Please Center/Fix the Fer De Lance

I doubt that im doing anything but waste my time right now. As surely many players have spoken up to this over the years but i have to try....

The fer de lance is unquestionably one of the most beautiful ships in the game both inside and out. Its cockpit interior in my opinion would easily rival even the imperial ships. And yet we have an off center design..... whyyyyyy? their is no point to this. This is a straight up starfighter. not a fleet ship. if someone was to assist or be part of the 'crew', their seat shouldnt be sharing the front and forcing both pilot and crew member to have an off center seating in the worst fashion in all of ED.... have the other seat off center and to the back like the Krait line and other ships have done. that works perfectly. in fact, its bridge in the farther back area would be perfectly suited to this if you simply had the seat direclty behind in the back or to the side as if to monitor the side panels and look very good! In fact in many modern day large aircraft, the engineer would have his own seat to the side in the cockpit to monitor every and all engine details. which, in a ship of this high performance caliber, it would make sense to have a crew member seated there watching engine vitals as the pilot pushes the ship to its limits in combat. but seriously, if we have to have a "copilot" setup... just have them directly behind. not squished together side by side... the bridge has more than enough room behind it and is even elevated already so its practically begging for that much more efficient design. how often (if at all), do you see players jumping into a fer de lance with another player as a crew member anyway? you cant launch fighters, you dont have much practical use carrying an SCV garage in this thing (assuming one can drive it while one pilots the ship to begin with). so really. whats the point of a 2nd crew member anyway?

Please frontier... this ship is beautiful and its experience in flying it shouldnt be getting tarnished by a stupidly awkward and pointless off center design. it works ok for ships like the cobra and the python. but NOT this ship.... Again, i doubt you guys would fix it and change it given how long its been like this but I have to try as this is what the forums is for... to hear what your community wants and make changes right? Please prove me wrong about wasting my time. I want to see that you care enough to change this. it really is maddening. especially ships like the anaconda and the type 9, among many other MUCH LARGER ships, dont have to deal with this and get a perfectly centered PIC cockpit position like they deserve while the FDL doesnt....

Already asked , i even wanted them to ARX new cockpit. but lets face it it's never going to happend XD. Paintjob / kit are "easy" cockpit design may be à bit more complex for the money they can earn with it.

sometimes a game company shouldnt be thinking about trying to make money for every single improvement to a game and just needs to do it because its whats best for the game and for the players playing it. small things like this can make the biggest impact. You're probly right in that its never going to happen. but I'm going to keep trying on this anyways and keep bugging them till they do. And if enough of us bug them about it, they just might. As the old saying goes, "the squeaky wheel gets greased"

The question is: how squeaky this wheel really is?
I, for one, really like off center FDL seat. It reminds me motor boat I used to drive in my youth. It was red as well, similar pointy nose and steering on the right. At first when I got into FDL it felt bit strange (moved from Python or Anaconda), so much visibility and sitting on the opposite side. But after few days I liked it so much so when I got into other ship I had - they felt strange.

Another reason - it brings some desired variety to the game.

I like it too. I play in VR though, which I have been told makes it feel a lot less akward.

I'm 10000000% for that , but sadly FD are really silent on many point, so we/I cant really tell if they prefer the game or the money. Probably bit of both.
It's sad to me as I love this game, but i'm not develloping it so I cant really blame.

would you really prefer this over a perfectly centered cockipit view like in the anaconda or the krait? my respect to you if you do as everyone has their preferances admittedly. im however definitely not the only one with this issue with the FDL. I'm sure you would like a centered view or at least not mind it and adapt to it much easier.

You should try the FDL in VR. The cockpit design is exquisite. One of the best for situational awareness, especially when the enemy is above you. Zero complaints.
Though I admit on xbox it kind of irked me.

i appreciate the advice but i unfortunately cant afford that kind of money on a proper quality VR set as a person in pilot training irl. if I ever do get one however I'll definitely try it! but yea... for those playing the game normal, its a pretty frustrating and pointless design choice for a cockpit.

This. Frontier has shown no interest to player requested feature and content during the past. Let alone fleet carriers have been posponed several times until a delay of 1.5 years or so. Their actions clearly relfect a disconnection to the community as they are unready to even consider community request for content like new ships for instance. At this point I even doubt that FDev still has the required know-how to further develope and most importantly maintain the game long term as lots of the original developers left.

They did - in December 2018. It's called the Mamba.

What I sometimes find helpful in awkward cockpits when in normal space is switching to discovery mode and using the Composition Scanner as it provides a centre line of sight - in fact it's the only use I've found for the ship's compostion scanner.

This doesn’t work in supercruise - at least for me, but you can use the scrolling speed bars on either side for vertical alignment, and for horizontal alignment just mentally draw a vertical line up from the centre of the main scanner and you’ll soon find a cockpit feature that you can use as a quick reference point for horizontal alignment.

For what it’s worth I really like the quirky FDL layout.

ummm... you know the mamba is a completely different ship from the FDL right? they dont fight in any way the same. thats like telling a python player to go play a krait instead.

Welll.... that's what I usually do :p

I admit, the comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek. On the other hand, the asymmetric cockpit is one of the characteristics of the FdL. Without it, it wouldn't be the FdL any more.

To be honest - I don't know.

Bit of a background:
I'm not combat oriented pilot, mostly trader with some exploratoin quirk. But once in a while I'm tempted to do bounty hunting and for that I needed some ship. General consensus was either Vulture, FDL or Corvette. Tried Vulture... mediocre results to say the least. Corvette too big to learn combat in one so at some point got FDL. Never done combat in it.

Since I only used her for trading missions (pretty fun cherry picking so you can fit in that limited space) and one failed exploration trip (top engineered FSD + booster and still low range...) I'm bit biased toward "it doesn't look bad". Maybe for combat vessel center cockpit is a must have - my previous experience wasn't so much spoiled for not having one.

Tho I must admit that canopy railing at first feels awkward and misleading. I noticed that I tend to overcompensate my heading since I was centering on the rail instead of ship center axis. Too much rudder to one side due to asymetrical glass. I can agree that for combat pilots it may be an issue and center seat would improve situation dramatically.

Also - I acknowledge that not everyone is a fan of off center seats and also respect that. We all tend to mold environment to suit our needs and preferences. Bit sad you enjoy FLD but your enjoyment is somewhat spoiled by off center position.

However - answering your question if I would like centered one. For me it's rather minor issue and I'm rather indifferent. If FDL would get center seat I wouldn't mind much. I would regret a bit unification and loosing the uniqness of this ship but then wouldn't sit and cry over it. Ideally if we could actually pick which seat you want to occupy but one can dream.

Soo... we have what we get. I hope you'll get fun with your FDL, despite it having seast in the wrong place.

No, it's not, it's a converted pleasure yacht. The fact that it performs superbly as a straight up starfighter is coincidental. Its sister the Mamba, likewise, is a converted racer.
.... its not a pleasure yaght... the dolphin is a pleasure yaht. the orca is a pleasure yacht. the baluga liner is a pleasure yaht. the cutter and clipper can be be called a pleasure yaht. the FDL is literally purpose built for combat. its focus of utilities, weapons, speed and maneuverability in exchange for lack of internals and jump range shouldve made it clear already of what its designed for.
In case you need more confirmation of this, here's the direct description from the game itself...

The Fer-de-Lance is a heavy combat ship manufactured by Zorgon Peterson. With four medium and one huge hardpoint, the ship is a veritable powerhouse, able to mount a challenge even to the Anaconda and Federal Corvette. If the vessel has a drawback it is that it is highly speciailised - consumers are advised that the Fer-de-Lance Is unsuited to activities other than combat.
— In-Game Description

It literally starts off emphasizing its a heavy combat ship. even emphasizing that its purpouse built soley for it alone. so lets get this irrelavant discussion to the current topic straight right now.... It is not a pleasure yaht. Please dont derail the main topic and keep it to the main poste.
