Performance impact of Ram & CPU upgrades

https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1029959/

One long and three short beeps in the ASUS beep code table is No VGA (graphics card) detected. (I know you said four long beeps, but you said you think they're four long beeps.)

Try the RAM individually.
Replace the CMOS battery (it's a very cheap battery the size of a pound coin or so, but thinner).
Check your motherboard risers are properly fitted and that the mobo is clear at the back.
Check the CPU power cables are properly attached.
Try it with the GPU installed.

The CPU mounting bracket will, if the CPU is installed correctly, prevent the pins from being crushed - the PCB that the chip is embedded into will take the pressure, not the CPU itself.

Thank you!
I will go through each. A couple of these jump right out at me (like video), but others are new, like replacing the battery - which I guess since I upgrade at least one every three years I have not needed to do previously. But then again one interpretation of the beeps is battery.....hmmmmm.

Thanks!

Scott

It sounds to me like the No VGA problem. Unless I'm missing something RYZEN 2600 has no onboard graphics so with no GPU plugged in there is no VGA to detect. The Video outputs on the board will be for if you are using an AMD chip with integrated graphics, which you aren't. I think you just need to install your GTX.

That has got to be it. I have now read this, "Only 2 Ryzen CPUs have inbuilt graphics and those are the 2200g and 2400g. ". And that the target market for Ryzen is a market that almost always has discrete GPUs - which is so true.

I got lazy with my build, or its just been too long and I am not used to my motherboard screaming at me on boot :). I used to always start with video in on first POST test, but then would often have to back it out, so now I just start with onboard - which to date (decade +) has been the way to go.

I will not be able to test with GPU until tonight, but this has got to be it. Great tips also 100thMonkey, i will continue with those if its not video.

Thanks!

I normally do the same things and use onboard to check the things runs then drop in the GPU. That's been fine for this one and my last one as they are Intel with the in built graphics. RYZEN not having it stuck in my mind when I started seeing reviews because they are totally right. Who on earth would buy say an i7 and not get a dedicated GPU... it's just silly. I reckon it makes more sense doing what AMD has done with RYZEN and shaving off a bit of cost by taking something pretty pointless out!

Fingers crossed you get it up running and enjoy!

It was the video, up and running now! Thanks!

But wait, theres more! Bluescreen now and constant USB drops of the Oculus Camera. I just remembered why I tired of hardware :). I was previously running an old MB/CPU someone gave me at work, that failed all Oculus hardware tests, including USB - yet it was completely stable and I could get adequate DK2 ED play. Now I am brand new ALL and getting constant USB camera drops and bluescreens *joy*.
Dedicated PCI USB card on the way.

Battling my way back to the black :)

Thanks

Scott

Wait. Did you replace all the hardware, and run the same windows install that was previously set up for old hardware?

That is asking for trouble.

I would do a refresh of that install.. You probably have a heap-ton of old drivers etc.

Thanks Dipso. But no, I didn't keep the same install. I replaced the CPU/MB/RAM, same HD, same case. I previously had win7 and reformatted my SSD, and installed WIN10.
Again, Oculus USB camera drops every 8 minutes or so, and two blue screens over around 4 hours - related to the NTKernel (seems pretty generic).
The only BIOS change I made was to memory. It was set to AUTO and was only showing 2166 - so I manually set it to 28XX (I don't remember) as my RAMM is 3000. I have set the RAMM back to auto. Latest GTX970 drivers from Nvidia.

As an extra bonus my machine locked and then I hardbooted, got those 4 beeps again (previously related to no video) and had to hardboot a couple of times before my machine came up again (wth) :)

I am sure this is a BIOS/WIN10 config issue somewhere along the line - the adventure continues! :).

Again, for an upgrade what I did was still pretty budget oriented (spending 15K on home improvements *sigh* there goes the ultimate VR rig / a team of VR rigs!), but did check the ASUS site and the memory below is supported on this board.

Thanks

Maybe run a check on the ram sticks, just to check if they could be faulty?
This sounds like some kind of hardware issue to be honest.
Fautly motherboard?
Something wrong in mounting/ socketing of stuff?
Is the PSU giving enough power to everything?

I know it sounds like a huge hassle, but pulling it apart and checking everything is put in right could be worth a shot at this point.
- I see that was already looked at.

Have you made sure you have updated USB and chipset drivers for your motherboard?

No! Darn it, hadn't thought of that. I must be getting rusty, will check for updated chipset drivers tonight. And when it comes to PSU - I don't know, I get a little thin knowledge wise here. I have a 700 WATT unit....I don't know how to troubleshoot it. I have a multimeter...… It was rock solid for three years on my previous build, but that might not have been as power hungry.

In the past (when I had stuff just laying around) I would swap things out. In this case I don't have anything else. Likely since I was unhappy with the Micro version of the motherboard I might buy or return it and buy the full board, then drop in the other memory. Come to think of it first I will just drop in my other 8 GIG stick, as I have 16 but have only been using 8. So will swap the memory stick tonight.

I also have a USB card on the way as its clear I need one either way. I will have three Oculus detectors around the room when I upgrade to the CV1. It will be nice to get into more open room VR on other games - better chance my son can break something that way :).

Thanks!

https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator is a good place to start to see if your psu is powerfull enough (to be honest it should be 700w should be enough if you aren't running any crazy build)

PSUs can ble tricky though, some get sloppy after a few years, so it might still work but have a lower output. (the calculator should have some headroom factored in though)

Keep at it, let us know what you find out. :)

Are you only getting the bluescreens with the oculus hooked up? Try to run with as few things as possible connected to the computer and see if its more stable.

I have updated ALL MB drivers, including the BIOS. (The chipset drivers seemed to mostly be about updates for Radeon).
I consistently get Oculus camera drops, every 2 to 6 minutes. You can hear the USB drop sound, then it reconnects.
This was 'resolved' by moving the Oculus camera to a USB 2.0. It was failing on USB 3.0 (3.1?). When I swapped it with the keyboard - it no longer dropped....(I would have expected the opposite).
I also get 4 long beeps on every reboot.
However PCMARK and 3DMARK show my machine is running as it should based on its hardware. The hardware monitor does not show high temperatures or any other errors - the machine seems stable once it is up, but it will lock on boot sometimes - but otherwise no more bluescreens.
Although I normally shut off SLEEP mode, it was on with WIN10 so it gave me a clue. Coming out of sleep I got 4 long beeps, and in the lower right hand part of the screen is said disconnect Oculus (I could not fully read it) and then immediately - reconnect Oculus, so this seems related to the Camera.

Keep in mind this is a DK2, as I am not going to order CV1 until I have a stable platform. I realize that the Dk2 may not run on WIN10 or may have some problems, and this is certainly true with a lot of the legacy DK2 demos that no longer run - however the 4 long beeps is occurring during boot before WIN10 is involved....

*Joy* ! :)

Thanks

For those of you losing sleep wondering how my little PC drama turned out (and those that just love to seeing this thread coming to the top again :) ).
I ordered a new motherboard and used my 2nd stick of RAMM (which I previously had not put in) , and imagine that, no problems at all.
It was clearly the motherboard or my stick of ramm. This weekend I will put the RAMM back in and see what happens, but I am guessing it was the MB.
I replaced it with one I wanted any ways, that allows me to put USB and audio to the front panel.
MSI X470GPLUS Performance Gaming
And has that fancy light system that shows my CPU heating up.

And some good came of this. As I spent a week off and on trying to get this figured out I bumped into some technies and one had a GTX 1080TI that I got for $425!!!!
I have been benchmarking it hard for two days and it is rock solid.

The DK2 is FINALLY looking old, time to upgrade that last part.

Now to just find the time to actually play ! :)

Thanks

Scott

Excellent, good to hear you are up and running.

Btw if you only have one stick of RAM in you will be running it at half speed. You need two sticks for the DDR (double data rate) to work as the two sticks work in tandem (they should also be identical specs).

Anyways, enjoy!
