Practically chasing people away from the game

Well the title says it all.

I purchased the game for about $100 AUD, before it was released, so I could support the game and gain early access for what I have been anticipating since I stopped playing with my c64.

I also recommended the game to a number of friends, (people in my 'clan'), as we were looking for something new to play as a group, co-operatively and occasionally as adversaries, as we have done over the last 15 or so years.

As most of my friends could not gain access until the main release, I played with just one or two others with Early Access. I put up with the many resets that can be expected from a game in development, no problem with that. The move to online-only DRM was expected, but was a pity to see so many people being 'hood-winked'. I also put up with deteriorating quality of the community, the griefers, the forum heroes, the haters, and of course the care-bears as they are so affectionately called by this community.

Then I crashed my ship and lost lots of money. Yep, just like many others, all that hard work lost in an instant. I had read the many other threads from so many others, and always agreed that you need the insurance to pay for what you fly.. And I had the insurance, but after the crash it left me almost penniless in the scheme of things, and I lost many weeks of farming/grinding.

So it was time to put it down for a while, and I did, and played something else. My friends were a little baffled that I had stopped playing a game that I was raving about for ages. I had to admit that a terrible crash (which was my fault) had wiped weeks or months of farming, and I was essentially back to square one. Big deal huh?

So I thought I would have another look at it. But upon return I noticed a lot of changes. Firstly, the Mobious group had become infected by griefers that had a work-around from getting banned by conducting non-consensual pvp. (pvp goons you can stop reading here and blurt out the usual rubbish, and go read another thread). Secondly I noticed that an upcoming idea is about to be implemented; 'reputation' or 'alliance' will now decay, and all the work I had done will also be lost, putting me back to square one in that regard.

So here's the rub :
- Your 'punitive' game design regarding money/insurance/crashing (or being griefed) has wiped months of playing.
- Your 'punitive' game design regarding reputation decay will also wiped months of playing.
- Your gaps or omissions in coding and have allowed griefers to run rampant, in everywhere but solo play.
- Your control of the haters in the forums has made it a 'not very nice place' to read of an evening, full of vitriol and scorn, trolling and sarcasm.

But I get it, you are trying to exclude all players except for the 'Elite' who have hours to burn on this one game (and possibly not much real life 'work') and plenty of hatred to spread in forums and in-game.

Its ok I get the point, you want to make it "hard" for people to play this game. But not in the traditional sense of writing a game that is enjoyable but challenging, but more in a sense of making it difficult to get anywhere unless you have many hours to spend grinding away with most of the 'storyline' just being a figure of your imagination, and thick skin to deal with the monotonous loop of hater fanboys.

Stuff that. I have taken my experiences, your game mechanics, and some shining examples of the trolls that this community holds high, and explained them in great detail to my friends, clanmates, facebooks friends, steam reviews, and other usergroups I attend regularly. The result isnt very spectacular, but it is effective :

I definately stopped 9 people in my clan buying the game, based on my experiences. ( $900 AUD )
I only have 74 FB friends, only half of them are gamers, and only half of them would be into a space game, so lets say only 15 people heeded the message ( $1500 )
My steam review isnt trending, there are many other negative reviews so mine ust got lost in the roar, so not sure how effective this was, but just added a little more weight to the 'dont buy this game' argument.
I have also put you in the 'EA Games Category of unscrupulous or bad game companies' from which I will never buy another game from ever, and will sully your name and reputation for the rest of my life. No big deal, EA still has plenty of cash despite being universally hated, and FD does too.

So basically I have only 'cost' you $2400 in lost revenue, and possibly a little more, but that is hard to identify.

Big deal, who cares, you've got plenty of fanboys who love you and will troll me in your defence. Its ok, I already knew that. (see their troll comments below)

So I'm done, yes, this is another 'stuff this game im out' thread.

To the 10-15 people on this forum who were civil, nice, welcoming, had integrity and some self respect; thanks, but the game just isnt good enough, and the community is full of really bad people.

(Its ok I wont let the door hit my butt on the way out, its been torn off its hinges with the exiting traffic anyway)

My prediction is the game will be dead within 2 years, could be 3, not sure, but there are so many other well made games, full of content and challenges that your already struggling to compete with.

TLDR : Game is bad, community is worse, catchya later.

Thanks, but no thanks.

This strip never stops being relevant:

I played the game during the premium beta and loved it. However as I travelled from system to system buying and selling stuff and gradually moving further and further away from other players (until all I could see was NPC's) I got bored. On top of this all of the friends I met during the beta phase had vanished and I found that I was playing the game all alone and not really having an aim. So I quit.

I reset my save a few weeks ago, bought a Hauler and travelled to the Sol system, with the aim being this time to stay around Sol and the neighbouring systems doing BBS missions for rep and a little bit of trading, and I'm loving it. Even managed to make friends with some other players.

The game is a lot more fun with a goal and some players around. Sure, you have to keep an eye out to make sure you're not going to be attacked by someone, but I think this adds to the danger and makes it more interesting.

Don't get this at all

Ive in the past spent a couple of weeks building up a great trading ship and then "had an accident" and ended up with a replacement and a little money - thing is having that great trading ship it doesn't take long to get it back to where it was before,

I did the same when I had just finished kitting out my shiny new ASP. Hopping from one system to a high tech one nearby and I boosted into the side of the station, doh! The things I called myself would make you blush, however, I got straight back in the saddle.

I saw it as a challenge. I wondered how long it would take me, knowing what I knew about the most profitable routes etc. to get back up to the same ship. Off I went in my very shiny new Hauler and it took me a week. I really enjoyed the self imposed challenge and with regards to the original loss, I had no one to blame but myself.

I find it interesting that the OP blames the game for his fault and the behaviour of other players.

The solution must be to simple to get it. Fly always with insurence and if you dont like other players, play solo or group ( you play with griefers in a private group ? Cool story ).

If you had friends here, they could helped you coming back fast. Takes not that much time. I also wonder what kind of ship you had.
With a fighter you can get credits fast. Multipupose i always like fighting, mining, scanning. Something where free money is in. Even rare wares stuff isnt that expensive and haul a lot money.
Trading ship only ? Really no backupships for fighting or rare runs ?

Mate im sorry all the stuff you complain about is just silly and have no valid point.

Why? It's no different to every other rage-quit, except that he's tried to emphasise how important he is by listing all the ways he's stopped FD making money. That's a new twist, I have to say.

Its a shame really, but this is nothing new, when I played EvE Online, every change would be met by chorus' of these kinds of posts. Now my own experience with this was that EvE did move away from being lots of fun as a solo player and moved to requiring small to large groups to do the more and more fun stuff. As an old player, id more or less grown out of the game, and didnt have time to play it. They thus lost my subscription, but I had a great time playing it and wouldn't do the childish thing of assuming the people around me wouldn't enjoy it or be able to dedicate more time than me.

Off topic? Well not really, Elite is very fresh so far and has a long way to go in terms of detail and content, but throwing in the towel right now seems premature and short sighted. It relates to my EvE statement in that in EvE i was well and truly end game, and if i was to re-sub, i would still be very end game. One thing iv never understood in this age of gaming is the lust for endgame, and in some way that unless the game is easy, it is bad. I just don't get it. I spent a long time saying that Console gaming had done this to the community, taken the life out of gaming by making everything so easy that it barely should be called gaming and should just be called story books. When I read / hear that back in the day people could end game WoW characters in about 2 days, it just makes me kind of sad really that the same thing is being applied to this gaming experience.

To summerise my thoughts on these general "I quit" posts and how i see the statements made

- Im an old boy of Elite!
Here you want to make it sound like you know what you are talking about or that it gives you extra power behind your opinion... sorry old boy, as an old boy myself, it doesn't ;)

- I love realism - BUT
BUT - you dont want realism face it and admit it, dont say you love it and then basically explain that you hate it. Get a grip, and get over it.

- The game did X
The reality is that other than some extremely rare bugs, YOU did X and you are annoyed at the game for something that you did... again... get over it and get over yourself.

- FEII and FFE had loads of features that ED doesn't have, OMG ED is so unfinished!
ED already surpasses those games in many respects, anyone who has these statements and believes them, I honestly dont believe actually played those games. Other than Planetary landings and some fairly minor aspects of the mission system, and a few more ships, this point is just not relevant in my opinion.

- The game is unfinished and buggy
There are games that are apparently finished, that iv witnessed 1000 times more bugs that people worship like some kind of gift from the divines... brand loyalty and confirmation bias anyone? As for unfinished, it is no hidden thing that FDev are to be updating and upgrading the game as they go.

- I spent X dollars on this game
You bought a product, no one MADE you buy it, no one came over to you, grabbed your credit card from your wallet, filled out the registration form, and entered the number. You looked at the information given, looked at what was on offer and decided to back the project for better or worse. Get over yourself, this doesn't mean the Development team have to develop the game in the way you want it personally. You are not that important, again, in this age of internet you are invited to believe you are a god... sorry to inform you... you are just some guy/gal among thousands of others, much like the realism of the game, realize that your opinion does not NEED to be followed, nor do people have to adhere to your ideas or ideals.

- The developer doesn't know what its doing
Clearly you haven't followed the games development, and as someone who has, you must be visually or objectively impaired not to see how amazing progress has been, we got a game, and then a short period of time later, a mac release as promised. Each change log is longer than your arm and yet people keep aqusing the team of not doing anything or caring about things... it just makes no logical sense to me. Clearly you know better? Clearly you own a software development company and are already bringing in the millions. Oh wait, no, typically thats not the case.

Anyway, these are my opinions, and i wont be too upset, or upset at all if anyone doesn't read or agree with it but what it does is illustrate the general 'HUH' feeling i get when i see these kinds of posts.
