Horizons Planetary shipyards

Greetings all,
this is my first post on the forum, I am enjoying Elite Dangerous a lot and the only thing that I think is missing are the shipyards on planets. I've searched the forum already and have found that one of the developers Michael Brookes stated that there should be planetary shipyards on planetary outposts with rings, I have explored maybe a hundred of them but have not found a single shipyard. Is this possibly a bug? Will the planetary shipyards be added in 2.1? Thank you for any answers :)

Hi,

First of all, just to be sure: If you don't have Horizons, you can't land on a planet - you're posting in the Horizons discussion, but just thought it was worth being clear.
Second: If you use the system navigation option, the second tab on the screen that opens will tell you all of the facilities (if there are any) at each of the planetfall sites. It's a lot faster than landing on the planet and looking. The bigger sites have more facilities usually.

Hope that helps some.

Thanks for your reply. I own Horizons and I used the tab in the facilities check for shipyards on planetary outposts :) I know there is one shipyard at planetary outpost i-Sola, so the functionality is there, I just thought there could/would be more.

Only the large planetary stations have shipyards (those beautiful large circular city like stations for example).
There are many of them.

No others unfortunately, the shipyard in Brestling was part of a community goal. I also remember Michael Brooks stating that the large cities have shipyards, it has never been the case, even during the beta test.

Hopefully they will add more surface shipyards in the future.

Unfortunately they don't mate. Only I-Sola in Brestling.

I was wishing very hard than planetary shipyards would be in 2.1, Unfortunately they're not.

So many beautiful places out there in so many places, I want to call one of them "home" and store my fleet there.

Maybe one day.

Welcome to the game commander, as others have explained only the large settlement have shipyards.

I hope we in the future will see actual shipyards, where you can see the ships linedup and maybe even ship construction sites.

Can someone give me an example of a large settlement with a shipyard? I must have visited hundreds by now, can't find any with a shipyard.

Thanks for your replies and nice welcome. Maybe it is only a bug and really the big settlements should have shipyards, technically it should not be that different from spaceport shipyards.

Thanks, but that is the post the Op and myself are referring to. Michael said those surface ports should have shipyards, those shipyards never actually made it into the game for some reason.

The only surface shipyard that seems to exist is I-Sola, that was the result of a community goal.

Ok, I've never actually searched for one so don't know by first hand :) But are you sure they are not in, MB confirmed and has not de-confirmed it later on?

Mr. Brooks could we get some clarification concerning this issue?

We'll I've docked at hundreds of those large starports, never seen one except the CG port I-Sola. Quite a big deal was made about I-Sola (I have a base there) It stocks every ship in game, unfortunately at a premium.

I agree with you I to have been to a few of the city ports and have never seen them with a shipyard only the one at I-Sola and to
the OP it's just a wait and see for now..

Do you guys think it would be feasible to prepare a bug report on this matter? I am inclined to think that the functionality of planetary shipyards is in the code it was just forgotten to be enabled?

I don't know why you'd build anything large like a ship on a planet when you have low and zero gravity environments easily available to do it.

It makes perfect sense that there are no planetary shipyards from a practical, cost and engineering point of view it's just much much easier to build something heavy out where it is close to weightless.

Nah, it's not a bug. I think Michael Brooks just made a mistake in his original post. The community goal at I-Sola was very specific, the first planatery port to have a shipyard.

@popuptoaster - Except the fact that there is a planetary port that stocks every ship & module in game.

This is of course true, however you have plenty of space for ship storage on planets, whereas you need to be very conservative with space and weight on space stations. I would imagine that ship would be built in zero gravity environment then flown to surface shipyards for sale.

Wouldn't it make more sense for the shipyards to be in space? Construction of space ships is probably easier to do in zero g.

With the cheap energy we have in the Elite universe its cheaper to build it on a low gravity world. The only reason to do it in space would be if the the ship is so huge it can't escape the gravity of a planet. So only Capital ships and parts for starports and outpost would be build in space.
