Personal revenge, player bounties.

Hi guys,
someone said here on the forums: "If you have a grudge with someone, settle it yourself".

Now listen to some of my thoughts and I look forward to what do you think about them:

1) There used to be players with large bounties, it was fun, now with expiring bounties, there are like 100k bounty on commander only. It is a pity, bounty hunting makes sense only against NPCs

2) Maybe we can get an option to put bounty on others manually from our own money?

3) Can we think of a way to track one specific commander? At least get an approximate location (or maybe a few hours old location)? There is too much anonymity there! I can be very, very bad person and no-one has any opportunity to find me later and show me that I should behave:)

One little shameless bump because I deserve at least one "no, you are utterly stupid" comment instead of complete oblivion:)

I agree mostly, with one exception - this player set bounties could easily be exploited to bully a player - don't like someone? Put a huge bounty on them.
It should only be possible if your ship was destroyed by the player you're setting a bounty on.

Yes, that could work, but the ability to locate someone (even when it is just approximate) would be very nice I think - even crucial.

IIRC player bounties might be coming in an update down the road, but I forsee potential for exploiting it for "easy farming" or griefing, but personally I look forward to the idea.

Revenge is a dish best served by yourself. If you have a grudge settle it yourself. That seems the best way to handle it to me.

I believe that this has been done before. There used to be a website for such things. I play in a private group so have no need of it. This is why I don't know the URL to the site. :)

Pretty sure GalNet News on Radio Sidewinder even reported on it.

Revenge in this game is utterly pointless, because there's nothing you can do that has any permanent consequence for the other player.

That said, I don't think the OP was talking about wanting revenge on someone -- I think he's lamenting the fact that it's hard to be a "real" bounty hunter in this game without notorious scumbags that have a huge price on their head. Or maybe vice-versa, that it's hard to be a notorious scumbag if you can't rack up enough of a bounty that people are always after you.

Unfortunately, either way, that's probably never going to happen. FD had to cap player bounties at 1 million credits, because people used to exploit by racking up insane bounties and then hopping into a sidewinder and letting their friend kill them for fast easy money. (Yet another example of one of life's sure things -- you can always count on a few idiots to ruin the fun for everyone else.)

Players may need a reason to become "wanted", being evil doesn't seem very profitable. I myself will do it once i've made my riches and can afford the losses.

EVE fixed that friend-bounty problem years ago. Like most of Elite's problems actually, they are re-inventing the wheel but starting with a square.

If the bounty came out of the killed cmdrs own credits, instead of the magical money bank - that might eliminate exploitation to some degree.

And be a rather stiff penalty, as well.

Guys, you all focus on the bounties, but all bounties are pointless when there is absolutely NO way to find anyone you want. When I get griefed, I am absolutely unable to find the griefer again or even see him again in my whole life. That is a primary problem and then we can balance bounties:)

HOW? How do you want to find anyone to serve your dish? The galaxy is huge and you are unable to find anyone there.

I wouldn't want FD to take any queues from Eve. There is nothing there that FD can;t do better.
Start with player interaction, not least the corporation mechanic. Then onto the market, with its fully player-driven economy, buy/sell order system, supply/demand, fluctuating prices, etc. Research and manufacturing (tied into the market/economy). Skills training (not so relevant since ED flight control is direct-input, but could still add modifications). Sheer range of items, modules, possible ship builds. Player-character creation.

This is being generous to ED by only listing things from EVE that would massively improve it. If I was listing features that I'd like to see personally, I'd be holding up the X series as an example of an immersive computer-generated economy; Orbiter as an example of how flight mechanics should be done; First Encounters as the model for planetary landings; Pioneer for sheer quantity of bulletin board contracts; SpaceEngine for how space and space bodies should look and be generated... And then I'd add all the mini-games you could shake a stick at.

Afterthought: throw in EVE's Planetary Interaction system as well - the ability to survey planets and moons, and construct permanent resource-harvesting facilities on the surface. A function a little like the old MB-4 mining machine in FE2, but a little more sophisticated.

"remember that guy that we ganked earlier?"
"yeah, what about em?"
"do you want a free million credits?"

How player created bounties would turn out, basically.

I have heard rumors of this, it would be quite intruiging especially if there where a bounty board that would display players with bounties that where perhaps up to 100LY range from the station with a board

2) Maybe we can get an option to put bounty on others manually from our own money?

Would be highly exploited probably, a rich player helping a friend would jump into a sidewinder put a few million bounty and hey presto you have a easy way to move money over from one player to the other, and in return this could open for a lot of perhaps unwanted business going on such as mr china seeing oppertunities in the buying and selling credits market. Even if limited to say, 100-500k it would be doable in a larger chinaman business, as well as these small amounts for normal players would be useless money on par with the small missions you can get.

This would be nice though, not only for those hunting, but those wanting to avoid. I would likely want to play Open more if I could have a better overview of where the griefers\bandits\angrykids\mean people are so I could try and stear away from them a bit instead of "oh hi there, yep this is my ship.. thanks now I got a large insurance claim..."
