Playing Elite with Google Cardboard

Just a quick question, is it possible to just use your phone for head tracking?

Yes, Trinus Gyre can do the headtracking without streaming video to the phone. Just skip the last step under "running it all".

I assume you'll be playing with your phone clenched between your teeth. :)

If you want to try this (which I do) and you want something a little more high-end than a chopped up pizza box, there's always the "ColorCross"... basically the same thing, but in plastic... which will take a device from 4 to 7 inches, has lenses that are adjustable sideways for "interpupillary distance" AND screw in/out for focus, comes with straps, padding for your face, and the magnetic "left click" thingy, and costs about the same as two google cardboard kits (about AU$40). You can find them on ebay. Here's a video about them and here's a user review.

It would be interesting to see how Trinus Gyre works with actual TrackIR doing the tracking rather than the phone, as it's the tracking that seems to be causing the most amount of lag for me (and un-reliability).

Enjoy chaps

Excellent, I ordered one right away for £2.50
I already have a Nexus 7 Wifi

I'm happy, maybe useful for me in more ways.. I only have 1 usable hand (wouldn't ya know, it's my off-hand)

I wonder, all I need do it drop my phone on to the top of my hat as you see on my picture there.... But then I can't wear my headphone... Gonna be hard enough that I wear glasses

How are people finding keeping them on their heads? I saw the video and the idea of the eye protection is good, I just wondered if it causes the cardboard to cut in to your head or if anyone had another solution?

Headphones and head put enough tension to keep a cardboard-stick rigid wrt head.

Thanks for the heads up about the Trinus Gyre app :)

I have a Durovis Dive VR headset at home I'd like to try this out with.

Hopefully it doesn't burn out my poor old laptop in the process...

Cheers

OK folks, some update here. You streaming horizontal squizzed image. There is workaround. (Thanx to Nicus for help)

1) add custom resolution - 1920x2160 (nvidia - in nvidia panel, ati- in registry)
2) in DisplaySettings.xml put 1920x2160 need set to windowed mode
3) set SBS in game
4) run stream in trinus as always, without fake3d. Trinus will just fit streamed large window to his sbs view.
5) enjoy SBS without horizontal squeeze

Very, very interesting. I just received my Durovis headset and bought a Nexus 5 to go along with it. I managed to get it "kinda working". The tracking is quite good and the immersion is so-so.

I will try your settings above cause I felt mine made the planets look egg-shaped and rotating the craft around a station twisted and contorted the space stations. Felt like I was on mushrooms having a bad dream...

You will abe to play in normal propotrion. This is workaround only. Solution is bring to game non-squeezzed sbs view as an option to choose.

Same here, will try it during the weekend: so far I stopped testing because inside a station it was really... disturbing
