Pimax 8K VR headset kickstarter ends...

Its a nice review, no fanboy review but an honest review. There are some issues it seems... But, Im keeping my pledge simply because they communicate with the backers and they do seem hellbent on giving us a good product.. So far they have given us pretty straight answers and that counts a lot. Im not too happy about the Hz issue but still, I trust they will deliver in the end. My 1080TI will just have to do for now. Upgrading to Volta when it becomes available.

I have seen another review on the Road to VR website that also points out several short coming during their hands on time with the Pimax 8k prototype. I think that some on this forum probably are being a little over-enthusiastic on the 8k because everyone really wants a next gen headset. I know I do but I'm not willing to back it on kick starter. I'll wait until the production units have some time in the wild first. I have concerns about the refresh rate and brightness myself. Also the fact that they use LCD instead of OLED. LCD has never been good at displaying dark scenes and they can't do true blacks. Since my primary VR game is Elite which is very dark with a lot of black in space, i'm not sure about LCD. I'm hoping the Pimax delivers but I don't think it will live up to the hype. It should at least push other headset makers to deliver on their next gen headsets.

The only time they say 1080ti is when they talk of the pimax 8k x which is another beast again entirely since it will be pushing for native 4k in each display.
And I doubt SLI will be a thing for VR going forwards either.

I probably should opt out, at least all sensible parts of me think so.
But knowing me that would just mean I'd probably end up spending the money soon enough on fanatec gear or something else useless :S

As for my PC:

It's a i7 4790k with 16GB 2400 DDR3 and a 1080ti.
And these are my settings courtesy of ED profiler

Since I can just use current vive base stations, I can get the 'cheap' 8k pack, and if it's great I would regret not having it.
If it's not great I would regret having it.

Maybe I could e-bay it to someone with less standards than mine :\

I agree. I hope the other headset giants take notice that there is real interest in moving forward with next gen hardware.

But from rumblings around Oculus.
Chances are the next cv2 would also be LCD and not Oled, they seem a bit unhappy with Oled for now, wether that is just them getting fed up with Samsungs bull or other technical reasons ?

I think it is a bit of both.

90hz isn't for motion sickness but it does help, if you have that issue.
There is a huge step however in the "VR-MAGIC" feeling going from 75 to 90hz.
It's the difference between "yea this is pretty good" to "wholy sh***t this is amazing".

I just figured out that my Pimax 4k B1 headset is the OLED one capped at 66hz - I get a solid 66FPS in elite 95% of the time with 2.0 Pimax supersample and Elite settings on High/Ultra - It still looks and plays amazing, with maybe a few frame drops into the high 50's on occasion in and around stations, and I am pretty sure that is CPU related, because I see my CPU usage go up to 80/90% in and around stations and drop to 50/60 elsewhere.

For me then, 75Hz is not a dealbreaker, and they also have time to figure it out and improve on it if they are able to ..

yeah same here no big deal for me if not 90HZ. I have the dk2 which is 75hz and also have burrowed once a CV1 and I did not notice the difference between 75 or 90HZ. And to tell you the truth I'm actually happy that it would be running at 75HZ, saving some PC hosepower requirements.
However I also understand that for some people who are more prone to nausea it ccould be a concern.
Pesonally I'm still in!!

Yeah I suppose I can accept 75hz if it is steady for a huge increase in sharpness and SDE if the hype holds.

Brainwarp, not super keen on that but that could just be bias from my eternally burning hatred for 3d tv and 3d blueray.

What I was unable to accept was the lack of positional tracking in the Pimax 4k.
That's not really a concern with the 8k.

I am still optimistic for 90hz though although it is worrying what would take to actually drive that in vr.

I’m just about to get my XboxOne Kinect back from a friend (he can still keep the console to play halo) and have ordered the windows 10 adapter .. i’ll Let you know how it works out with the VR driver that allows full body tracking in SteamVR using it

I’ve already setup the PSMove service with two ps3 eye camera’s and two move controllers and Google EarthVR with those and the increases resolution of the pimax is amazing!!

I did consider waiting until this becomes available in the stores as a friend of mine is doing, but waiting an extra 4 months+ and not getting those kickstarter freebies in the stretch goals, I'm a backer.
I did too, but I decided I couldn't wait those extra months. Originally, I signed up for the 5K, but after all the positive comments online, I upgraded to the 8K. I'm also getting 1 of the lighthouse units, so that I have full positioning (not just rotation). I saw no reason to get the controllers; these days, the only game I play is ED.

Broke and took the plunge for 5k 6h before closing time...8k was no longer available for the kit. The saved 100$ will go towards an MCG grip from VKB.

My greatest concern frankly were the lenses and reviewers almost unanimously praised them. All I need is resolution parity with rift while giving me larger FOV and better comfort. Now I wait for them to market the wireless module with a breakout box so I can drive cables to the living room...

Any more post purchase rationalization? I'll probably think of something.
