Playing Elite with Google Cardboard

Worth noting that Trinus now supports Steam VR as well (additional option in Trinus server sensor modes). This also brings improved performance.

Does Trinus do any kind of emulation so that ED sees it as a HMD? Using SBS with ED really kills the game...

Yes, it works! The old SBS method is no longer needed! Using SteamVR improves the experience considerably (from 10 minutes testing only).

1. In Steam, install SteamVR
2. Start Trinus server and under sensor mode, select Steam VR.
3. You will be asked for the SteamVR directory. Select steam/steamapps/common/OpenVR (not SteamVR as prompted)
4. Run SteamVR. Go through setup, selecting standing, not room scale.
5. Run Elite, go to options, 3D, select HMD (headphones)

There's now a training mission for VR to check that it works. I don't have time for more testing, but this might just be a viable way to play the game now.

Edit: after setting up the first time, just start Trinus and run Elite. SteamVR will autostart. To return to normal 2D again, change game settings AND go into SteamVR settings and turn off autostart under developer options. Otherwise it will always run with Elite.

I have both, in my humble opinion RiftCat works just a bit better. More stable, less delay, simplier, better tracking.

So I tried both TrinusVR and Vridge, and while the setup with VRidge was easy I found the quality a little lacking (via USB tethering in both cases).

TrinusVR was finnicky to get connected but once it was it looks better. My only issue is that once I start up Elite, the view angle of the HMD is way off center, and I can't seem to re-center it. Even after doing the calibration with SteamVR, and confirming it works mostly correctly with VRidge, Trinus has me looking up at the room and to the right to be looking 'straight on' at the menu or cockpit.

Can anyone shed some light on how to re-calibrate what Trinus is assuming 'center' to be?

You can set up hot keys on Trinus to reset the view on the sensor's tab. (I always set mine to F11) and have it mapped to either a spare joystick button, or voice attack 'reset view' command.

Is there a list of phones known to work with cardboard and ED?
I've got a cheap Moto-G and a GTX 760. I'm afraid that's too low on both ends.
Basic criteria for the phone for a better VR experience:
At least fullHD screen, minimum 5 inch.
Gyroscopic sensor for headtracking.
The others, like GPU are just candy on top, these two are essential. I tried it on my Nexus 4, tracking worked pretty well, but the 720p just did not cut it.

I tried it before with my Nexus 5. It worked OK, but it started giving me headaches after a while and I haven't used it since. (Nothing to do with the phone, just VR in general)

I would say the best results I've had have been with;

1. GeForce GTX-760. (E : D resolution set to 1600*900)
2. Nexus 6P Phone. (2560 by 1440 pixels, resolution at 518 pp.)
3. Colorcross headset.
4. ED Tracker (Haven't found a way to get the tracking to be spot on yet)

You can actually play the game with that (Hell, I've even played CQC with setup).

Anything less than that, I would say its good to show off to people in the training missions but not play the full game.

Watch out for the next Top Shift, I'm doing a Trinus vs Riftcat comparison to see which setup works best.

Hi all.
I would like to ask you if is possible to change settings of side panels in the ship. When you are playing in SteamVR mode panels are unreadable and they are so far. Do you know if it is possible to change position (closer) or size of the panels ?

I gave a it try today with my smartphone on a VR box. It was an interesting experience and I could taste how ED looks in VR. Really amazing, but after 10 minutes of gameplay I noticed my phone was getting hot. So I unplugged itand decided that the game is not worth the candle. I suggest to not stress too much our precious pieces of tech. Better to rely on expensive toys meant to play ED in VR, like the Oculus and Vive.

Ideam Christmas Present?

There have been a few updates since the last time I tested Trinus.

Can this be done with the Oculus Rift for Samsung android phones, such as the 6 and 7?

In short yes, you're referring to Gear VR by Oculus - essentially a partnership between Oculus and Samsung. The Gear VR is a somewhat simple plastic headset with lenses and some touch controls on the side so you can control things on your Galaxy while in VR. This is essentially Google Carboard and as such you'd set it up the same way as this details.

No. If you haven't driven the SRV in VR yet, or the Eagle, give those a try. In those ships the panels use a smaller font but they are a good deal closer and as such look far better in VR. One thing you can do in graphic settings, at the bottom, is turn off the animations you see when you look at the side panels. While the animation is pretty cool after seeing it a few dozen/hundred times it just starts to waste time and slow things down. When that's off the panels pop in instantly and as such feel smoother.
