Please implement cross play and cross progression for PC and console clients.

Based on FD's response on this thread already, it looks hopeful and I would guess they are continuing to consider it. Probably also taking into account how costly overall it would result to implement and the current state of how well console manufacturers make their platforms able to network with pc's.

The ED-verse was designed to be the same shared persistence across all modes and platforms. I'd think it would be a boon for the game if every cmdr of any platform could share instances or with a change of networking emphasis in the future.

I'm sure a sizable portion of the console community would instantly double dip if even just cross progression became available. I have a pretty good PC but I built it long after I started playing E:D on Xbox, I just could not be starting from scratch again.

No thanks, I don't want to play with console peasants*

*note: humour, not serious.

LOL, the little sneak in disclaimer.

It's OK to be a PC elitist. It just means when the cross play comes about we all get to go to war like a bunch of angwy wabbits arguing who has the better system.

I could or can understand the console being able to cross play; But allowing the pc to be involved when they have so many more options than a either of the two main consoles have to offer. Would present a problem for the console player when confronted by a pc player. Both console are basically on the same level as to what one can and cannot do. PC's have many more abilities to utilize and would give any one in a cross play a bigger atvantage. OK, having a keyboard and mouse available would be an improvement for the consoles. We still cannot modify any of the particular files which can augment the dymamics like a pc can. Example would be the use of third party addon's like "Voice Attack" or other such program. Having more available keys to configure make playing on a console considerably faster when one can reconfigure multitudes of keys vs a few multiple buttons. But third party programs such as the one stated, makes it even faster. Using A vocal command program is far easier and faster and one doesn't have to remove their hands from their particular control device to do so.

Like I've said, repeatedly, that's only edge-case combat. It ignores the huge potential of playing together.

Thanks to the inspired design of the single shared BGS you already do.

.... and cross-play, in either multi-player game mode, would not change the fact that players in all game modes affect it - because all players affecting the BGS, regardless of game mode, was a design decision taken long before the first console release.

Exactly, the shared platform BGS and all modes access to it is where the real PVP goes on and we can all be equally involved or not depending on our personal choices.

Hey BurnyBurns,

We've addressed this before :)

Hello everyone,

First off, the news of this cross-platform beta for Fortnite is really exciting. As it’s just announced, we'll be watching with interest to see how it goes!

Though we’re excited, we've nothing to announce on how this could effect Elite Dangerous in the future. However, you'll find all the information here on our forums, across our newsletters and social pages should that change.

Thanks :)

You would get so much Kudos for this it would be unimaginable.

I see you're still waffling away at it. :D

Actually, once question I've never been clear on the answer to: with the three platforms being essentially separate, does that mean that there could be three instances of any given Commander name? As in, three different players (one on each platform) with the same Commander name?

Yeah I have both a PS4 and PC account - both have the same name (and a couple from my wing are in the same boat)

I've both had and followed these same, circular discussions on said discussion platform when the Fortnite issue boiled up before and after the Switch client's release. As user of a GaaS I don't give a Pennyless Trader's behind how much Sony wants to wall in their userbase even with GaaS games developed by not Sony-owned teams, like Frontier, nor do really think that anybody should be waiting for Sony. Who've by the way opened the Pandora's Box with Fortnite by setting precedence, proving that their policies are holding up progress and nothing else. The "but let's not make a habit of it"-part doesn't work. Because I can very well make a habit of going to one of the other platforms the game is on. Much easier so, than selling PS4 to all the circle of players who might be playing on other platforms already, so we can play together.

Other example of GaaS with crossplay that adhere's to Sony being the spoilesport: War Thunder. PS4 to PC and PC to XBox crossplay is implemented, but anything involving PS4 and XBox isn't allowed. That's one way to go about it without waiting for Sony to catch up with the times.

Or really, just leave the PS4 out of it and implement the features for XBox and PC. it should be the PS4 users' and Sony's loss, not the loss of XBox and PC players or Frontier, whose business model should be to grow and strenghten their Elite userbase, not to give Sony a backrub.

If Sony's the spoilsport, the joke is on them. Here's a wonderful marketing piece from Nintendo and Microsoft indirectly mocking Sony with the mere fact that they're not as stuck up with their crossplay policies:

It's not the customer's job to make the excuses for Sony. But Sony sure lets all of those who did look like fools, having caved with Fortnite.

MS aren't much better. Take ARK. The only way to play cross platform with Xbox is if you buy from the MS store. If you have bought from Steam then there is no cross play.

Granted Sony are worse but they have allowed cross play in the past before Fortnite - Portal 2 and Rocket league I believe had cross play with PC before Fortnite

Warthunder is also had crossplay with PS4 for a while IIRC

Well with Consoles starting to become more like PC like. I would also support cross-platform. One point Someone ask about Names. There a easy way keep the users name

1 Lestat on different machines would be either a different colour or Font or Adding a PC XB PS when they are log on.

So has War Thunder on PS4. For years. Sony's management are only utter behinds when it comes to console to console cross play.

I still fail to see why one would want to wait until Sony relaxed their policies. If anything, PS4 <-> PC and PC <-> XBone crossplay is doable today and has been done by a couple of games for quite some time, even with Sony's policies intact. That'd be the way to go if a dev studio would commit now. It'd most likely also prepare the technical basis for console to console cross play, should Sony's policies change at some point . That is of course difficult to arrange with the way open works. And cross progression would more likely than not only be able between PC and a single console ecosystem as well. BUt as I said, where there's a will... E.g. make cross play only available as opt in feature for private groups with players limited to one console or PC.

I'd wager though, that given the choice, the concerned people would prefer some crossplay over no crossplay whatsoever.

Just wanted to add a +1 to this post although I think the logistical challenges of doing such is a taller order than we understand.

Bring on the gamepad vs HOTAS wars!

Really crossplay would be a fantastiv new for me, i could play with my pc friends, and KB is not a excuse for this, fdev should bring us crossplay.

Anyone who has kept up with current gaming would know that Nintendo have already stated they're fully supportive of All Platform Crossplay, so there's no reason to wait for their port (if it's even happening).

Next strawman?
It's a strawman scenario in the speculative future but you'll call it a brilliant, inevitable, and necessary move when they actually do it. Whatever actually happens is what should happen, and whatever doesn't happen or hasn't happened yet, is an absurd terrible impossible idea.

Meanwhile, on-topic:

Representative mini-icons like these, in-front of the CMDR's name, would look pretty cool IMO (although probably immersion breaking for those so-inclined):

If by "waffling away at it" you mean "referring to Frontiers design for the game, published over six years ago, regarding all players affecting a single galaxy state, regardless of game mode, which was recently restated in the BGS & Scenarios stream" - yes, yes I am. ;)

That's the waffle!

It's daft waffle but there you go.
