Yes, if we can get an advantage from player crew then we should also have AI crew available to hire that can fill similar roles. Just how much they should be able to do I'll keep my counsel on till we get more details however.

AI co-pilot that can do simple fly from A to B would be fine.
With the space legs" expansion coming up it even makes sense - let me walk around my ship while in SC, and maybe add some extra activities or things to do around the cabin.

You want them (FD) to handle that?

I refer you to the AI debacles. One can only IMAGINE the rivers of tears that would ensue when the borked AI started doing banzai runs with a few mil of cargo onboard................

Absolutely. Serves the same function as autopilot (which I'm totally in favour of) with hopefully added gameplay goodness. Though I have to say I find it extremely odd that anyone could be anti autopilot but pro ai crew pilot.

Most importantly compelling game mechanics in the other roles must be available.
I can only see this being implemented if/when multi crew is properly fleshed out.
In short yes [up]

I think that comes down to the 'realism' aspect. It's one thing to ask a Co-Pilot to take the controls, and another to have a computer do your chores.

This was my issue with thinking about multi-crew and space legs. Watching one of the latest videos from A.N.Other game in development didn't inspire me. People talk about time sinks in ED, well, walking around for 15 minutes just to collect a mission, then get to your ship, sit in a seat while someone else flew it, maybe do some shooting in a turret, then get out of the ship, walk about while the pilot sits in the space ship twiddling thumbs waiting for you...

If I'm sitting in the co-pilots seat in an Adder (for example), what am I supposed to be doing? What about an Engineering station in a Clipper or Type 9? Do the in-game consoles have solitaire loaded at least?

Yeah, its one of those feature that is so often dreamed about but I honestly think in practice will be hardly used by the vast majority of players. NPC crewmates on the other hand have the potential to be an enriching and engaging addition for almost everyone.

I'd just be happy to see the NPC crew in the cockpit in 2.3. They don't have to provide any bonuses beyond what they already do with the SLF, just fill a seat! A setting in the graphics options to toggle them visible/hidden elsewhere in the ship? That'd be plenty good :)

Its a funny thing, today we already have players who are using automated trading and piloting addons, its a layer on top of ED and only feed into the game with normal KB/JS/MS/VA inputs.

it gives those players a clear advantages from other players who do not use these add ons. FD can't forbid it because basically all they do are monitoring the game and give feedback with the controls already attached.

We are not asking for anything that will make the game easier, only a feature that will make the game more FUN! giving orders to a NPC we already got in the fighters, if we can acccept that, we can also accept designated navigators who can fly the ship from point A to B. We are the commanders, and commanders command, they do not do everything by themselves.

So nobody wants autopilot because it breaks the point of the game or whatever, (also no instant ship transfer because the Forum Cry-Munnity loves to suck the fun out of everything), but are over g whelmingly in favor of a copilot flying the ship from A to B. Doesn't this accomplish the same thing as Autopilot? Isn't it just autopilot with a paint job? Man, this is a ludicrous community. Where is the consistency?

I've got news for you... its still just a computer doing your chores. ED is not reality, wether its an autopilot or a npc copilot a computer algorithm is still making the decisions not a real life human.

I think I figured out your thinking. When you play ED you really believe you are there in real life and not just a human sitting at a computer playing a game.

And how exactly does watching the ship travelling by itself makes the game "more FUN"?
Because it would free you from the need to constantly make small inputs and thus able to do things that were more interesting like plotting your course, reading the gal net, admiring the ship in debug cam mode, chatting with nearby commanders and pretty much everything else.

Yes.. if we can then have an auto-combat module, an auto-mining module, an auto-exploration module.
heck no, lets just have an auto-play module, you install it and select what you want it to do and then you sit back and purely watch. that's what so many seem to want.

Replies like that makes me lilt bit sick already - NO ONE is asking about auto game - NO ONE, please read the OP and the discussion before making utter ridiculous claims. [down][down][down]

Which are all things you can not do while the ship is jumping from system to system, as all input is frozen and all interface windows closed due to the instance switch.

So you actually can not do any of those things, except only on long supercruise trips. But wait, what's stopping anyone from doing any of those things on long supercruise trips right now without an autopilot?

Unless of course we come down to the actual reason why people want an autopilot, which is to put ED on background while on AP and do other things, which is why its ludicrous that FD would spend development time supporting such a "feature" instead of making travel more interesting and adding more player agency into it. FD should invest time in improving the game, not facilitating not playing it.
