Predicting how the different powers will react when the Thargoids arrive

Why are we all so sure the first alien species we meet will be Thargoids?

That large barnacles seem more likely to make an appearance first (the commodities market description hints at sentience, imo, and gives them just cause to be somewhat unfriendly towards us as we have been killing them and slicing their shells up for our own purposes.)

There are several extensive permit regions around the galaxy as well.

FD only get to introduce the Thargoids once. They have to do it right, and I don't think it will be so soon into the game game.
Yeah, especially considering DB's reaction to the sentient life inside the bubble question...

They will have all this reaction

Just to have some fun, I decided to make some predictions about how the Powers would react to the arrival of the Thargoids. Feel free to add your own!

Zachary Hudson: Donald Trump: "Kill the Alien Invaders! And the Imperial Slavers! Exterminate the Imperial Alien slaver invaders!!"

Felicia Winters: Welcome them into the great Federation and put them at work in charities.

Arissa Lavigny-Duval: Hillary C: "Bow down before me, Alien subjects, and bask in my glory!"

Aisling Duval: "Send them Pamphlets! Pamphlets always work!"

Denton Patreus: Bush: Send in the warships and force them into Imperial Slavery.

Zemina Torval: "Find out how much they'll pay for slaves."

Edmund Mahon: "Secure Trade agreements and make sure we stay on their good side."

Li Yong Rui: "Reverse-engineer their technology to use it ourselves, then sell it with a 15 percent discount For those who buy it directly from SiriusGov!"

Pranav Antal:"Peace and Utopia shall bond us to our Alien friends! Blblblblblblbl Aah!"

Archon Delaine:"Shoot first, steal their Alien cargo after."

LOL could not resist :D

Considering the Thargoids are way more technically advanced than us, they will be able to subdue us without much difficultly should that be what they wish to do. FD will have something rather more sophisticated up their collective sleeves than the old 'alien killing machines go on rampage' trope.

With regards to Powerplay. The skirmishing and waste of resources going on under the crazed leadership of these various fanatics will have to come to a head... someone will emerge, or perhaps leaders of the three main factions will appear - they will have to lead for humanity.

Keep watching for subtle clues.

Agree, why do we always need to kill and destroy what we don't understand?

I guess history will have to repeat itself...Time to start working on providing some safety to the Thargoids from the warmongers in the Federation and the Empire again.

I'm guessing the first significant action of the inevitable Thargoid war will be the destruction of a station, which. Far as I know has not occurred yet in ED. I'm guessing too that all the ships then docked in said station will be destroyed and I'm wondering... Has anyone checked the exclusions on their insurance policies...? #unsettling ;-)

Just a few players suddenly, out of the blue, finding themselves in an interdiction-style struggle, whilst in a hyperspace jump, would let community gossip do the work. Could be tentative feelers first, where the attempt is deliberately aborted just short of pulling you through. :7

Since it's the human species, I predict that their reaction towards an impending invasion of overpowered strange forces will be very similar to that of the seven kingdoms in Game of Thrones.

They will fight each other until they are too weakened to withstand an alien threat from outer space. This is the most realistic course the story could take.

Could be true. Perhaps a bit obvious though. ;)

I really really hope that the Thargoids are not just going to be another excuse for 'pew pew'. They've been around for millennia, they could teach us a thing or two about the galaxy.

Why do so many assume that there's going to be a 'war' and they're 'a threat'? The Thargoids could crush humanity as easily as we bulldoze a termite mound. If they really intend to be hostile it will be game over Commander.

I predict something far more interesting and subtle.

Perhaps we will have to prove ourselves worthy of joining some pan-galactic organisation of enlightened cultures and we've currently been catalogued as 'too primitive' to take part.

Perhaps the Thargoids will be a culture we can look up to and aspire to be like, a fourth alternative to the Alliance, Federation and Empire. Why be speciest?

Perhaps there will be an inter-nicene war within the Thargoid culture and we could intervene on one side or the other, unlocking their history as we progress.

Perhaps the Thargoids will be utterly indifferent to us. Given their physiology, they have no need of our habitable planets and vice versa. Perhaps we can co-exist peaceably. They probably have some kind of 'hive mind', so not understand concepts of 'territory' and 'individual ownership' in the same manner we do.

Perhaps there is a bigger narrative in the galaxy that the Thargoids will help us unravel.

So, please, for Randomius' sake, if you see one, DO NOT JUST SHOOT AT IT. ;)

Cheers,

Drew.

You mean I should try ramming it with 4 pips to shields? Excellent suggestion. I will make a note of it in my log.

And to align with the rather wacky game mechanics for ranking, for this esteemed suggestion, you're promoted to 'AMBASSADOR'. ;)

Cheers,

Drew.

Having read none of the lore regarding anything to do with any game ever, let alone Elite. I would love it if the 'Thargoids' were hostile from the beginning, for whatever reason. Kind of like Freespace.
And they should be almost invincible, and use technology that's completely different and vastly superior to ours.
They also should get a new name cos 'Thargoids' just sounds like a nasty disease you've picked up. Lol

Most of the CGs should become war oriented, the first could be recon and gather intelligence to find the next attack, then fight off a certain number to prevent the fall of a system. Then you have salvage of Thargoid ship wrecks for research. Finally would be counter attacks on Thargoid systems.

Also we would need an AI overhaul cos 100s of Thargoids doing kebab rolls would not be threatening. Lol
They should get their own distinct AI. So they fight and fly like nothing we're used too. Swarm logic or hive oriented would be good. But with a hierarchy still, and still lethal when alone, but weakend.
Fighters slaved to Conda sized ships, which in turn are slaved or capital sized ships and so on. Maybe have the ability to shield share when in groups.

TL:DR
They need to feel Alien, and be extremely deadly and relentless, and like nothing we're used too. Or its just gonna be CZs with different ships.
And for a rough idea of how strong a single Conda sized ship should be?
5000+mj shields. All huge hardoints (at least 8). Turrets and missiles that can't be spoofed by current counter measures (CG for research!), And initially, you can't target subsystems cos you have no idea where they are or how anything works, until you've researched enough salvage.

No thanks! Peace with the Aliens! Blblblbl Aah!

I like to think that by 3301 we will have evolved past that, or at least our Utopian Overseers will have. Anyway, if you meet a Thargoid and it deploys it's hardpoints, don't shoot! We don't want a second Earth-Minbari war...

I never shoot first unless they're wanted :D

What if Thargoids don't have hardoints? But can just fire from any surface on their ships.
Not only would that be very cool, but also very different.

I'd like to think by 3301 we'd have got past that, but judging by how many systems are in a state of war in ED, and the amount of piracy. I think things actually got worse. Lol
If anything, the Thargoids may think we're not worthy of existence anymore. No-stop war for our entire history? Would you expect anything less of us if you were an alien?

Are we expecting them anytime soon do you think? The suspense is making me a bit itchy. Or is that something else?

I saw a reference to the Generation ships somewhere, pre FSD Earth explorers in huge ships travelling at sub light speed.
We will probably encounter them first and they might still be using AI. Which will have evolved and proves impossible to combat (See that Galactica programme for details!) leaving us with no choice but to seek help from the Space Roaches.

Who agree to help but only if we can hit Tier 7 on the soon to be announced Karsuki Ti Locust CG!

Maybe.

Well, after INRA's shenanigans in the past, they're bound to at least be somewhat wary. :7

I, for one, am thrilled about the prospect of one day earning enough trust to be allowed to land in an active Thargoid facility (...other than to host larvae ;P), and check out the local market and bulletin board :9 -- an actual T-goid facility, that is, as opposed to, say, a Thargoid-owned, mostly human-crewed, Coriolis station, set up for interspecies relations.

If there are multiple factions (separate hives?) among them (might one count the Oresians, perhaps, or would that be unpleasantly "you-*slurs*-all-look-the-same-to-me"-y..?), I do wonder which one of these it may be that decides the time has come to approach humanity again (EDIT: Assuming it does not turn out it is we who come to them), and why, and how the others, who may also end up affected, react.
A wide range of possibilites occurs, to a rambling mind. :7
