+++ Power Down Emplacement Power Grid Mission - how do I approach this one ?

Ok I tried the mission a few times, but mostly got driven off by the 3 defending ships, on my last attempt I destroyed the 3 original defenders 2 additional re-inforcements and then met the re-buy from an Anaconda I'd reduced to 27 % , I knew I should have left but you know I was so close [knocked out].......anyway, what hurt most was losing my Dangerous NPC I'd levelled up from harmless :eek:. Ho Hum.

On other power grid missions it's been a case of find the genny and blow it up [usually a red (shield) coloured rectangular building open on one side] which I attack from the open side, but I don't recognise any in the base shown below. So I assumed it was maybe one where I have to interact with the beacons in some way to access the Operational Console and use that to shut it down. Hence trying to clear the defences so I could take the SRV in....which as explained above didn't work out too well for me :rolleyes:.

I gave up abandoned the mission and went and did something less expensive instead.

But.....I really don't like giving up and want to try again so what I'd like is some advice and any tips you'd care to share on how to go about this type of mission on a base like the one shown here.

Have not done a +++ one still yet, but on lesser ones I either shoot it out from my ship on a straffing run or I hear you can do a bombing run with mine launchers from our ship.

Someone did map the bases and put them in a googledoc sheet or so. It should be somewhere in the Horizons section. Go in fast and surgical or go the long route with SRV (only do it for the atmo sometimes).

Thanks for responding. maybe cause it's so dark but I just don't recognise the generator in the base above.

Your suggestion of carpet bombing with mines did cross my mind, I haven't tried that approach yet....I'd prefer to be a bit more surgical in my strike if I can.

Torpedoes not also work? I haven't tried one yet, mainly due to threads like this. Lol

Seems, to me, that there's really only a couple of ways to approach these missions, especially when they're in a fortified base:-

1) Overkill.
Take a heavily armed ship, land, shoot at something, jump back in your ship, kill any hostile ships (and heavy skimmers), land again, pick off any turrets and remaining skimmers and then make your way to the objective unopposed - and with a substantial bounty as a result of your actions.

2) Suicide.
Take a Sidey', land, trundle toward the objective and hope you don't get attacked, complete the objective and then flee. If you get destroyed the rebuy will probably be much lower than the mission reward and you won't have to waste time flying back to collect your reward.


There are things you can do to improve your chances, such as disabling security grids and shutting down skimmer control nodes but, in general, sooner or later you're probably going to get noticed and then you're going to get attacked by nearby ships.

Maybe I've just not noticed before, but after spending some time around one the other day these places have some huge anti-ship turrets on them.

Haven't done this for a very long time, but bombing runs can knock the whole base out, not sure if they nerfed this mechanic, they normally do if the players find a way to deal with it in other ways than they imagined :D

I just did one of these, in a particularly high security base.
Tried bombing runs - nope.
Tried carpet bombing mines - nope.
then I sent in a spy ship, silent running at 1km up, & taking screenshots from external view.
that kind of worked, but I still couldn't find the generator in question.
then I sent in a spy-buggy, & voila, it located the mission target, from outside the perimeter.
It was actually a small distance outside the main base.
Back to the ship, one missile, boom, & run like hell.

It's completely stupid that they nerfed the ability to strike bases from the air. If it was too easy to pop a power plant and leave, they should have just made more than one power plant and give bases a larger wing of defense ships. Still, thanks for posting one technique, I'll try it.

Been a while since I've done a kill generator mission, and I usually do these from air. I've used 2 dumbfire racks on a FDS and FAS for these missions, but FDev ramped up defense systems so that now you pretty much have to use brute force with at least 4 dumbfire racks and hope 1 missile gets through in some cases.

Plasma is the next option and what i've used instead of dumbfires, it has splash damage so your aim doesn't have to be perfect. Tricky part is figuring out where the generator is and line up for the shot.

Just occurred to me...

If FDev need ideas for new modules, how about some kind of "target acquisition module" to help with missions like this?

"Ground Attack" is one of those things where you can spend quite a bit of time building a specialised ship for the role and a module that allowed you to target things like skimmers, turrets and generators would be quite handy.
It's not the sort of thing that could be used for much else so there wouldn't be much scope for abusing it but it would allow people to build better ground-attack ships.

I like it difficult & dangerous, and that it forces you to think about how to approach a mission.
Just turning up, throwing a couple of missiles & flying off might be nice for credits, but ultimately it would get pretty boring, pretty quick.
I do think we should be able to try & sneak in in an SRV, rather than automatically triggering 'intruder alert'.
SRV silent running maybe? :D
or it's only triggered if you are actually 'seen' by those skimmer lazer scanners, and/or 'lazer tripwires'

On large installations I do a slowish flyby and locate the generator, then land somewhere the base can't see me, but as close as possible (usually in my Python or Anaconda), and with a good line to the generator.

Then hop in the SRV, and come to the edge of the trespass zone (if there is one), and use the camera to scout again for the generator.

Then if I need to enter the trespass zone, i belt in like a mad man and blow the generator up, and attempt to make it back to the ship. Surviving is a bonus. Lol

If there isn't a trespass zone, I just casually drive around until I find it.

This +++ one I was doing had three generators, the red thingies. I've destroyed them from 100m height with my FAS, still no Mission accomplished message…

I've done them in my SRV, where I start by sticking to the outskirts and taking out the defenses and the work my way in. Usually have to hide from security ships and lots of synths to repair the buggy.

These days I fly to within 10km, hop into the SLF and order the mothership to hold position. I then fly in low, take some shots and then boost straight up and out about 2km and repeat if needed. Takes no more than two passes, and if I screw up and draw a crowd, I just switch back to mothership and leave or take out enemies as needed.

The only thing is that you can't select targets on the ground, but the SLF is so fast that I can usually just come to a complete stop, take out the target and get away without taking any damage.

I usually do the recon section in an SLF. I've found the plasma works well again at ground targets and generators. The last ++ one I completed was on the dark side like yours OP so I had to use my Keelback with the lights on just to figure out where stuff was. During the tricky "exit the zone before you become wanted" manoeuvre I spotted the correct generator and accidentally boosted into it.

Can confirm a Keelback is an effective way to knock the power out.

So… in these +++ ones, there are like, 4 generators… how do I spot the right one, without having to use an SRV?
