Guide / Tutorial Patriarch's Guide to Piracy

Collector Limpets seem terrible....they're not very fast or have a lot of range, and if you're not standing perfectly still they will fail to deposit cargo into your hold. Any tips on using them effectively?

Take them off. :p

I only use the Cobra, so I sacrifice the collectors for 4t of extra cargo. You can't scoop and use collectors, and scooping is faster than a single collector.

In the past your excellent tool, thread has been added to EDCodex. Before EDCodex was released on the 17th of August you have received in the period 5th - 10th of August a PM with an invitation and a special link. After registering and logging in you would automatically become owner of your entry. According to the admin tool(s) you haven't used the special link (yet). Perhaps you have missed the PM or have been (temporarily) away from ED. Its also possible you choose not to claim your entry. Note: Its also possible to assign another commander editing rights for your entry. In either case please send us a PM. You can find your EDCodex entry here.

Alternative way to get ownership
The special link will cease to function in the (near) future, for security reasons. Should you after that point want to become owner of your entry you can use the "Claim ownership" button. In that case please send biobob or myself a PM with the email addressed you used for registration - for verification. You can also use this procedure if you no longer have the PM.

What is EDCodex:
Its a website with a database of currently approx 215+ tools, threads, websites, videos for ED. Any one can and is encouraged to add entries there. EDCodex is and should be community-driven. EDCodex companion thread. Its equally suited for PC's, tablets and smartphones and has RSS feeds.

With kind regards,
Biobob

Great guide, thanks Patriarch. Very useful discussion too.

So if I could summarize to prove to myself I understand basic pirating...

Once you find a system you like, then this is the intended plan:
1. Find an attractive target, preferably it's Wanted
2. Scan
3. Take down their shields
3. Use hatch-breaker limpets
4. If target is wanted, kill
5. Scoop quickly and leave

I'm sure there tons of variables that alter that basic plan, but I'm guessing 90% of the time it's the same idea.

Have I got it right?

Great guide, and I believe absolutely in line with the spirit and the nature of the game.

one question, how often do CMDRs try and fight their way out?

I have heard that hazardous RES don't spawn any space cops so they could potentially be great places to pirate npc miners.

EDIT: Found this on the wiki:
New RES sites were added in the 1.4 CQC update, known as Hazardous Resource Extraction Sites, these sites operate as if the system government is Anarchy. As crime reporting does not work in these sites, it is common to find plentiful amounts of wanted NPCs of all bounty ranges and ship sizes, with larger ships tending to be in wings with smaller escorts or fellow wanted large ships.

How much can you make per hour pirating, best case scenario?

I ask because I'm tired of doing Robigo runs but they are too lucrative to ignore. Yesterday I made 100 million on 2 or 3 runs, I don't remember. I fill up my cargo hold of about 80 with the Shadow Deliveries missions that fail on scan, so it's like 2T of slaves for 2 million, some of the 4 million ones are up to 16 slaves. I stack them till I have my hold full, which is usually more than 10 deliveries.

Yes you fail them all if you get scanned once, but if you are good and lucky as I was yesterday, it's an unmatched payday.

Bounty hunting in Haz Res I can make a few million per hour. Just based on what I saw for cargo prices when I tried trading it didn't seem like you could get close to either of these with piracy, which is a shame because I'd like to give it a whirl.

Do any of you pirates say differently?

How much do you most skilled pirates make an hour?

after some, research i will answer my own question. piracy does not pay anywhere near what all the other activities pay. smuggling, slaveruns, bounty hunting, combat zones and trading all pay significantly more. by a lot. piracy is just there if you want to role play it with people or npcs. you have to enjoy it for its own sake and then go make money some other way

Does someone do the "liberate" missions?

You need to interdict several times the same person which spawn randomly around the same area. This has no sense at all.

Its too much work and trouble compared to other missions considering you get a bounty on you.

hey !

i started my pirate career this night :D. my 2 first prey , a T6 then a T7. being unable to disable their powerplant without breaking the freighter appart, i decided to wake up my little puppies, hatchbreaker 3A and collector 3B as soon as the shield was down . luckly they didnt have any point defense. my wepaons werent the problem , but my pilot skill.

it did the job ! i get back 38T of goods. not the good one ;) . i then decided to proceed differently :

i choose this time , not an anarchy system , but a largely populate refinery 's one . i then went to the nav beacon , and started to scan freighter.
i spotted a T9 , filled with 350T of palladium xD . sadly , i have bounties on my head. and some civilian started to harasse me while i was following him, patiently waiting for his high wake . i well tried to circle from a medium distance at high speed , keeping the big one locked on my radar, (these damn civilian scratch my paintjob ), but the freighter took too much time to jump, and other gang came to got me . i was forced to stop my hunt here.

but it's only a matter of time , before i grab my first ranks >8-]
the next step i suppose, is , intercepting the freighter again and again, until we arrive in a low security or lawless system . then , trigger the trap.

mouahahahhaha , see ya in space guys ;)

I'm thinking of getting into a bit of piracy. Probably mainly NPC as I just don't seem to see that many CMDR's out and about (might be something to do with location - I'm in Australia)

I'll give some of this a go. But probably use my current Viper MK IV. very similar setup to Cob MK III but a lot tougher.

If there are any Aussie pirates out there who don't mind helping someone 'learn the trade' so to speak hit me up. Nomad Dragon in game CMDR name :)

Hi, sorry for dredging this post up, but it was a good read on the subject. I'm eagerly awaiting the PS4 launch of Elite Dangerous (I've played the original Elite on the BBC Micro and Frontier on the Amiga; old man here) and wondering about the eternal question of Solo or PvP. I've read quite a bit on this forum, obviously I have no experience whatsoever, but from what I can see there seems to be something missing from the debate. Namely the result of not complying with a pirate's wishes. Yes, you can say as a pirate that not complying with your demands must result in consequences for the player. But you must also realise that the consequence of YOUR actions may result in a player simply switching to playing in solo; this is counter to your environment as a pirate.

The way I look at it, and yes I have zero experience in the game, is that the most likely mark for a pirate is a trader. Anyone skilled in combat such as a bounty hunter will likely not have much (if any cargo) and prove a more difficult opponent. Anyone playing as an explorer will again not likely have much cargo and will probably have a slim to none chance of even appearing to a pirate depending on where they are exploring. So that leaves traders, of course. How much exactly will a trader benefit from PvP? Is there more profit to be had? Because if not then to me trading in Solo seems a much safer and more enjoyable option. Yes, you will get a few players who seek the thrill of being pirated but if that ends badly then I am sure the thrill will wear thin; traders want to make money surely.

So the point I am trying to make here is that unlike in real life, where traders had no option BUT to sail the seven seas in search of profit and pirates were an unavoidable risk, this is not the case in ED and they can choose to sail in relative safety if they want. I really hope that people pirating on PS4 consider this before too many people trudge off disgruntled into Solo never to venture into PvP again. Which would be a shame. I don't hold out much hope though; most people I have seen on here who have already played on PC/XBox talk about 'getting their hands on the new PS4' players with glee. I would be interested in hearing anyone's comments. Just to reinstate my position, I think pirates are an essential part of ED, but cannot be seen as exactly akin to real pirates. Remember ED is just a game that people play for fun and what you may consider fun may not be seen the same way by the person who was the object of your fun!
