Phrases I never want to read again (but almost certainly will)

Mah, oh mah. Here we have a scrub cryin' salty tears 'coz he can't surive or afford the meta build. Quick, better hide b4 the fanbois arrive and tell him to git gud. Also, get some popcorn b4 the forum pew pew starts.

Fantastic! Can't 'Rep' you enough.

Oh and 'Rep'

Edit: I'm tempted to make this my signature

Unless you want to sound like an absolute .

Agreed.

It has no clear meaning that is even close to what it means outside of gaming. Out there it means self-referencing or 'as viewed from a level above' (meta-fiction; fiction about fiction)

...

It isn't really that unfitting as a term. Meta gaming is more like playing a game as though it's just a game that has a "winning" strategy instead of "immersing" yourself in the game universe as a character, or similar.

I think much of the recent contention comes from "meta gamers" and "immersion gamers" not caring for the other style of play, thinking that it isn't a valid way to play the game.

Uch nah, the issue is people misusing these terms to try and win an argument. When someone does actually use a legit strawman or ad hominem argument I want to be able to call it out without appearing like a ****.

Meta. from the OED:

1. Denoting change, transformation, permutation, or substitution.

2. With sense ‘beyond, above, at a higher level’. a. (a) Prefixed to the name of a subject or discipline to denote another which deals with ulterior issues in the same field, or which raises questions about the nature of the original discipline and its methods, procedures, and assumptions.Cf. earlier

b. Chiefly Logic and Linguistics. Prefixed to various terms to denote something of a second-order or more fundamental kind, esp. a construct, method, classification, etc., which is concerned with the underlying principles of a system, or applies to the whole of a system.

c. Chiefly Computing. Prefixed to technical terms to denote software, data, etc., which operate at a higher level of abstraction.

etc.

(no idea why the font went all weird for definition 1).

Edit: in all seriousness, I can't stand most of those words either. They're immature.

And a +1 from me Cmdr, epic ninja.... Had just decided to respond in a similar vein but there's no way I could equal or better your post !!

It may be very suprising to some but many frequenters of the forums did not hatch from eggs yesterday, and have experience from other games and forums and the lingo you describe is not only not unusual but very common. Many of the terms are used widely in the EVE community (which is about 12 year old now?) but many will predate even that. So my advice is fret not, have a nice shot of whatever tipple floats your boat and let people get on with being people without worrying too much about it.

Cheers! *take shot of Balvenie Doublewood - a stellar whiskey people on these very forums put me on to - thanks for that Whiskey lads!*

Dang! i'm out from home for work and living in an hotel room (with my trusty Alienware 17 and a cheap but functional hotas & trackir ;) ) an i miss having a nice bottle of tequila cazadores añejo...

Yes, so meta gaming is like playing the game from "above" and making strategies and playing accordingly. I think people accused of being min/maxers are more just meta gamers, even though I think there is such a thing as being an "immersion gamer" that is also a min/maxer.

<edit> ok eating massive amounts of crow here:
Abbreviation of Most Effective Tactic Available. Mostly used when comparing tactics in a game,

I feel dumb now.

Thanks for explaining the term.
If people want to use an acronym, they ought to use all caps: META to prevent confusion with the original meaning.
