(On the title, as the PlayStation trophy says
)...
I'm currently trying to unlock the engineer Selene Jean, who as you may or may not know, has some of the most Grindy/painful unlock requirements in the game!
Firstly she requires you to mine 500 units of any material, which isn't so bad in itself, it just takes you a week or more of starring at and shooting rocks, which isn't my idea of fun, but the worst part is that she wants 10 units of mined painite, which is extremely hard to find and extremely subject to the whims of RNJeses!!

...
Of course then even when you find places online where other people have found it, it's mostly in RES sites where you near constantly get harassed by pirates...
As a slight tangent, it really annoys me how general pirate attacks and mechanics work in this game, particularly when you're carrying cargo, as you do when you go mining...
Firstly the fact that the local police and bounty hunters don't attack known pirates until they start shooting at you (and others), while even why known pirates scan you, your ship doesn't automatically target them until they start shooting at you (and even then, only if you press "target nearest enemy"), but in particular how incesint their attacks can be even when surrounded by police and bounty hunters, no matter the local security level or how they attack ships they have no hope of defeating....
However the worst thing, in particular when you're carrying important cargo is how bloody hatchbreaker limpets work and how little defence we have against them!
I wouldn't even mind THAT much if they worked the way they currently do IF they didn't pass right through your shields (no matter how strong they are and their percentage!), IF they were pirates "reward" for bringing down your shields, it would be one thing, but they're very o.p. and unfair!
However the Devs clearly didn't stop them targetting the rarest, most valuable cargo, when players won't want to lose the most (while indeed we can't put our most valuable cargo in a special lockbox, that can't say only be accessed without destroying our ships), as when I was mining I had two pieces of painite stolen by bloody pirates - one which really annoyed me, when when I managed to destroy the pirate that launched it and it was left floating in space, however before I could pick it up again, ANOTHER pirate sucked it into their cargo hold and though I managed to destroy the second pirate afterwards, they didn't drop the stolen painite, only some other random things!

...
Anyway, it seems like blind luck how much painite you get from any one astroid, though generally you get a painfully small amount and generally far less than any other mineral!
For example, from around ten painite containing astroids, I got 2.6 units of it, compared to about 100 units of our minerals, however then today, when I was back down to only the .6 units after the two full units were stolen from me, RNJesus suddenly smiled on me and gave me 9 units from one single asteroid!
BUT then I didn't find any more painite in the next ten asteroids I tried, before it was getting too late and I'd to finish my session...
Which is where it's left me now, nearly there on both requirements, currently 470 units of any material mined overall and 9 units of painite in my cargo hold, creeping around the edge of the RES site, to try to get the last bloody unit, while trying to avoid the horrible hatchbreaker pirates, that could send me back to square one!
As said, give how hard and painful it is to get painite, I wish the Devs could have programmed pirates not to steal it at least and give us more ways protect particularly valuable cargo, such as the aforementioned painite or mission related cargo.
(Indeed some people online said that they found painite outside of RES sites, but I never did, hitting my current motherboard in the low RES site of Delkar 7A!)
Anyway happy mining everybody!
