PC Gamer Article "The Best Space Games on PC" - ED Makes An Appearance

Personal, I'd say it's the best space video game ever made and has the potential of being the best space video game of all time, or at least in my gaming carrier (as it were), if it is continually enhanced and updated along the lines as described by the devs and David Braben in early production.

That being said, I don't think it is without its own compromises, issues, and areas that could use further enhancement and improvement.

I also enjoy Space Engineers as a sort of Minecraft in space kind of game.

I wouldn't really call SpaceEngine a game so much as a space simulator, basically an updated version of something like Celestia.

I also have the first two Mass Effects and plan on getting the third if I can find it on Steam sometime for a reasonable price. For that though, it feels more like an action/adventure type RPG where space just happens to be the backdrop. Still, there was some exploration in it which I enjoyed.

The Best Space Games on PC

Other than Elite:Dangerous, I can heartily recommend Space Engineers, Stellaris and FTL. What's your favourite form the list?
That's a good list of space games. Rep++ for sharing. Thanks!

Years ago, I really enjoyed Wing Commander and another which should have made the list (but didn't): Descent.

I play Stellaris once in a while, when i want to loose track of 5 hours very quickly (heh heh).

I have nothing but Love and Great Memories of the years I spent playing Eve. You have to give props to a company that encourages scamming, thieving and skulduggery in their MMO. Despite them all being a bunch of [Censored] [censoreds] [haha] , it is a great community of players.

I enjoyed Tachyon: The Fringe from back around the early 2000s. Picked it back up on Steam and got it working again not all that long ago, as a matter of fact. I really liked the "flight" mechanics in it and the narrator/protagonist is a bit of a hoot.

Homeworld (the original and the remastered)

Sins of a solar empire.( there is a very very good Star Trek mod for this)

Wing Commander: Privateer

Starwars Tie fighter.

ED.

Surprised Freelancer is not on the list, I also enjoyed Alien isolation, and played ME2 through more than twice....[smile]

edit: No Jumpgate on the list still one of my all time favourite games let alone space games, shame it all went belly up when they went to do the reboot.

x3 should definitely be on that list.

At first i thought it was rather meh but as soon as i understood what was going on and how things worked i was hooked like never before. You don't realise it's depth until you play it.

It's a masterpiece IMO.

Agreed. I actually RAN through Freelancer when I played it. Great story-line. It was like one of those books you just can't put down because you just can't wait to see what was going to happen next.

Of all the games that were made into movies, I'm surprised this one didn't make it. All they had to do was simply copy the story-line.

BTW, also noticed The Dig was in there as well. Interesting story: This was supposed to be an episode of Steven Spielberg's "Amazing Stories" TV series. Then someone told him how much all these special effects would cost for a one-hour show. He declined it but sold the idea to his buddy, George Lucas, and there it was.

And if anyone wants the movie of it....

And even if you don't have time to watch all of it, here's a re-make of the first 6 minute intro:

Homeworld is brilliant. It was after finishing the Homeworld Remastered series that I started hunting around for another good space game and stumbled upon ED and never looked back.

So many titles in there leave me scratching my head.

Apart from the obscure titles I've never heard of like Event[0] and Dusk, what exactly does Mass effect have to do in this list? It's only vaguely spacey related, the core of the gameplay is planetbound. And how can they mention the watered down Empire at war without listing Star Wars Rebellion? What exactly makes EVE Valkyrie, a shallow arcade shooter whose only selling point is VR, worthy of a mention amongst the "best space games" ? No Man's Sky? Really? I'm not a hater of the devs as I skipped all the drama and just bought a game I enjoy after watching videos of it, but surely it still has a ways to go. And... Stellaris? Anybody who's bought a strategy/GS game developped by Paradox in the last ten years knows their MO: release a shallow mess and incrementally improve it over the span of several years until it reaches critical mass and turns into a black hole sucking in all your free time. Stellaris is just over one year old, by PI standards it means it's still a mess and it's still shallow. There still are better modern 4x that are just as accessible, like Endless Space and Star Ruler 2.

It's not like they were afraid of adding old titles, they gave Privateer and TIE fighter the thumbs up, so one has to wonder where the hell are Freespace 2, I-war, Freelancer, Nexus the Jupiter Incident? Nothing has dethroned them yet in the space themed game category, so making a list called "the best space games on PC", with no further qualifiers, and omitting them is certainly weird.

I guess TL;DR is, PC gamer is still utter tosh. Well, at least they got KSP right.

From my limited play list
Tie fighter :delux edition(with all the missions)... many hours of fun in that game "Die rebel scum!"

Alien : Isolation... hmm a space game? well it was on a space station.. but it more a scary survival horror game "Yay got all the stuff to unlock the door.. now just to put it together before I get eaten... eeeeeeeeeeeekkkk"

Kerbal space program: only use : training up the next batch of NASA/SpaceX employees :D And making the recovery from a near fatal heart condition barable [smile]

As for the others, I've not played them so I cant comment*

Bill

*Including ED :p

FTL is great but for me, on that list tie fighter (and the xwing games) as well as Privateer 1+2 were superb titles.

Alien isolation is superb, but, i do not think it needs to be on the list......its not a space game in the sense that FTL, ED etc are space games.

(otherwise if it is then DOOM and dead space must be worth mention)

Homeworld remastered is terrible, it's re-skinned homeworld 2 which had a new "improved" control system. Looks shiny terrible game.

You are much better off with the original, which definitely should be on the list.
