I just love the twin rotating lance nacelles. That fan concept would have been perfect. It's not too late for FD to rename the Courier and implement a more true to the original design, but I guess that's almost entitled sounding.
yes, i love it too, but heck, i'd take it even if they didn't spin. that fan made model just hits the nail on the head!I just love the twin rotating lance nacelles. I thank you, sir.
Anyway, Frontier have enough on their plate with 1.3 without worrying about some old skool nutters like me complaining about the lack of historic ships. Both the current Clipper and Courier are wonderful designs in themselves, in no way am I criticising the design, artwork, sound or anything else.
If the current Clipper was called the Courier and the current Courier was called the Scout or 'Custodian' (if it really needs to begin with a 'C') or some such there would probably have been no complaints at all.
It does just feel a bit of shame that the ships aren't all aligned with previous games, when there doesn't seem to be a particularly good reason why that shouldn't be the case.
For instance the Cobra and Sidewinder are brilliant realisations of the original ships, whereas the Adder and the FDL bear almost no resemblance to what they looked like before. If you're going to realise new ships why not give them totally new names rather than pinch the names of ships that have gone before which looked different and did different things?
In the case of the Courier, it was the iconic ship of FE2 and FFE, in much the same way that the Cobra mk3 was the iconic ship of the original Elite. Lots of folks are attached to it for that reason.
There's nothing to lose and much to gain to by tieing the current game into the old one; lots of lore, lots of history, lots of mystery and lots of engaging story. Breaking that, even in small ways, seems to be detracting from some of the core 'Eliteness' of the entire franchise.
We'll see. It's Frontier's game at the end of the day.
Peace to all,
Cheers,
Drew.
you're asking for something that is already in the game
old Imperial Courier = Clipper

please look at the pictures of the old courier. the clipper looks like a luxury yacht (and a very nice one at that) the real courier looks like a bird of prey. the fan that did the rework captured the real couriers essence perfectly. the current imperial offerings do not look like war ships. we have a luxury yacht and a soon to be sports car. both are very nice but neither evokes the same response as the real courier does. just counting the number of engines is not the same as replacing the look and feel of the old beauty.you're asking for something that is already in the game

this, this is exactly how i feel. i was excited to hear the courier was part of the plan for ED, i ground out my imperial ranks in anticipation of it. i loved the fact one of the frontier art team was talking with the fan about their replication of the courier and hoped they would pull in their sketch of it (which essentially smoothed out the panel look) into the game. It's not a case of asking for a ship with the capabilities of the old courier, that, indeed, might be something like the Clipper. No, what we want is the old courier. It's the shape, the icon, the vision, the memories, the feel, the threat, the bright blue streamers. The clipper is a fine ship, but it is not the old courier. And clearly, the new one isn't either.
Like the Cobra, the courier is an iconic part of the elite universe. Indeed, the most iconic ships in the elite universe are the Cobra and the Courier, followed by the Asp and Krait. To not get that iconic shape is what upsets us. Well, me, anyway. It's not game killing, it's just dream killing.
I am hoping FD have plans for a "Classic Ships" expansion in the future that will let people get their hands on the obsolete ships of the last 300 years. The old Courier and Clipper, the Cobra MKI, The Eagle MkII with the dodgy retros, the Constrictor, some of the pokey little fighters and in system shuttles.
If you want this campaign to succeed, it's not Michael you need to call first. You need to contact one of your fellow authors and get a bovid related protest movement going....![]()
FYI they just renamed the Diamondback to Diamondback Scout. So such an idea is not that unrealistic. You should have a chat with Michael.![]()
Frontier are well aware of this affair by now. They haven't mentioned it at all in the newsletter, that means they don't intend to do anything about it. Enough is enough.
Cheers,
Drew.
i think they are aware of it and they added a sly below the belt blow by changing the name of the diamondback to diamondback SCOUT knowing people had suggested changing the name of the Courier
The issue is that I don't want a 'worthy successor', I want something like the original ship.
If FDEV can create close, updated versions of the classic ships like the Sidewinder, Eagle and Cobra, why should we have to settle for the lore book going out the window.
It's not like the Courier isn't a key ship when it's one of the three ships on the introduction of Elite 2.
What FDEV have done with some of the updated classic ships is brilliant, but the courier is just tragic.
