Please fix this thing that passes for a Docking computer

This has been mentioned over-and-over. Filed a bug report myself a long time ago. Its pretty obvious that Frontier doesn't care....

(Lots of Oother SIMPLE things they don't care about as well... Like the Courier being unflyable since the engine volume has been making your ears bleed since 2.3... That's my pet peeve... So simple to fix if they gave a crap...)

'cmon Frontier PROVE me wrong!

I guess you haven't read the thread through then. We have official word from FD.

I've never used it, never saw the point in using something that takes up a slot.

It should be outright removed as a module and just be added in as something all ships can use by merely accessing their right-hand panel.

That I agree with. I mean that it should be a standard module in every ship, with the option of switching it off.
I do see a point of using it as it allows you to do something else in the most frequent and repetitive element of the gameplay.

Also, the only ship I ever had problems docking was... a Sidewinder when I started.

+1

I also like the idea of removing the DC as a module, especially when most larger ships don't even have a class 1 module slot. I mean, just how big are simple, barely-functional computers in this future wonderworld? They seem to be the size of HAL, and just as untrustworthy.

Must admit, I always fly through the mailslot by myself (ironically, especially in big ships) and then just use the DC to park it on a pad.
That being the case, I probably should stop using them completely since it really DOES seem like a waste of, say, a #4 slot on something like a Cutter or Corvette.

The main thing I rely on them for is actually finding my pad on orbital platforms and large surface installations.
Saves me the faff of having to fly around, trying to find the correct pad.

There is so little to do in-game, learn to dock, then learn to dock FA Off. It's so much fun.

[wacko]

Sorry...

I've got better things to do in the game than waste my time in a docking bay. ;)

I don't need to LEARN how to dock. I figured that out 3 years ago. ;)

I totally agree!

And if we are being real here for a second... No single human pilot could ever hope to dock ANY of these ships without computer/AI assistance in the real world. To suggest otherwise is simply too ridiculously clueless to be worth a reply.

As far as module slots goes... I have been saying for years that the DC and at least a Basic Discovery Scanner should be STANDARD Equipment on ALL ships! That would free up (2) Class 2 or 3 module slots on most ships, and would be an instant upgrade to the entire fleet offerings.

If you don't need to use the DC, then you can just turn it off permanently. Same goes for a DS.

HOW MANY TIMES does it have to duck under the toast rack and mess up trying to land on the pad ... Really??? [mad]

Why are people so lazy? I`ve been docking since the start. I love docking. Making it auto really takes the fun out of it. Also you can get away with certain tactics that would otherwise be impossible and save a module space.

While I whole heartedly agree, I'll settle for just getting it working in 2.4 for now! That's a massive achievement that has taken years to pull off!

The little white dot on the compass points you to your pad, so manual landings. And if you have EDDI installed, it tells you where the pad is as you head through the slot.

I'm sure you already knew those things, but just in case....

True dat! ;)

It was pretty well behaved overall as of 2.2.03, but then it went totally in the 2.3 Beta. Still can't fathom how it could get so whacked from 2.2.03 to the beta considering the DC was never included in any of the 2.3 patch notes. ????

Also...When at a planetary base, you can look for your pad to LIGHT UP as soon as your docking request is granted. Most of the time it will be the only pad to light up at that moment, so it is easy to spot from a much further distance than you could actually read the pad number.

YAWN... [rolleyes]

Did you even READ this thread before responding? This has nothing to do with skill. Everything to do with time management in-game.

And way to go there champ! Insult the lady while coming off as an arrogant jerk at the same time. Nice work.

While you are playing with your joystick on the pad, I am already docked and picking up my next stack of missions.

Hybrid DC landings... "Best kept secret in ED" :D

Oh so that's what happened. I just started playing again after being gone for a few months, and I've been like what the hey why is my ship headbutting the station?

Can't they just roll it back to the way it was? It used to work pretty well.

FYI tested an iCourier with a max speed of 885 m/s and a boost speed of 1200 m/s (thanks to a bit of debug engineering) ... and it works just fine. :) But wow, that thing is fast! :D

Wha....holy....how???!!!?!? Is that even possible in the game proper???

EDIT: Nah, some Coriolis testing shows it ain't, but wow that must have been fun!!!!

Docking computer improvements sound good. I've not used one sine the first month of 1.0, but they sound good.

I think it had something to do with the various mass/thruster changes they made to a lot of the ships in 2.3.

No word from FDEV as to that being the cause, but it has to be something connected to the DC's ship control script or whatever it uses that is no longer in sync with the new ship mass and/or thruster strength changes added to 2.3.

Since the DC was not directly touched in that update, something it uses to perform properly must have gotten bent or broken. A lookup table perhaps? One that no longer contains accurate values for the ship it is tasked to fly?

Sarah's comments earlier in this thread kind of alluded to that being the case.

This is sounding pretty good but one thing still needs to be added: If your ship is crashed and exploded by the docking computer you should not be responsible for the rebuy. Think of it like if a valet service crashes your car they are paying for it not you.

Thanks, I see. Well, I hope they get around to adjusting it soon.
