RCT 3 PC Patch List for Consideration

Patch List for Consideration - 1 Item Fixed. Thanks!

Well then.:) I'm not sure if it's "cool" to be doing this right at the start of these new forums, but I'd like to head off negative needs threads with one of the more productive threads from the Atari Forums. I've pasted the entire letter, originally sent on January 6th, 2006, below, along with the susequent items added after the letter was sent.

I applaud Frontier in their continued dedication to RCT3 with the release of Wild! Patch #3, and I'm sure I speak for everyone from the Atari Forums, fan sites, and now here when I say "Thank you!":) I hope that this isn't the end. The letter below may have been started and sent by me, but is a compilation of a LOT of community members, and we would love to see game improvements in these areas. Thank you all, again.

-Keith (LWK)

Original Letter:
Dear Ken Allen and David Braben,

Last Friday, December 30th, I noticed something on the Atari Forums. For all the wishing and hoping that the members were talking about, there was not a single clear and concise list of the remaining bugs in Rollercoaster Tycoon 3. More specifically, things that would be desired and/or feasible in the next Patch. I took it upon myself to start the following list, but in fact only the first few entries are mine. The list was added to by the members of the Atari community that know the game inside and out, I would expect only behind yourselves and the employees at Atari and Frontier. The thread for the list can be found at http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums...d.php?t=507963 for more information.

What is included below are three major categories of Patch needs: 1) Major bugs that hinder the game and are a near-constant source of distress among the community, 2) Minor bugs that cause annoyances or inconvenience, and 3) Suggested tweaks that range from small features that (in our opinions) should never have been left out, to tiny points such as increasing the launch speed on a particular ride. What is not included in this list is new content. It is acknowledged that new content belongs best in an expansion pack, though there are a few Suggestions that come close, but for good reasons.

I was asked in the course of constructing this list to convey several items to you:

First, that while the longest of the three categories is the Suggestions, the Major and Minor bugs are the reason for this list. I feel confident that if most or all the Major and Minor bugs could be fixed or improved upon, the entire Suggestions list could be ignored and it would still be a hugely successful Patch. Of course, the more Suggestions listened to, the happier the community will be.

Second, that more open communication regarding the future of Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 would be beneficial to all parties involved. From working at a county government, I personally know the necessity of public involvement in everything that goes on. Both Atari and Frontier have taken great measures to giving the players of RCT3 what they wanted, but outside of the expansions it seems as though support for the remaining issues is quite lacking. There is at least one post a day since the release of Wild! as to what the next step for RCT3 is and, more often than not, it is mentioned that now that your companies have our money that there is no reason for you to support us. Many of us know (or hope) that this is not the case, but feel that this community, which serves as the base for beta testers, user-based tech support, gameplay help, and as go-betweens with other internet websites, would be better equipped and in better spirits if the "powers-that-be" acknowledged our cries more. We do also realize that you are in no way obligated to divulge information to us, but again, in dealing with the public I know that products and services only get better when the lines of communication are kept open. I hope you all will continue to have a good relationship with us here on the Atari Forums.

That being said, I don't expect a response regarding this list (though it would be sweet and wonderful for all of us), but as long as it is read and considered, I will consider this effort a success. And now, on to the list:

MAJOR (experience-hindering bugs)
Gameplay Related
Fixed! (Wild! Patch #3)- Wild! Patch #1 bug of slowing construction of coasters and scenery.
- Improve on general lag (not attributed to a specific bug)

Windows Related
- Wild! does not create its own entry in Add/Remove Programs
- Securom checking for Original CD too often, causing lag. (Autorun problem?)
- Wild! CD not recognizing that Wild! is installed (related to missing entry in Add/Remove Programs?)

MINOR (occasional annoyances)
Attraction Related
- Wild!- Penguin and Shark Trains missing from Wild!
- Soaked! and Wild!- Waterfalls and Water Surface Rides cannot be placed on the same body of water (bypassable, so should be fixable)
- Wild!- Vertical Coaster Car missing from Extended Coaster
- Wild!- Animal Fences break down too quickly
- Colors cannot be changed on flying carpet
- Changing colors on Chairswing changes lights, actual colors unchangeable.
- Pay attention to the Chairlift. Loading problems, needs single station operation, and needs diagonal track.
- Log Flumes should be able to have more cars than the station allows.
- Log Flume Turntable should act as block brake for itself, not the whole ride. Currently "breaks" the ride.
- Clicking on Insanity only works if clicking on the moving portion.
- Sky Rider displayed in non-inverted coaster menus
- Launched Lift-Hill on Extended Coaster is broken (needs confirmation)
- Stats for the freefall tower rides are still all way too low.
- Check and Fix all flexi-color buttons so that they do the correct thing.

Scenery Related
- Wild!- Peeps not leaving the Ride when the ride is over (seen on some vertical rides and the elevator)
- Wild!- Octopus Fountain water visible through scenery
- Stegosaurus animatronic showing when Prehistoric Theming is not selected

AI Related
- Wild!- Peeps mysteriously getting caught in enclosures
- Fix Peep AI so they ride rides more often (above the improvements already been made)
- Group AI efficiency still needs improving. Deciding what to do takes too long, and Transport Rides still rode for fun too often.

Transport Related
- Water Transport needs more of a "Transport" operation and an optional invisible track to follow.

Mixmaster Related
- Animal Mixmaster shows cannot be saved.

Suggested Fixes (tiny features and significant tweaks that should never have been left out(in our "humble" opinions))
Gameplay / GUI Related
- Keyboard Shortcuts (see RCT1&2 manual for suggestions)
- Multiple Windows in GUI - active one highlighted?
- Error-Catching Code to prevent opening of corrupted game files.
- Inclusion of an Undo Feature
- Install a 'Turn off micro-management' button (or at least allow users to set the level of micro-management they want)
- Make the interface windows and buttons bigger (resizable)
- Load Button for the Scenario Editor in the Main Menu
- Add "Challenge" game mode (basically Sandbox with the finances turned on)

Attraction Related
- At-Grade Railroad Crossings
- Miniature Railroad needs a whistle. Programmed, Assignable, or Both.
- Make individual cars and trains on rides able to have different colors
- Slow down the rotational speed of the Merry-Go-Round for accuracy.
- Loop-O-Plane sequence inaccurate and too slow.
- Need "ghost" car for Multi-Dimensional Coaster, exactly like the Robotic Coaster.
- Add option to assign Speakers as Ride Events.
- Mine Ride speed maximum is way too low. Needs an increase.
- Ability to remove paths under Flatrides. (option in ride settings?)
- Freefall Tower launch speed is too low.
- One of the colors on Mini Golf is locked and unchangeable
- Giant Slide is too tall and too popular, far beyond what is seen in real parks.
- Animals (especially hippos) should be using the water for paying, bathing and drinking (living, too, in the hippo's case).

Scenery Related
- Wild!- Auto Terrain Leveling should be optional (default to OFF)
- Optional turn collision detection off for all scenery items, building blocks and paths
- Need Standard Naming Convention for all official wall sets.

AI Related
- Peep Groups Optional
- Zookeepers ineffective: Either improve cleaning speed or decrease animal pooping.
- Improve usefulness of Security Guards: currently little visible need for them.
- Increase attentiveness to inspecting rides by Mechanics and speed responding to broken rides.
- Optional turning-off of peep thoughts. (Not just display, but thought generation)

Transport Related
- Allow for change of speed on Transport Rides (and other powered tracked rides), to provide a more scenic trip
- Allow for a "no visible track" option for the 4x4 and Elephant Transport Ride

Mixmaster Related
- Make Fish-eye view for Particle Editor optional
- Enable lasers to read simple graphics and letters
- Laser Editor needs an Erase Feature

Please feel free to speak out in the thread linked above or contact myself or anyone regarding specific items on this list for further clarification.

On a personal note, I believe that I speak for the community when I thank you all at Atari and Frontier for your work on Rollercoaster Tycoon 3. I hope that this list will be accepted in the spirit in which it is intended, that being from a group of dedicated fans that are unwilling to see the fun end just yet. Thank you again, and we all look forward to hearing from you in the near future. -LWK

Sincerely,

Keith (LightWarriorK), on behalf of the Atari RCT3 Community

Yes, double post, sorry. There's more to say and it went past the 10,000 character limit. Here's the rest:

Continuation of Items:
Items since letter sent:

Major
- Sunscreen AI Bug from Soaked! still persistant. Occupies dozens of peeps per stall for extended periods.

Minor
- (From previous list) Extended Coaster Launched Lift Hill does not accellerate as it should. Way too slow.
- Placing a ride that would remove scenery without the funds to remove that scenery results in the scenery being imbedded in the ride.
- Custom Stalls attributes resetting, and stalls not holding their sync'ed values.
- Some entrances can be placed over existing paths while others cannot. Should be all or none. (All is preferred)
- No scroll bar in the objectives window, leaving objectives not visible in some cases.
- VIPeeps not showing up in Challenges after Apprentice level is reached.
- Photospot/Peep AI interaction bug where peeps are getting stuck in Enclosures and walking through the air to reach them.
- Medium and Small Apple Trees are mislabled or simply the wrong sizes.
- Water Transport Speeds not changing properly for all rides. Should be consistant and uniform when altering speeds.
- Stormrunner Launch Sections lose accelleration when track is complete. Should be the same as it is when incomplete.
- Water Coaster will splash even when moving slowly.
- All Flume Type rides are missing the frontal spalsh characteristic of those rides and are only splashing on the side.
- Splash Track for Wooden Roller Coaster is missing splash particle.
- Original Scenarios give $0 for rewards with Wild! installed.
- Picture for Coasterball shows three cars in picture, but only one car per train is allowed.
- On the Giant Flume, a lift speed of 8.5 or less fails to get the boat over the top of the lift hill.
- A coaster train going backwards through a station in Continuous Circuit Mode will rocket out the other side at an unmanageable 700+ mph.

Suggestions
- Be able to use boosters (not block brakes) on more track types, like a straight booster on the Extended Coaster
- Raise the limit of Challenges in Scenario Edior or remove the limit completely.
- Reintroduce the inventing of of show elements queable in Scenario Editor.
- In Scenarios with Unlimited Money, allow for research priorities to still be set.
- Split the Research Tree into further categories to allow option for researching of different types of scenery.
- Show the item currently being researched and when it will become available.
- Allow option to color the Terrain Blocks seperately from the terrain below it.
- Have option to turn off ride aging, or completely remove ride aging in Sandbox and Scenarios that have unlimited funding.
- Enable ability to change the color of the Splash Boats themselves.
- Improve auto-placement of ride supports, and provide option of turning off supports per ride

I dont think anyone would want to buy a RCT4, fearing that we might just get this again. i would fix what we have foirst, THEN move on :). Besides, arent they working on Thrillville? A RCT4 would just interfere.

Oh, and no, it would not be easier :D

Nope, I wouldn't think so. Aside from Railroad Crossings and maybe one or two other tiny things, this list does not have any content included with it. What is here are bug fixes, tweaks, GUI suggestions, AI issues, etc. I purposely kept all but the most critical content out of this list for that very reason, so it wouldn't be a whole other game.

Even if all these things were taken care of, it wouldn't even be worth an expansion pack, I don't think. These were identified as simplistic items that would be very "patch-worthy."

I hope that clears things up.:)

Thanks Lightwarrior on the rides.

You are correct that the Eyerly Loop-O-Plane 1961 Model is out of sequence for start up and wind down sequence from the original ride. You are also correct in the ride's rotational speed being in accurate. One enhancement I could see would be for the operator of the ride to be able to set one of several speed and startup and wind down adjustment settings in the ride's control panel.

Likewise the Eyerly Roll-O-Plane while in horizontal mode is excellent. But most carnies that have these usually run them vertically only without the pivot mode. in fact horizontal running is actually very rare indeed as Eyerly had a defect in the pivot pin or hinge for the ride. That's mainly why on their greensheets they recommended vertical operations only. So a vertical animation sequence along with the horizontal sequence might be a neat option.

The Merry-Go-Round. Okay, this should also be on the list. As you zoom in, it not only shrinks in size but also spins much faster, about as fast as a Himalaya in speed, yet when you zoom out, it appears at a much more normal rotational speed. Again maybe a speed control added to the control panel might fix that ride issue.

The Chairlift as both a transportation and scenic ride. This is and remains the most neglected ride. Here is what it needs.
a.) Passenger loading/off loading has a defect.
b.) Sound of motor travels with car, should stay at each station end.
c.) Car Issue. Most amusement park chairlifts actually for insurance reasons typically use an enclosed squared gondola, usually about 3 adults. Other cars include a Bubble shaped car (very rare), a circular bucket gondola. Adding these and fixing the chairlift load problems and sound would upgrade and fix an existing ride that remains the most neglected.

I believe that fixes on these would go a long way to more accuracy and playability for these rides.

There are other rides needed but that is a different topic for a new want section when admins get around to it. Well great we can dialogue with the dev now. Maybe we can all make this a better product for everyone.

few things i've noticed:

when saving a track design with a custom billboard in the selected scenery field, the billboard loads in another place ? also cue line and exit path dont save with selected scenery

angled pieces (walls/footpaths/etc) would be nice addition somehow

and when i import a rct1 or 2 track file the rct3 description is taller ?? example 62 ft in rct2 track file showed up as 97 feet in rct3 ?...but the coaster speed seemed the same?

i'm not sure if this is the right place for these, but i didnt see them on list and my eyes went wonky:eek: tryin 2 take it all in

Also, just make peeps die. When they fly off coasters, they float in mid air. Or at least just fix the bug :p

Why?

It's a roller coaster game if you want peeps to die go buy a shoot em up game, there was no reason for that post..

Light thanks for being that list over here..

Light thanks for being that list over here..

It better than having them walking around in mid air 9Which gets anoying after there are several of them)
Even if peeps dont die, at least stop them from floating.
So yes, there was a reason to that post.

I'll be looking forward to what happens with this thread on these forums. Oh, LWK, might want to remove Ken Allen's name from that letter. He reported David's post on Atari as advertising. It sure got me here faster LOL

Sorry Tboy i thought you just wanted them to die, so yes i do agree :D

How would RCT4 be better when RCT3 has so much?

Maybe its just me. But it seems that there are tons of things from improvements to full blown base mods like true 3d that could be added. Consider that there are thousands of Flatride variations including historical rides. Many scenery items that would be "official" to the platform being as Frontier could continue making the expansion and theme add-ons.

On top of that RCT4 released this early might become a marketing risk of sorts. The community I believe as a whole would much prefer that their investment in RCT3 and its expansions continue for a while longer. At least that remains my own point of view. People have invested some good money in the gam,e already if you include the upgrades many had to make to their machines to play the game.

I suppose down the road that RCT4 would be sweet though. But first the list getting updated with addons and fixes I think will happen in the near future ;)

I agree that the bugs should be fixed first, in a patch or something. Then they should release some more expansions e.g. a snow themed one, with hotels/resorts.

As many probably guess, this is a tricky one to answer, but one dimension is the recent reduction in support from Atari many have reported. The support we are offering here from Frontier is 'off our own bat' - as personally I think it is a real shame to leave people out in the cold. Many of the key people from Atari (eg Ken) have sadly left, which may be part of the reason for the change.

Many have noticed that Wild Update #3 is not available via 'Check for Updates' - or indeed from Atari at all, as yet. You can draw your own conclusions - but the amount we do at Frontier will have to bear in mind the amount of support Atari can put in to the game; having said that - we do intend to continue supporting it where we can.

I hope that helps!

David,

Thank you for taking the time to answer, as you well know we all in the end want the same thing.

Hope you find the time and the resource's (sp) to fix any ongoing issues..

Well, at least someone is jumping out ahead of the crowd to help us poor RCTers

By the looks of things, Atari might be purchased by another company soon so who knows what will happen to the RCT3 franchise on their end...

What I really want to see is the stats for rides fixed, along with crack like addiction to sun cream. David B will you keep us updated on this forum or over at Atari?

No, i just put that as a quick solution :D. When i think about it now, i suppose I shouldn't have :D
