Powerplay Beta 1.3 live, lets test if it improves performance for VR!

Weird, looks like that search ID is personalized.

Anyway, FD is aware and are looking into these issues:

Bad/Bugs:
1) The 'controls' sub-menu reverts to the old flat screen and is just as difficult to read as before.
2) Side panel legibility is very poor now. It seems incredibly blurry. I switched AA off but it was still just as bad.
3) Galaxy Map Powerplay zones of control only display in one eye.
4) Galaxy Map now shows stalks from planets to the grid plane and blue dots at the base of the stalks. With route planning toggled on the whole map is just a mess of blue lines.
5) There was an unavailable Bulletin Board mission that said I needed to be at least 'friendly' with that local faction, which I was.
6) No reset orientation for the Rift. The default was unpleasantly close to the station menus.

You rift guys need to check these and post them in the bug forum too since op isn't going to.

Not had chance to download this and test. Could anyone affected by the "ships in system = judder" issue report as to whether 1.3 has made this better?

Performance is greatly increased for me. Still some judder here and there but overall stellar performance with headtracking on my rig. My first time in a really judder free RES, could get used to it!

Visuals have improved too, fog and color palette at RES seems much nicer also there seems less popping up details at stations. Pretty solid, now don't mess it up again frontier! ;)

Oculus centering button works in sc for me.

Sigh. You have beta access and whilst it's a pain in the ass it's kind of the point of beta testing.

Looking at the track record of FD on VR I wouldn't count on them seeing one post in one thread in the VR forum.

To be fair, these are not obscure or difficult to reproduce issues. Simply wearing a Rift and playing 1.3 for a few minutes is enough to expose the lot.

If they can't be bothered to do that then why should I be pointing them out?
If they can be bothered then they are already aware of them and likely working on fixes.

For something that is a showcase for Elite Dangerous and something they have used to sell the game at both the premier event and other gaming events around the world it is surprising that so much disregard for the technology seems apparent. Every time a new update comes out whether it be beta or not somehow seriously messes up the DK2 support. Is there not someone in Frontier who is responsible for the ongoing support, testing and development of VR?! If not a team of people!?! Surely this is supposed to be the future isn't it?!

I'm seriously getting tired of beta testing. Its hard enough when stuff doesn't work at release and I'm certainly not gonna test this device if we are seemingly treated like second class citizens and left to bark loudly at every release to get something fixed that should have been tested before it got compiled for beta.

Part of this rant and my frustration is driven by both the lack of communication from anyone at Frontier regarding VR and its future and the silly little mistakes and problems that come with every update. A little interaction in this forum wouldn't be too much to ask once in a while. What ever happened to the Direct Mode problems? How long does it take? Is it not fixable? Is it still potentially gonna be a thing? Should we give up wanting and wait for the CV1? Should I buy a CV1? Are you going to support the HTC Vive? So many questions!!!

I am currently getting a massive downgrade in visuals (DK1 quality). The Powerplay map doesn't seem to render in both eyes and I can't recenter my view. IMO three basic things that for some bizarre reason didn't get flagged up by anyone before release to beta.

I don't mind being a tester for the DK2 nor would I mind beta testing it with this game and giving my feedback. But its a two way street and there is seemingly little feedback from Frontier to give us some encouragement regarding what we can expect from future development of VR in Elite Dangerous. The impression seems to be that little priority is currently being given to VR. I find this a bit surprising considering at launch the user base was 10% and that coupled with the fact the CV1 is around the corner and VR is being touted as the future of gaming!

Maybe I am reading too much into these silly problems and it was an honest oversight. I am tired and frustrated. Come on Frontier.. what gives?

Rant over.

Overall, my DK2 experience with 1.3 is very similar in appearance and performance to the current release. Which is Good overall.
Maybe there's a little better performance in RES and stations, but its small if it is indeed there.
.
I too am experiencing the few issues highlighted in earlier posts:
1. Lack of OR reset (unless in supercruise)
2. Only one eye shows the Galactic Powers map properly.
3. Mouse cursor doesn't move.
.
Overall, I am at least pleased that the VR performance hasn't taken a step backwards.
.
PS: Don't forget to put SweetFX into the Open Beta Folder.

I do not have access to the beta, someone know if the frame rate drop (75 FPS to 55 FPS for me) in RES after 1-2 min is fixed???
It was related to NPC spawning, netcode or something else (in tutorial I get a solid 75 FPS).
It's really important for me ! I can't play in RES because of this. If the problem is always here please someone post a thread in the beta bug section.
If it's not done now, I'm sure we will need to wait 1.4 to get this fixed! FD is focused on bug tracking now, it's the best time to inform them of all the VR related bugs!
Also, that will be nice to inform them again about the 0.6 sdk compatibility in the beta bug section. Just to be sure. It seem a waste of time to debug on the old SDK rather than the rift 0.6 SDK.
Thanks!!

I intend to install powerplay today and will test it this evening. I suspect someone will come back before that though.

I have to say that I'm a bit dissapointed that some people appear to be throwing toys out of the pram over the state of beta. It's as if they think beta means 'early preview'. Beta is your chance to test the code in exchange for feeding back on faults via the correct routes. If they choose to ignore these issue and go on to release the game with faults ... then you have a right to drop your rattle and scream.

it's a beta

of an unreleased patch

that you're playing on an unreleased developer kit vr headset

calm yourselves geez

I sure hope FD decides to try 1.3 on a DK2 at some point. Would have been nice if they had before releasing the 1.3 beta though.

DK2-=back of the bus.

... I am now able to pump up my rift to high settings with no framerate loss. ...

Do you mind saying what your system specs are? I haven't gotten a chance to try 1.3 yet, but I have a single evga gtx 970 sc and I haven't been able to play without judder on minimum and I want to figure out what other people are using for E:D + OR hardware-wise.

Extensive tests: 2 hours of game
Using DSR or downscaling i can't see any big differences between 1.3 and 1.2
But using in game SS give a very low image quality for 1.3 VS 1.2 with same settings. So for now use DSR or downscaling.
On the + side, game seems to run great with shadows on highest settings! (open/stations/RES)
On the - side, in RES still got tiny micro judder when ships spawn

Awesome side: imperial courier cockpit in VR is glorious!

Guy's, no offence but this is beta, log a ticket if you find issues, complain if nothing is resolved at release.

Some issues don't lend themselves to a bug report. There really isn't a category for "you're using a deprecated rendering mode that's holding back performance, and saying the problem is on Oculus' side, but haven't integrated their updated SDKs."

That has nothing to do with the 1.3 patch.
