Performance worse since Update 5? Try disabling VSync

Posted this to the update thread but it's helped at least one other CMDR so I thought I'd drop it here for better visibility.

I've just been messing around with some in-game graphics settings to see if I could induce the terrible framerates others have reported. I'm lucky with my setup; I get a stable 80-90 FPS in every area of a station, but since Update 5 the one setting that will induce horrible frame hitching absolutely without fail is enabling VSync via the in-game display settings. With VSync on and a 60Hz refresh rate, my stable 80-90 FPS drops to 60 in the main area of the concourse as you'd expect, but as soon as I wander into a store or near an elevator of some kind the in-game FPS counter shows around 50 but the on-screen FPS is definitely more like single digits.

It's odd, because with VSync off I get a higher framerate in the stores than in the main concourse. YMMV, but I think I'll be keeping VSync off for now.

I don't know man. I don't believe this will really do much. There's multiple threads on magic bullet fixes. Some work. Some don't. Everyone has a different build and honestly, it's gotten to the point where there really isn't anything we can do until Frontier fixes their side of things. Too much burden is being placed on the players to play around with their settings in a game that is clearly horribly optimized. Frontier has managed to do the unthinkable and perfectly program chaos.

Oh I totally agree, but if I can help one person to be able to enjoy Odyssey between now and the next patch it was worth the time it took to mess around with the graphics settings and type this out. I can tell you that if I had to play with the choppy framerates I got with VSync on, I'd be spending my weekend doing something else.

Edit:

At least disabling VSync is a tonne easier for someone to toggle and test than some other ways to increase framerate.

You're right. I did not mean to take away from your advice and if it does help someone, that's good enough. My pessimism with this developer just keeps reaching new lows.

I know it improves fps if your GPU is near 100% and fps under 60 (with vsync on)
But i can't accept the tearing with vsync off.

What the hz speed on your monitor
Vsync will lock it to match your monitor. If you monitor is 60hz then it will lock it to 60fps. Thats whats its meant to do

By doing this frames are consistent and it prevents the tearing effect.

And your GPU doesn't waist performance chewing frames you cannot see.

If gpu running at 90fps and your monitor is 60hz, you will only see 60fps in realty.

30 waste frames gpu getting hammered with no gain

Just got to ring to mine tritium -> 15 fps :D (down from 60 limited).
Gona restart, maybe that's because i was on planets before.

Upd: after full game reload -> 60 fps inside ring back.

So ...I guess "game is not closing, black screen", "fps drop", "f10 fps drop" and everything else has the same roots - some calculation never ends there and drains resource.

I agree that's how VSync is supposed to work, but that's not what I'm seeing. With VSync off, performance is fine everywhere, with faster FPS in stores and near elevators presumably due to the lack of reflections and/or culling; with VSync on I get framerates at the refresh rate in the main concourse as expected, but it degrades to single-digit real-world framerates in stores or near elevators.
