PC Gamer review rates Elite very high

Why is it so important for you that ED is rated high? Do you feel bad if you're playing a game that is not loved by every critic? Do you gain self esteem by playing games others find good?

The game gets good scores from the critics.

People buy the game on the back of the reviews.

Frontier Developments plough extra money into their Golden Goose.

We get extra goodies to play in the game.

Everyone is happy. The critics are happy. Frontier Developments are happy. We are happy.

Well... all except Morticielle... will probably never be happy.

Apparently not everyone is happy ;)

But I am happy

I've only played a few hours and I'm now "Average". I am happy and will soon get into combat and all that politics once it's more understood. Just keep new comers away from this site. There's way too much speculation as is all forums. Hopefully the mods will start working in the new year to answer our questions.
HAPPY!

We are all happy you are HAPPY MACMAN!

We need to put the internal security forces on them. Nothing will ever pass on their watch. :p

Yeah... the "Forum Defence Force" or whatever "they" call it

For a game that's only been in full-time development for 2 years I think Frontier have done a t. They deserve all the praise they get.

I've said this many times before. They have achieved a technical feat especially regarding p2p instancing ( so no sub is needed by taking the load off the server) and procedural generation. The combat is also well thought through and engaging.

Well I don't often read PCG reviews but I think this is a fair look at what ED is right now.

Really, despite all the shortcomings (perhaps seen more from our own expectations as early followers on this one) there really isn't anything else created in the last 12 mths that comes close to what ED has accomplished (although Alien Isolation was a real standout in what it accomplished). Maybe light on gameplay features right now, but boy its still loads of fun!

Games feel very disposable these days, lacking replayability .. ED I think will buck this trend and be with us for a long time.

Wow, that review was really well written. I read it just minutes after finishing a game session, and it made me want to go back and play. I'm really glad that the reviews are good. If FD can make some money, we can all enjoy watching this very nice game become an epic over the coming months and years as development continues.

Wish it didn't refer to the online requirement as DRM. It is not for licensing as much as it is for the games infrastructure. Oh well, im not going to let something bother me just because it might bother somebody else. Good review, with a strong understanding of the games foundation. PC gamer seems to recognize a good launch platform that is capable of building on content for the future.

I think these scores in the 80s are pretty good. It feels like a mid 80s game to me. The thing about this game is, the core parts that are "complete" - graphics, sound, modeling of space flight, docking - are so fabulously executed that they tend to smooth over some of the deficiencies. Sure, I kept getting "unable to connect" when trying to text my friend today, but then voice comms worked, and we flew together and traded cargo and it was just so slick we completely forgot about the texting problems.

if FD can smooth out some of these problems and add features that we expect in 2014, then I agree with PCG that this is a game that is already excellent with the potential to be a classic.

This just goes to show that all the worrying and hand wringing done by those here who were afraid the game was going to get bad reviews was for nothing.

This game is still in it's infancy. This game is going to make money. This game is going to keep improving.

This game is going to be another 'classic' for FD

All good news for us! :)

I have to admit I'm actually a bit worried about how well they'll be able to fund ongoing dev with up-front sales. A game has to sell fairly well to pay back a two-year dev cycle, so you need sales on top of those to keep going. With the expansion packs etc hopefully they can juggle it all, but it would seem more secure if they also had an ongoing revenue stream. As a consumer I definitely appreciate being able to buy it with one up-front purchase, but as a fan, I'd like it if there was an optional subscription that added some kind of value to those that wanted it, and netted ongoing revenue to secure ongoing dev. The game industry is brutally unstable.

Ah well. Hopefully they'll be doing fine!

86?! Clearly PC Gamer must be wrong.

I did an Honest Review of Elite: Dangerous on my YouTube channel and I also gave it an 86 out of 100. I got lots of negative comments about how no honest review would ever give this game an 86 of 100.

So, I say again, clearly we must be wrong. =p
