Private servers killed open play

There are no player heat maps however each system issues a traffic report daily which indicates the number of player ships entering the system.

But even then that traffic report can just be player passing through the system without actual activity within the system no?

Open often can be very lonely, but this isn't only due to playerchoices, but also due to instancing. Just yesterday I passed by Maia in open, gave a hail out to local to see in anyone was there, but no response whatsoever.

In an ideal world I would've liked to see ED behave as was the case in POTBS (an older MMO RP set in the Caribean during the age of pirates). you logged in and you were in an environment full of other players, no instancing, just everyone there in the same environment. Sure it often got crowded around the marketstand, but you could interact with all players at all times. PVP in this game was managed differently in that a player couldn't just attack another player, unless they both were in a "contested zone". These zones were created by the players themselves by bringing a port in contention, thus creating a pvp zone and ultimately leading to large fleet battles. Winner of the battle took the port for its faction in game. ultimately this was akin to PP in ED, but with players being more actively engaged in it and stimulating groupplay.

Don't take it wrong, POTBS was far from perfect, just as any other game. ED for me is still one of the best games I've ever played and the game I enjoy most at this time. I'm a backer since GPP and my affection for ED has only grown since then. But the way player interactions are managed in ED are imo the weakest point. All of us have had one or other experience with other players in open which left us feeling frustrated or angry. The playerbase isn't all like that. I loved the time over at the alien wreck where lots of players came together for science, sightseeing or just plain tomfoolery. I like meeting fellow tinfoilhatters in Maia or Merope, only thing is, sometimes you get in the same instance and sometimes you don't while playing open. This limits the ability to create impromptu groups or even just meeting other cmdr's out there and having some friendly banter with them. If there is one aspect of the game that I'd like to have reworked it is this element.

The point is that it was mentioned as part of a brainstorming post regarding Powerplay - and very quickly pointed out to be inconsistent with Frontier's stated position that all game modes are equal and valid, that they have no plans to incentivise any game mode and they are aware that not all players agree with that stance.
One word "Wings"

I've benefitted loads from open play due to plenty of helpful commanders out there. Been taken out plenty of times from an npc but never seen one or a group of these griefers yet. Just managed to get to competent in my A graded, engineered FDL so hopefully I would be more of a handful now anyway. If these griefers got huge bounties put on them with locations it would be a big incentive for commanders to wing up to collect.

More people would play open then surely.

PVE players need to stop shouting "griefer" every time a CMDR takes them out. Open is dangerous, you're gonna meet alot of different people; some of whom want to pirate you or kill you for lots of different reasons.

Yeah, but that's basically every combat experience I've had with another player. The other night I was in a non-CG system, with no cargo, no PP allegiance, and no bounty. And I had the same combat "Expert" in a Corvette come after me multiple times. He even combat logged the first time around, and then low-waked out the second. If I hadn't have been visiting in my FDL I wouldn't have had as easy a time with the situation.

The only noteworthy thing in the entire system was an engineer's base.

Maybe you need to stop shouting "They aren't griefers, they're some other thing trying to ruin your experience!"

One thing they need to force is OPEN play for powerplay. It's rubbish being undermined by people you can't do anything about!

Some poor decision making with some aspects of the game, in my opinion.

I've never played in anything but open. I'm not a very good combat player by any means and have experienced a range of player interactions which have added to my game experience, some positive, some negative, but all have contributed to my overall space experience. Some have cost me dear in regard to completely unwarranted destruction but fuel rat interaction, a combat ship that wasted me but flew in front, had a look and disappeared, the wee responses I've had on occasion just saying hi, have all contributed to a wonderful gaming experience.

Cant imagine not playing in open.

Yeah I thought open was dieing and that only greefurs play in open.

What happened?

nononono. There are griefers in open too. You can help yourself to find them just by contributing in community goals or trying long smuggling missions. But if you keep 10 LY out of those Hot Spot areas
you are quite safe. There isn't any difference to Group or Solo then.

simple math: if you have a 24h ship traffic of 240 there are 10 ships of players per hour or one every 6 minutes. You need 4 digit ship transit values in a system to get player interaction more often. And believe me,
95% are not griefers and no gankers at all.

Miklos

Right, like I have mentioned, I play open and I almost never even see other human pilots. Just pick a direction and start stacking deliveries in that direction for a week or two.

Personally, I'm glad there's an option to play with others in an indirect way. I like feeling that there are other commanders out there, and I'm glad or interaction isn't just us trading laser fire, of which I have no interest in.

Basically, PvP isn't just shooting at each other.

I'd suggest looking into Mobius. They're a PvE only group.

Thanks - my friends are keeping me company now in Private Groups as we all learn to play, but I will check Mobius out!

Kind of reminds me of the motorcycle scene. There is a lot of these idiots in boosted 200+hp hayabusa's riding around acting like king      but God forbid they have to take a turn with that thing. Probably not as bad in UK where they have licensing based in engine size. I'm much more impressed with driver/rider/pilot skill than equipment.

Open play is dead in the water.

Private servers lol great idea 👍

Now xbox live clubs...

Yes let's blame a common feature that exists in many games and not blame the reality of why people go to solo and private in the first place.

It only takes a few players to ruin the View of other players. This game is harsh when it comes to loss. And if a player who has no life and has a beefed up ship and another player, who can only put in a couple hours a day, is picked on by the no life player, killed etc chances are that player will go solo and or private, and will spread the word about his/her experience. We as a community are to blame for this outcome. Defend it as I know some of you will. Elite is not just about shooting other players, some enjoy the passive side of this game which is difficult when there are some who enjoy knowing their aggressive actions can cost hours of play time. Sadly some folks are so disturbed they get off on this type of behavior. So why I ask would you OP feel that anyone should be forced in the same room as these disturbed individuals.

I play in open just as much as private. But I am able to see the logic of this, it's to bad you do not.

I thought private servers were just for members of a group, or a clan; that have bought the server from the company for the purpose of training new recruits?

I have notice though, that open play is rather...

quiet.
