For some people, open play is meant for cooperation, not competition. Is that not also a valid point of view?
Piracy is not competition. It's also not "PvP" in the traditional "duel" sense. It is, by its very design, someone trying to force another player into abandoning (parts of) his cargo -- but this is not "griefing" either, it is part and parcel of Elite : Dangerous. The sheer size of the galaxy, combined with the protection provided by stations (and the option to go "Solo" for the time it takes to get to some other trade route) makes it next to impossible to "serial pirate" a trader.
Actually, unless your group has
explicitly agreed to not do player-on-player piracy (which, sorry Moebius, I think is a grave mistake potentially unbalancing the game), you have absolutely no point to complain if this should happen in "group" play either,
because it is part of the game.
Yes, a well-armed pirate attacking a Type 9 is not "fair" in the sense of "even ground". It's not intended to be. The balancing factor are the relative scarcity of pirates versus the insane profits the Type does reap with each run.
And yes, there is very good reason to attack
player traders instead of NPCs. NPCs often carry low-value goods, like clothing, grain, HE suits, the like. Players pretty much
always carry high-value goods, like precious metals, slaves, tobacco etc., or even rare commodities.
So please make a very clear distinction: A player pirate
Commander certainly is a "bad guy" from the point of view of
your Commander.
But the
player at his computer is neither a "bad guy", nor a "griefer". He's playing the game, just the same as you are, and he doesn't need your consent any more than you need his. You are there, so it's OK to attack you,
for whatever reason.
