Indeed - the three game modes are simply different settings for the matchmaking system - Solo = do not match with other players; Private Group = match with players playing in that Private Group; Open = match with anyone playing in Open.
True, maybe it should be.
Private servers make open feel empty, though those can quickly sound like someone looking to kill people and not able to find any.
why don't they just go to a solarsystem and teach the player how to operate from the neutral system, instead of going to a private server that is basically like an entire new galaxy?
that just doesn't make sense, to make another galaxy to be in a private server for a few tips and tricks.
It's the exact same Galaxy - they just choose who they want to appear in their game.

In the rare event that all of my friends are online at the same time, we use the private group to ensure we're able to find each other. Other than that, it's pretty much open all the time.
And there's plenty of players in open still, just check the popular systems. I've been being a giant A-hole to everyone in Eravate for the past couple days, and I'm having fun with it. I sure wish these harmless fellas were a bit more friendly...

I'll be in Eravate for another few days probably, racking up an even bigger bounty. I've been interdicting new players and demanding friendship. Those that respond to my hails receive gifts, or advice. Those that do not get roughed up a bit. I'm not killing anyone, just preparing them for the future!
Drop by and say hi, folks. I've got a pair of Nanobreakers for the first CMDR from the forums to hit me with an o7 in the comms panel. Not exactly an ultra rare commodity, but I don't want to just dump them.

Remember, for some responding on an Xbox is hard. The onscreen keyboard is not conducive to quick reply's. I don't even have a microphone or headset on my Xbox. I am not entirely sure that I would notice someone hailing me; let alone be able to reply in a timely manner.
I've missed messages myself, I know it happens sometimes.
Still, every message I send is direct, and unless someone is in a menu, they should be able to see it. Especially if I ask if we are bros at least 3 times. I've even gone so far as providing instructions for the comms panel, post-interdiction.My messages are sent from the same on screen keyboard.
I'm convinced that they are deliberately hurting my feelings.
I appreciate the rare ones that do stop to say hi to the Dangerous, wanted Sidewinder(Eagle now) that is ripping them from supercruise. One fella in an Adder was bailing out, and was nice enough to give me a firsthand demonstration on how shock mines work. Pretty cool, I must say. He was charging his FSD, and I was like "NO WAIT! I HAVE GIFTS!"
I was surprised when they stopped, and drifted back over.

it should be restricted to the highest bidder... Allowing a bunch of players who just happen to know how to click buttons.... create a secret society so they can not be destoried by the naturally occurring threats facing the galaxy ( interdictions by players, who don't take no for an answer to slaughter you while your in their airspace, or traveling in it ) or ( computer NPCs chasing you down for entering into their airspace, or invading NPCs into yours ) these players take away from the experience. closed play should be limited, scheduled or reset. Multiplayer is meant for Multiple Players. if I am going 200 light years, I'd expect to experience and encounter at least one human player from each faction.

said it already and ill say it again, i been playing since gpp on xbox and always on open, met a few folks i didnt like but tbh 99% of cmdrs are friendly from my experience

This is my issue and a big reason why I tend to avoid unknown commanders. About the only response I can do in a timely manner is flashing my lights.

You also can't do anything about the players you can't instance with thanks to geography & platform.
Reality is that this is not a true MMO, and should never have been assumed to be so. FD said Solo would influence BGS from the start of KS.
So this isn't news.
That last line made coffee come out my nose.... Thanks for the laugh, gotta go get something to clean this mess up with.
This line of thinking will only hurt us Xbox players.
