A few things that would really benefit players.
Would be great to have a link explaining how to register for these goals in each comm goal post.
Where to go in the station menu.
Go here, Land, Go To Mission Board Comm Goal etc...
Normally you would not hand in via Universal Cartographics bt in Panel 1 I'm told.

How to claim once you return in your ship menu (Panel 1). Basic stuff for people new to this.
In this instance, given that the description sounds more like planetary rings rather than planets themselves it would be good to make this clear to avoid confusion.
Put yourself in the shoes of a new player and help them navigate the pitfalls.

Would really help :)

There´s a sticky where all the questions are answered.

Where else?

Only hand in at the CG station.

This is my first time trying to participate in a Community Goal event. I must say the official description of how it works, what they want, is rather...wanting.

This event is requesting scans of 5 types of planets. That suggests you Detail Surface Scan the actual planet, and don't bother with scanning any other types planets.

It appears that they accept partial FSS scans, but reward "full FSS scans"...it states..."Contributions will be valued by thoroughness, with full FSS scans & planetary probing completions rewarded higher."

So, I assume "planetary probing" is DSS?

That suggests that "honking" is accepted as the minimum to qualify, but they would like full FSS and DSS scans of the 5 planet types in a system.

All these years and multiple CG events, yet they seem to lack the ability to make the terms clear.

This is all very basic exploration techniques, saying that though not everyone is interested in exploration and some never even leave the bubble.

When entering a new to you system a basic honk or initial FSS scan will reveal how many bodies are within a system.

You then need to find and FSS scan every body to get a full scan.

If you then look in the system map to see what types of bodies and if there are any other items of interest, these will include specific types of bodies and maybe planets with Bio present.

This is where visiting and probing (DSS'ing) individual bodies to gain more information (bonuses) comes in.

If it is a system that has not been visited before and if a system is fully FSS scanned additional bonuses are also payed out, This is all normal play, the CG may be paying a little bit more for specific things and then there is the bonus of a cash payout and a very good DSS scanner.

"To the jewel that burns on the brow of the mother of galaxies! To the whisperer in witch-space, the siren of the deepest void! The parent's grief, the lover's woe, and the yearning of our vagabond hearts. To Raxxla!"

If anyone can help me answer these questions definitively, without guessing or assuming, I'd really appreciate it. As it stands, I've signed up for the CG and turned in millions of credits worth of acceptable data to Universal Cartographics, logged out and back in, and waited another 10-15 minutes -- and I'm still sitting at "0 reports submitted."
The safest place to check is at Trailblazer, sometimes with CG's it takes a while for any handins to populate through to places like your nav panel or if you are on and reporting to Inara.

The legend of Raxxla has been circulating, in whispers, for centuries. The quest for this mysterious place, the location of which is a deadly secret, was said to be the principal aim of the Dark Wheel, a putative fraternity of legend-chasers from the early days of interstellar travel.

The earliest recorded mention of Raxxla dates from 2296, from the journal of Art Tornqvist, a shipboard mechanic based in the Tau Ceti system. He writes: 'Cora comes home soused and raving with wild stories, a new one every night.

Just remember it is only contributions handed in at Trailblazer Echo that count for the CG and be careful that system at certain times of the day will probably have gankers present.

Went to Trailblazer Echo, just happened to get lucky in finding the CG panel and sign-up button; otherwise, I would have never known I even needed to sign up -- it's my first time actually signing up for one in a specific location.

I brought data with me from thousands of lightyears outside the Bubble, and some from within and nearby. Sold it all, piecemeal, to Universal Cartographics at Trailblazer Echo, for a whopping total of "0 reports submitted" in my contributions section of the CG section of the nav panel.

I had a boatload of questions and none of them were answered by the Galnet article or anywhere, really.
  • Is one required to sign up for the CG to participate, or does it count automatically?
All but one CG has required people to sign up first for their contributions to count when handed in.
  • If I do have to sign up to participate, is it only able to be done at Trailblazer Echo, or anywhere Brewer Logistics is present, or just HIP 90578, or anywhere, or...?
I have not yet reached anywhere with a mission board to check this one but usually the CG section of any on ship mission board will let you sign up, if it won’t you will have to sign in at the location of the CG.
  • Where do I turn in data for the CG? There is no explanation, not even a hint in the article if it is indeed Universal Cartographics or not.
Unless told otherwise CG contributions are handled in the same way as you would without the CG it just has to be at the stated location and you need to be signed up.
  • What data counts? "Around the Bubble" is so ambiguous it could mean just about anything. Does this include systems inside the Bubble? Outside the Bubble? What is the distance range that's acceptable? What is that distance measured from? How can I even test this when the CG contributions panel either updates so slowly, or not at all?
  • How long does it usually take for my contribution tally to update in the CG panel in my ship's Nav panel?
The ships panel can be slow but will usually show changes after you have left the station and gone to cruise. The mission board is usually immediate.
I'm not trying to be a complainer, or a whiner, or whatever. I'm legitimately just confused, as always; I don't need to be force-fed the info, but I do need a thread to start pulling on, ya know?

Strange, what does the mission board on the Trailblazer say?

  • Is one required to sign up for the CG to participate, or does it count automatically?
Almost always yes to sign up. In my 2+ years of playing I can recall one CG where you could just turn up and shoot, the rest all required signing up in advance.

  • If I do have to sign up to participate, is it only able to be done at Trailblazer Echo, or anywhere Brewer Logistics is present, or just HIP 90578, or anywhere, or...?

Pretty much anywhere - check the CG missions above the normal missions in a station's mission board, it's greyed out if there are no active CGs.

  • Where do I turn in data for the CG? There is no explanation, not even a hint in the article if it is indeed Universal Cartographics or not.

To earn rewards you must sign up as an active participant before delivering the requested exploration data to Trailblazer Echo in the HIP 90578 system.

Yep, must be handed in at UC at Trailbazer Echo. UC is the only mechanism for handing in exploration data.

Ambiguous descriptions in CGs are.. not infrequent. From posts by others there's no distance limit, so this wording may just be a nudge from Frontier to indicate that you can safely pootle around close to home rather than rushing to kit yourself out for Beagle Point. It may also be a bit of narrative colour, since this CG seems to be linked to the upcoming colonisation feature, which has a 10LY range so will primarily start around the Bubble. Would justify a bit of Galnet blurb along the lines of "Brewer Corp: after the success of our recent cartographical exercise around the Bubble, we have identified thousands of potential targets for Commanders to yadda yadda"

  • How long does it usually take for my contribution tally to update in the CG panel in my ship's Nav panel?
Dunno, it's for sure not instant. I usually check at the handin station I've just made a delivery to if I'm keeping close tabs.

She claims she's found a map to some pirate stash, and all I have to do is loan her my ship so we can go dig it up. maybe we should go find Raxxla while we're at it!' Although Tornqvist's account is the first known attestation of Raxxla, it is clear from context that the myth was already in circulation.

I made a few small edits to the original Galnet post, mostly just for my squadmates who may find the specifics useful.

I'll post it here in case anyone can spot a possible correction in the case that I have made a mistaken assumption, and would like to thank you all again for taking the time to assist me.

A new planetary survey initiative has been announced by Brewer Corporation, calling for pilots to scan locations around the galaxy, including in and around the core systems.

Speaking from the newly deployed megaship Trailblazer Echo, CEO Madelyn Teague made the following announcement:

"Recent events have accelerated plans to explore a new age of system colonisation efforts. Brewer Corporation has proudly supported ambitious projects such as the Colonia Bridge, and worked with other corporations to improve and increase starports across the galaxy. Now we take another step forward in the continued march across the stars."

"Universal Cartographics has partnered with us to collect, analyse and process the very latest exploration data, to help calibrate our metrics for optimal colonisation targets.

Explorers who wish to contribute to the initiative can hand in exploration data (i.e., scans from the D-Scanner, FSS, & DSS) to Universal Cartographics at the Trailblazer Echo in the HIP 90578 system, after signing up to the initiative in the Community Goals section of the Mission Board in starport services.

Contributions will be valued by thoroughness, with full FSS scans & planetary probing completions rewarded higher. Data from the following planetary body types has been requested, and pay out a higher reward than typical planetary body scans:

-Rocky Ice, Rocky, Icy, Metal Rich, & High Metal Content

Brewer Logistics is offering the following rewards as a result of participation in the initiative, which are to be distributed to participants immediately following the conclusion of the initiative:

- All participants will receive a detailed surface scanner V1, pre-engineered with expanded probe scanning radius. Participants must register at least 1 contribution of scan data to be eligible.

- Credit rewards will be distributed to each participant according to their total contributions, on a tier-based ranking system measured against other participants.

"planetary probing" needs clarification. I assume you mean DSS, Detailed Surface Scan?

Rewarded higher isn't defined other than them wanting a full FSS and "probing", but I know when I turned in my first batch of reports, the data sell page said the whole page was a little over 5 million CR. I sold it and received 20 million! Apparently, I got a 4x bonus, but no idea from what, how much, made the difference.

I had DSS for one of each planet type.

I do know I had 3 or 4 systems that were D-scanned, FSS, and DSS those planet types they asked for, nothing else.

Another 2 systems I didn't do any DSS, just D-Scanner (cause I honk every system I enter!) and 100% detected FSS. I had a total of 67 reports. One system alone had 51 planetary bodies! I thought no way I'm DSS all those. I was thinking the FSS wouldn't be complete either, but I opened FSS, and all were detected. Excellent! I had another system that detected only 4 of 11 planets. I left it at that and moved on. I'm still new to FSS and trying to dial in planets so they are detected.

I signed up when I was around 200Ly away from Echo, then used the scans on the way there, 7 jumps, 2 were totally empty. I had a few scans already. I don't recall for sure, but less than 10 systems.

Much like the ancient myths of Atlantis, El Dorado and the kingdom of Prester John, interpretations of the story range from the sceptical to the outlandish: Raxxla has been suggested to be anything from an unremarkable moon to a state of cosmic enlightenment.
