PiMax VR Group

Hi,

Just got my Pimax 4K a few days ago, and have been struggling to get it going properly although I now seem to have got the hang of it. But the main problem I've got, that I haven't been able to resolve, is that it won't work with ED.
Given that ED is the main reason I wanted VR and bought the system, it's really annoying.

Now to be clear, the Pimax is working.
I've run a couple of Steam games, and a non-Steam game (IL2 Sturmovik-BoS) successfully. As a noob to VR the IL2 was quite awesome, and can now understand what everyone has been raving about.

However, when I try to run ED (a non steam version) the game starts on the computer screen, but in the HMD I go from the Steam VR room to a dark room looking at something like a TV with 3 white vertical lines flashing at the bottom of the "TV screen", and it just stays like that.
On my monitor the small Steam VR box has "(unresponsive) EliteDangerous64.exe" in red.

I have copied a link to the ED launcher into PiPlay, and in ED graphics set the 3D option to side by side, as well as reducing the normal screen to a smaller window, but no joy.

Anyone got any suggestions, please.

My computer is VR capable with a GTX 980 Ti gfx card if that is of any use.
I did see in this thread that someone got a Steam key from Frontier in order to get it to work, but I really don't want to go down that route.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi there

I think you need the steam version of elite to do this. The pimax uses steamVR and I guess the game needs to launch via steam/steam vr to make elite work with it.

My settings for pimax are pimax/ direct for the pimax. (Not extended)

If steam vr home is working then then the pimax is working.

Hi Loribee,

Thanks for the reply.
I am using the pimax/direct as well. I don't have an "extended" option, just direct or video.
I believe video replaced the extended option in one of the more recent software updates.
I am using version 1.2.97

As for needing a steam version in order to use steam vr I'm not sure that is the case. As I said in my first post I can successfully run a non steam game which uses the steam vr software.
Also I'm sure I've read in this thread as well as elsewhere that although pimax needs the steam vr to run ED, it doesn't actually need to be a steam ED version. At least I hope I've picked that up correctly.

Any other ideas ?
I really really want to experience ED in VR.

hi CobraCommander,

Loribee is right. The Pimax is compatible with Oculus games and Steam games and some non steam games using revive. but for ED as it has been designed to be fully compatible with steamvr, you should really use that for ED. question: did you buy ED from frontier directly? is that why you dont have it in Steam? if that is the case..we had someone on the Pimax Forums with that exact issue.. the thread was here: http://forum.pimaxvr.com/t/pimax-not-working-with-elite-dangerous/1913/4 basically he managed to fix it by uninstalling the game, then getting a steam key from frontier and then installing again.. make sure you backup you commander profile! you dont want to lose that.

also on a side note.. Loribee, the fact you have Pimax and Extended mode means you are using piplay 1.1.92 i suspect.. and older version of the drivers.. the render is using steamvr's one. the later 1.2.x drivers including the one that Cobra is using is using Pimax's own rendered, and had additional giro calibration so the lateral drift is not too bad.

Thanks Eno, I was going off an earlier build of Pimax, with the extended/direct stuff .. I realize it's changed a bit now.. I am still not on the latest version as the version I am currently running, 1.2.89 seems to be great with respect to (lack of) drifting and framerate --maybe you can convince me the newer versions are even better ;)

Hi,

Thanks Loribee and Enopho for your info.
I did a bit of double checking after Loribee's post and started to realise I was probably wrong in thinking non steam ED worked with the Pimax. A lot of people say that ED runs fine with the Pimax but didn't say whether it was the steam version or not. Since other people clearly stated the steam version worked I made the stupid mistake of assuming if steam wasn't mentioned then it MUST be a non steam version

Enopho, my version of ED is from the Frontier store (original Kickstarter backer). I know I can request a steam key, but was really hoping to avoid that if possible.
I don't have a problem with steam (I have an account and probably buy most of my games through it), it's just that being in from the start I want as much money as possible from this game (that I love) to go directly to FDev rather than a percentage being syphoned off to steam.

I suppose, when you think about it, that I would've been in the same situation had I bought a Vive rather than the Pimax.

Thanks again.

Does anyone have any experience in using DrKai's EDProfiler with the PiMax?

Does it solve the HOTAS detection issues?

Is there a HOTAS issue? I am not seeing a problem with my TM/Hotas with the Pimax. I also just added ax Xbox controller to the config for SRV and camera stuff.

I use ED Profiler to switch between VR/Non-VR play sessions.

Hotas not detected when ED was launched from Steam, was reported by some players.

Ahh ok. I think I removed all of the bindings from my bindings directory apart from the my custom hotas one. I'm working just fine. The only thing I've noticed is that if I don't switch on my Xbox controller when I start the game I lose the hotas.

I am playing with a combination of hotas and Xbox controller

Hi there, Just so you know the 8K pimax was at IFA 2017 in Berlin. it is just a prototype and Pimax are making 2 version of an upgraded HMD. both have an astounding 200deg FOV - 1 version is going to be 5K resolution and the other 8K resolution. Pimax have created a new Lens for this and you can real all about it on the pimax forums. http://forum.pimaxvr.com/ it is quite a hot topic. many of the community there have been giving Pimax features to add and have insisted on Pimax getting 'respectable' reviewers to review the product prior to the kickstarter they will be doing in a few weeks. They have contacted Norman from Tested.com and he has agreed to provide and indepth honest review. As Norman is completely independent reviewer, the pimax community on their forums have been posting questions for Norman so he can review the device and its accessories in depth based on what the community actually want... you are free to add your questions/suggestions on pimax forums as well.

But to be clear.. the 8K is not released yet, it will be offered at kickstarter, however a lot of vr enthusiasts including myself are salivating over this HMD specs and those of us that got to IFA to actually test it have posted their reviews on youtube it does actually appear to be the real deal. time will tell as will the anticipated review from tested.com

Also regarding the ED Profiler, im sorry i cant comment on that as i never use it, all my bindings are done in game or via voice attack.

Finally, Pimax have released a new Piplay driver. 2.0.3.3 - new UI, some additional features, but i would advise those of you that use revive or Oculus Home as well as steamvr to NOT install yet as these drivers block some of the device options in Piplay if Oculus runtime or revive is installed. Pimax are aware and are fixing it in a patch coming soon. other than that the new UI is much better, you can launch all of your VR and NON VR Titles including videos, 3d and 2D as well as games straight from the piplay window, the giro now has auto and manual calibration, the IPD settings can go lower than 55 (which was locked in the prev driver versions) the Render slider is still there, and the additional content from the pimax servers now download without stalling.. so when they fix the device settings option buttons when you have oculus and revive this will be the one i go for.

Regards

Eno
