Planet Zoo: Wetlands Animal Pack arriving 12 April

Platypuses are so precious šŸ˜ thank you so much for them 🄰

Also crazy about the possibility of biome packs and all the speculation it would bring about another packs.
Extremely excited by the fact that less popular animals still have a chance to end up in the game 🤩

Also we still haven seen the caiman so maybe it will be so much distinct from the one that we already have, that we would all love it from the beginning 🤩 the sign in the trailer indicates that it’s going to be green which is very interesting and it’s actually the animal I am anticipating the most right now.

Anyone else notice the new signs? They look pretty good, but it’s a bit sad that they don’t look stylized at all— weirdly enough, I loved the cartoony North America pack signs!

My overall takes by animal:
  • Capybara is a great addition, very excited even though I’ve never seen one in zoos
  • Even though it’s not a realism focused pick, the platypus is really wonderful and it’s great to finally get another Oceanian animal
  • Otter will probably be my favorite of the pack; so useful in just about any zoo and so so cute
  • Crane is unexpected but it’s always nice to get another bird and I look forward to using it
  • Water Buffalo is fine and I’ll probably find ways to use it
  • Lechwe is weird but I mean it could be worse
  • Caiman is a bit of a disappointment but ultimately I’ll never criticize more biodiversity
  • I’m surprisingly excited for the newt— it might even be a fully aquatic exhibit!

It is kind of nice to see for once, that the most expected themes among the community weren't the right answer. A fun surprise!

Reasons why I like this pack:
A bird, a rodent, and only one (well-picked) member of Carnivora. I'm so happy that this wasn't another half carnivore pack.
I also like the fact that we are exploring other themes than region-based ones.

It is also nice to see a newt, even though the choice of species feels a bit random.

While a water buffalo makes perfect sense for this pack, this is one of the rare occasions where the domesticated version of an animal is the way to go. As others have pointed out, the wild ones aren't held in captivity. Perhaps this was a result of the backlash from picking a llama over a guanaco or vicuna?

The caiman doesn't bother me too much, but I get the criticism. An African Crocodilian would have been the more logical way to go in this category.

What I miss the most in this pack are more birds. Wetlands and birds just go hand in hand (or wing I guess?), especially a pelican, duck, or swan would have been a great addition. At least this theme makes me hopeful that something like a coastal theme could bring some of these in the future.

I'm happy about this to be honest. I like the cartoonish style too, but the animal signs we have in the game are all over the place and can never be used in a coordinated way because none of them fit well with each other. So some more generic ones would be highly appreciated!

HYPED!

and luckily I stopped building my croc/reptile dome when the update was announced bc I had a feeling they would add a croc and I would have to start over haha.

btw this is my first post here so, happy to be here guys!
Welcome on board!

The more I think about it, the more am I bummed that we didn't get a pelican in this pack, because it feels like it would have been a perfect fit. Also Allen's Swamp Monkeys could have worked great here. I'm happy with the buffalo and the lechwe is a surprisingly awesome choice in its own right, but it just feels like there's still something missing to round it all off. But that's complaining on a very high level, because the four other choices are absolutely outstanding. :D

Oh, yeah! This totally makes up for my positive covid-test today  (Could you possibly just release it today, I could really use that during quarantine now...)

I love the choice of a biome pack, because it suggests super versatile packs in the future. For me, capybara, platypus, otter and crane are the absolute winners of the pack. Buffalo, caiman and the antelope are more "okay, I guess", but variety is always welcome and I'm surely going to use them here and there.

I won't be home when it is released, but I'm hoping for some game time by the end of april!

Wow, can genuinely say I wasn’t expecting a Wetlands Pack. And I love a good surprise 😊 Also excited to see a possible shift towards packs that aren’t geographically-limited! There are so many species that deserve representation in PZ, and many from places that aren’t likely to see a dedicated regional DLC. Additionally, the shift to biomes/environments make me hopeful we may see a greater amount of future DLC than what is currently assumed. Here’s to hoping PZ continues growing well past 2022!

With that said, if I’m being honest I’m not totally enthused with how this pack was executed. As others have mentioned there are four highly-requested and more unique habitat picks included in this roster, two picks that could have gone towards more requested/iconic options, and one pick that is honestly disappointing. The Capybara and Asian Small-Clawed Otter were two of the community’s most requested mammal species and understandably so. The Capybara is totally unique from any animal species currently in PZ and additionally is a much needed rodent, an Order of mammals that until recently was completely absent from the game. The Asian Small-Clawed Otter is incredibly common in captivity with a strong conversation message and will be PZ’s second otter species, adding some needed diversity as its visually quite distinct from the Giant Otter. Additionally, both the Platypus and Red-Crowned Crane are highly requested species and are from Orders that until now have been completely absent from PZ. The Platypus will be the game’s first monotreme (and hopefully not last, holding out hope for an Echidna) and adds to an incredibly limited roster of Australian wildlife in PZ. With the Red-Crowned Crane, we are finally getting an additional, truly-winged bird species since the initial release of PZ. Out of the literal thousands of bird species that fit in this category, PZ only had two till now, the Greater Flamingo and Indian Peafowl. So grateful to have the crane as an inclusion (although it does still leave me admittedly wanting more, as the incredible absence of avians in PZ only becomes more apparent with each new DLC).

Now this leaves us with the Wild Water Buffalo, Nile Lechwe, and Spectacled Caiman as the remaining habitat roster. None of these species were highly requested on any of the community’s major platforms and none bring anything truly unique or necessary to PZ. I can say though that at least we will finally have a true, Asian hoof-stock species (although there are higher requested and arguably more iconic species like the Blackbuck, Gaur, Takin, or Markhor still absent). The most disappointing out of all the roster though is easily the Spectacled Caiman. It was obviously only chosen for this limited roster because Frontier was in need of an easy-to-implement species. I understand that not every species in an animal pack can be truly unique (Frontier has to make money on the DLC and perhaps that would be too much of a financial risk), but there are better ā€œclone-likeā€ species they could have selected. Even if they felt like they needed to stick with a crocodilian, there are still more requested, geographical unique, and visually unique options. The Nile Crocodile is very popular within the PZ community and would be the game’s first African crocodilian. There’s also other species like the Orinoco Crocodile or Chinese Alligator that have a stronger conservation-based message. I’m all for more habitat reptilians in PZ and will continue to advocate for them, but the Spectacled Caiman just feels like a financial cope-out. Why not introduce the game’s first habitat turtle through a Alligator Snapping Turtle or large softshell turtle species? Also why do all DLC-introduced, habitat reptiles need to be crocodilians? There’s a whole gamut of other interesting reptile Orders with large species. Additionally, though I’m thrilled to see the Red-Crowned Crane included, an additional waterfowl species would have fit wonderfully in this pack and may have helped ease some of the community’s adamant (and honestly justified) outcries for additional birds.

I say all this not to be negative or put Frontier on the hot seat so-to-speak, but because I truly care about the future of Planet Zoo and hope Frontier takes advantage of all the possibilities it offers. I know the Devs have put in a ton of continued work on this game and for that I thank you all deeply. ā¤ļø

That reminds me, this is the third year in a row we get a pack on the Tuesday before easter. And the year before we got in said Easter week a JWE DLC...

Capybara - I'm still surprised by the overwhelming popularity of this giant rodent in this community. But its common in zoos, and adds a unique animal to the game, so I'm happy to see it join the roster. The model looks spot on. But the hot water baths? For the capybara its an unnatural behavior limited to a few Japanese zoos as far as I am aware. Seems like a cop out on Frontier's part, in lieu of providing any meaningful new game feature. How is "bathing" any different than all the animals that can already wade, splash, play, etc. in the water?

Platypus - How awesome is this! Totally unexpected. Fun to see Frontier get a surprise over on everyone, even after yesterday's hints. Also a pleasant surprise that they correctly included its burrowing behavior. Hopefully we can put the burrow entrance in vertical creek banks.

Asian Small-clawed otter - Finally a cute otter! Unfortunately this probably means I'll never get my sea otter, but I didn't really expect to anyway. I was worried it was too much to hope for a second otter at all. I really hope that Frontier has some amazing animation to go with these critters, and that there water depth requirements aren't too ridiculous. Think of all the awesome opportunities for enrichment. With PZ's modular building system otter tubes would be so incredibly awesome!

Unfortunately given that Frontier already announced their enrichment pieces, were unlikely to get anything additional or fun. A smaller version of the same feeder already in the game. Um, yeah?

Wild Water Buffalo - Number of wild water buffalo in zoos: 0. This is bizarre as the choice of pretending to include Camelus ferus in the game. Just enter the realm of reality and call it Bubalus bubalis. Its still exotic to most of the world.

Spectacled Caiman - Huge miss for me. Another south american caiman. Really? Who thought that was a good choice. Sure we need more SA diversity. I was really excited about the idea of a Spectacled bear, but another caiman doesn't add diversity to the game. Another crocodilian would have been fine, if they had put some though into the choice. The Chinese alligator would have been great. Hailing from another unrepresented region in PZ, its cute short snout is visually distinct from other crocodilians, and its critically endangered, with a large breeding and conservation effort in real-life zoos, plus it fits the exact same size niche as the spectacled caiman.

Red-crowned Crane - YES! Finally a bird. And what a gorgeous bird. But even more importantly it provides a model for a ton of bird mods so we can finally start adding some realistic biodiversity to the game. Cranes are very well represented in zoo collections, and are often utilized in mixed species exhibits.

Nile Lechwe - Wouldn't have been my first choice for next antelope to be included, but my picks wouldn't have fit in an aquatic pack. An ungulate is a clever way to add diversity to this pack, but I probably would have picked an aquatic cervid (PĆØre David's deer, brow antlered deer, barasingha, marsh deer, or the related water chevrotain). But the Nile lechwe has striking colors and I'm sure it will look good in the game.

new exhibit animal, the smallest of its species - the Danube Crested Newt
Huh? How can an entire species be the smallest of its species? Looks like Frontier is still struggling with 9th grade taxonomy. And why would you choose the smallest of anything for an exhibit animal? The animals are already so miniscule and hard to find in those giant static boxes as to be pointless. For me Frontier usually misses the mark with their exhibit animal choices. Sticking with fully aquatic amphibians this would have been a perfect opportunity for the highly requested axolotl. Personally I would have been over the moon to see the caiman I vetoed earlier pop up here; the caiman lizard that is! How gorgeous is he! Big enough to be seen, and a whole rainbow of colors.

To be honest, you dont have to make the water "hot spings", you can just make a regular pool of water in which capybaras will chill, they do so commonly in zoos. Just dont add any mist and you will have a regular water. As for the "other animals do this already", no they really dont. They swim in water to traverse it, but they never lay in it, or bath in shallow pools like it will be available now.

Oh no, I couldn't hate it anymore....

I like platypus and capybara....that's it.

Way to mash a bunch of random animals together that weren't requested. šŸ‘

Put this thing on SALE immediately.

Re: species rarity in zoos, I think there's an element just sometimes need to consider where sometimes a species' iconicness/fame is just going to supercede the real world commoness in zoos. If a species like the Platypus is a household name then it's going to be significant points in its favour.
