The lions found during historic times in Europe were northern lions. In particular, the difference between those populations, the recently extinct Barbary lions, and Asiatic lions is negligible, not just only the same subspecies, but also with almost no difference whatsoever.
Cave hyenas were a different subspecies of the spotted hyena, but, after all, animals will change their fur growth depending on the climate. It is not an inmutable character, but something regulated hormonally in response to the actual conditions.
