Planet Zoo is not Zoo Tycoon 2, or 3

Regarding modding...I don't know if you guys have seen but people have already started making skins for animals.

While great, that's not really supported modding - they're replacing the texture files for male/female animals. The real question is if they will find a way to add variant skins without replacing the default skins, or to add new animals/plants/scenery to the game.

I see Hendrix is involved in one of those projects (an absolute legend from the ZT2 modding community). If him and his old team start making mods for PZ, it would honestly be the one of best things that could happen for the game. Lets hope Frontier decides to embrace them & the modding community in general. 🤞

To add in the conversation:

I've played Zoo Tycoon 2 for all my childhood. Only vanilla with official expansions, I don't even know there were mods back then. I didn't get a lot of Zoo Tycoon 1 exposure. Literally the zoo genre runs through my veins...

Anyway, I can't really compare PZ with ZT, coz given I don't have the game myself. I'd love to, but pricing and my computer specs say otherwise.

While I would like to hope it'll encourage Frontier to enable mod support, it could just as easily swing the other way. Hendrix (and the people he worked with on ZT2) making mods for PZ would honestly be the one of best thing that could happen for the game. I hope they will not support modding. I rather not see animals with strange colors on the market. Especially since they will revert to the old color after buying it, if you don't have that mod. I don't want a zoo with freaks anyway.

Count me out on the modding part. Unless it's for sandbox only. In that case I'm all for it.

The majority of ZT2 modders focused on either adding animals that were missing from the roster, adding realistic colour variants or making higher resolution skins for the base game; there really wasn't that many rainbow-unicorn type skins floating around. Radical Remake is a good example of what the modders contributed to ZT2 (no rainbow animals).

Personally, I'd be happy to accept a few weirdly coloured animals if it meant getting 10 different realistic coat colours for the wolves (and any of the other animals) - that said, chances are you'd never see any modded content in PZ (on the animal market or otherwise), unless you specifically installed said mods yourself (that's sort of the entire point of modding).

Hey guys I’ve been around the zt2 community so I’m familiar with the mods as well. IMO I think zt2 needed mod support obviously but I think frontier is doing a great job with the game so far and we don’t need it at the moment. The games less then 2 months old let’s see what frontier has to offer. As for Hendrix he doesn’t really design anymore and the AD team barely has time for radical remake nowadays. And of course zt2 mods are free it’s bluefangs game.

Well they're certainly not filling me with confidence when they would rather add 'new' animals for a paid DLC (arctic wolves) than improve the animals included in the base game (timber wolves). There's really no good excuse why any of the animals (especially wolves) have so little variation between individuals. THIS is a fan made remake of the gray wolf from ZT2 from 2013 - how on earth have we ended up with less variety in a game from 2019? Did they decide it wasn't important? Do they have plans to go back and improve the variation of the base animals? Was the white timber wolf variant skin removed so they could add arctic wolves to their first DLC? As you say, we're going to have to wait and see what happens.

I don’t really know if they’ll add variations to existing animals or not and I’m familiar with the Wolf I’ve used it. I think maybe the reason is they’ve already got 76 animals in game now 80 with the dlc content. Plus there’s so much more going on in planet zoo. I still agree with some other’s I could not go back to playing zt2 after playing planet zoo. Planet zoo is light years ahead of zt2 in so many ways. Exhibit building is so much more advanced plus the animals actually climb in planet zoo as compared to scenery for the most part in zt2.

Anyone going back to try out ZT2, really needs to install Radical Remake - it fixes the ugly ui, adds a bunch of amazing model edits/retextures/variants and fixed a lot of issue with the game in general. You'd probably also want a hack to allow you to place scenery items off the grid, so the placement limitations don't drive you insane. I wouldn't dream of touching vanilla ZT2, as it's just way past its sell by date at this stage. I would imagine when most people think back fondly of ZT2 they're thinking of RR - I've played it recently and it still holds up incredibly well for such an old game. Sadly, it's reached the limits of how much you can mod such an old game engine before it just breaks, which is why a lot of people moved on.

I was still playing up through like, 2016 or so when it stopped working via Crossover on my iMac. I bought a new laptop this year because said-iMac was on the outs, anyway, and Planet Zoo was in the wings...

I had all of those mod installed, including Radical Remake. It holds up well, all things considered but I just can't go back to it after playing Planet Zoo. The building just feels way too limited as far as the exhibits are concerned with Planet Zoo in the mix.

But all of the animal options... Those are still amazing, and frankly, kind of messing with my expectations. Haha.

On the topic of PZ plants? I hate the entire system with a passion. Firstly, the continent matching system is dumb and unrealistic - just limits enclosure design for no good reason. ZT2 foliage was amazing. You know why? Because they let people mod and the community produced an amazing variety of plants to fill in the gaps. Almost anything you could want was available, and if it wasn't you could add them yourself, or request for someone to make them for you. Sure, the plants in PZ look great but there's just so little choice; I'm not sure they'll ever add enough plants in DLC to satisfy me (especially if they don't remove the daft continental restrictions).

The "continent matching system" is annoying in terms of keeping animals happy, but... I like the design of almost all the plans in Planet Zoo. Even the modded plants in ZT2 were very rarely satisfying for me to plop down. I just can't get beyond the graphics with the way most of the bushes looked. Trees were fine, but the bushes and smaller pieces always bugged me. But that's a preference/taste thing.

I think adding more foliage as time goes on will help the variety, as would updating the continent restrictions. TBH, I would prefer they adjust that to be biome-specific and then have a list of "suggested" plants/foliage for a given animal that will increase happiness beyond a certain threshold (for example, they could be fairly happy with foliage from a similar biome but you might only be able to hit 90% or so at a max--but if you include the suggested plants it would allow them to hit 100%).

PZ will be a good game when they iron out the bugs/QoL issues, but I don't know if it will ever be a truly great game without the help of the modding community.

For me, as far as the modding is concerned, what really helped ZT2 was the flexibility provided by all of the additional building pieces and the inspiration that having access to a much wider pool of animals allowed. And many of them were fantastically developed!

I actually get why they wouldn't want to open things up and actively support modding quite yet because they would rather people pay for DLC. This makes perfect sense to me for the time being. I kinda hope they change their tune on it after the game has run its course, but that is a way's away. They did release that Thememaker's ToolKit that allowed people to develop new scenery items. Not sure that they would do something like that with Planet Zoo -- and if they did, I'm not so sure that animals would be feasible (in fact, I kinda doubt it). But that blows things wide open if they can. Because then it's a community effort--and not just the group of developers at Frontier.

And animals are, for me anyway, what really inspire me. "Oh, I'll create a section of my zoo dedicated to these animals!" The shape and form of the exhibit for that animal is what drives the way everything looks around it. So adding more animals will inspire more creativity, etc.

What I think about planet zoo and zoo tycoon 2 is

Planet zoo animal, behaviour ai and skins are much better than zoo tycoon 2.

What planet zoo lack currently is the numbers of animal /species. And the lack of many fencings, foliage like in zoo tycoon .

Planet zoo game is a like upgraded zoo tycoon 2 with a better, nicer texture, graphics and animal behaviour ai.

It would be great if planet zoo release more animal packs foliages and barrier packs. Or maybe subspecies packs.

It would totally own zoo tycoon 2.

As planet zoo is only just released for a month. Many time will be improve over time .. I believe and I hope so

Give them some time.
