News Premium Beta access update

Just wanted to add that I'm still very annoyed about a further addition of "pay to win" to Elite Dangerous and another preferential treatment of alpha players who shell out 335.82 US Dollar and get the "premium beta" TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE of those who purchased the premium beta!!! ON AN ALREADY DELAYED GAME!

Two weeks, where are you getting this from? It's two hours or there abouts Michael has said.

*Edit* Just been pointed out to me the strange DB quote (apologies I can't read!), this seems to be going back on what was said before. Doesn't seem fair to the Beta commanders.

It's the 1.02 alpha build. Stable as hell with the AMD fix.

It's not a WIP, they are just sorting out the download stuff, it needs to be a separate project that the launcher can distinguish from 3.04 so that it can query the API to see if you've purchased it or not. I expect all that stuff is what's being sorted.
Ok, so not quite available yet yeah? Bit odd to be able to download a launcher that doesn't launch anything but never mind, just happy to be able to zip around in a Sidewinder soon :)

OP of this thread...

Some words from Frontier CEO, David Braben looking at the progress so far and the move to Beta :

“I want to take this opportunity to thank all those who have played such an important role in Alpha testing, and I’m very happy that we will continue to benefit from their valuable input as they test Beta builds approximately 2 weeks in advance of release.
On the 30th of May we move into a new phase of Premium Beta testing with an increasingly complete game, and I’m delighted to be able to welcome a significant numbers of new players to Elite: Dangerous today.”

So premium beta backers now get the premium beta builds 2 weeks after alpha backers?

While it's welcome to have a single player build (or in fact anything) to 'practice with', it's not beta testing, and I thought it was going to be a 'matter of hours'.

By the way, I've just downloaded the launcher (02.820.0) from the store. It immediately tells me '02.881.0 required, see news'.

'News' in the launcher was last updated on the 1st April, mentioning Alpha 3.4.

Where do we get the updated launcher?

Oh blimey, it's me that needs to learn to read. Doh!

That's contradicting the firefighting Michael put a lot of effort into calming down before isn't it?

Surely that's a mistake. I don't want that as an Alpha, that's totally devaluing the Beta peoples contribution.

Sure does look like so.

I hope DB's estimate is of worst-case scenario and MB's estimate is of best-case scenario, the truth lying somewhere in between. Again, hopefully most of the time much nearer the best-case scenario.

The two week exclusivity period seems to contradict this

"The decision to provide beta builds to the alpha testers first is purely a dev one to give the build a quick run through before it goes out to the wider group. There'll be more details soon, but beta covers a few phases, the early stages can only be accessed by the premium beta backers and normal beta covers the later phases.

Michael"

We've already been around the houses on this issue so I'm not getting back into it but the mixed messages are a bit odd no?

It needs clearing up for both Alpha and Beta peoples sakes. Hopefully someone will come and clear it up for us.

Beta shouldn't be made to feel so 2nd class like that.

Alpha's can't take any more hate :)

Everyone complains that Beta is late, say that releasing single-player combat would be a good in the interim. When Frontier do it, there are complaints.

I suspect the 2-week period where Alphas get the Beta will mostly be spent waiting for Frontier to fix the obvious game-breaking bugs so that the Betas don't have to deal with them. It makes absolute sense to do it this way, with a good buffer for the first release at least.

I've never hated Alpha backers for being Alpha backers. They earn my hate for purely individual reasons :)

What happens if there are no game breaking bugs and the beta build is good for releasing to Beta backers. Will they get it or will FD wait till the exclusivity period ends? Former would mean that it's true that the exclusivity period is just a sanity check, the latter would mean that FD just used Beta backer's pledge reward as a method of flogging more Alpha packages.

I've no issue with the former, think the latter is a bit shady.

Premium Beta Backer here and ...

I've got exactly the same. I'm hoping it's just a delay and that the News section will be updated soon.

Yeah, same, and the top news links that do exist in the launcher actually don't seem to link to a news story as far as I can tell. They all point to the store homepage.

Feels like someone botched the release :)

Is that galaxy from the game and PG generated? If so.....

No, it's concept art used to generate the initial mass distribution.

Does this mean alpha backers get premium beta mid may?

There hasn't been a date set yet for Beta for Alpha players, first comes Alpha phase 4. Stay tuned for more.
