quickly found any time saved by the range was lost on long scooping sessions.

I can now see why lots of people consider the Diamondback just a very fast short range shuttle, whilst the AspX is a great all-rounder. Huge fuel scoop, bunch of extras for other fun purposes, even some weapons and additional weight. My AspX is hovering at a range of around 62LY - not as fast as the DiamondBack's 66LY but between the two there's just no competition.

Almost feels like cheating that I can now get form Sol to Sag A* in only 400-450 jumps.
