Today the SteamVR beta 1.10.1 was released and I can confirm (HP Reverb) The issue with asteroids in Elite is gone.
At now its working on any output resolution and no matter of volumentric lightning level. Please test on other SteamVR related headsets.
Beacuse supersampling may cause your output resolution is not from even numbers, even if SteamVR shows that. I also noticed that during playing with SS and output resolution.i noticed this when i had a pimax and it was caused at least for me by setting hmd image quality to anything other than 1.0
I just updated to the most recent steam beta and I still see this problem both in VR (Samsung Odyssey +) and on the monitor. I run volumetrics on medium. I tried Ultra and it is reduced but still there. I saw it in two different res zones as well. The problem is NOT fixed. Im running it on an I 7700 1070 Win10 system. at SS100 on steam and 1.0 on the HMD.
