∞ probes?

This thread is as directed by the OP about whether infinite probes are a good thing or not, and I'm happily informing the very small number of "no infinite probe" players the reasons why they are a good thing :)

Maybe FD should do a Petition, just like they did with ship/module transfers? :)

I prefer to think of the probes as energy packets rather than mass-objects.

Problem solved

(well assuming you are happy to live with the idea your powerplant can create an infinite number of them without consuming any extra fuel...)

They are doing everything to not upset people that will be exploring when the update hits the servers. I would prefer sythesizing probes just because it makes more sense (probes just can't be 100% energy) but I won't be bothered by this too much.
Every half brained pilot out ther should foresee the need of coming home to upgrade the ship after this update (like since a year ago). People just don't care, they know all the whining would make the devs to somehow implement all the changes without upseting the lords of the black - like infinite probes or not merging ads with dss modules.

Just watched the stream now, I like the probe mechanic. Looks interesting and fun, BUT.....

I know, I'm waiting for said whinger.

Okay, I'll be said whinger.

I don't like infinite probes. The 200 count we saw in the pic months ago was far too low, but I'd still like to see them be a finite resource which requires some degree of housekeeping to maintain. I like mechanics which in time require a new activity to support. Using synthesis to make more probes would eventually force a player to farm mats (either by mining rings or the SRV) to keep the probes flying, and I think that would be a value added aspect of the whole shebang.

But that's just me. I'm not super mad that they are infinite, I just feel like it's a missed opportunity to add more loops to our gameplay.

Those that explore without srv's or mining equipment cannot create probes, or those without Horizons (So can't synthesize or prospect; therefore first-mapped becomes Pay2Win).

Gameplay > immersion/grind/pay2win.

Infinite probes is the perfect solution.

Here is a better solution:

Give the standard DSS infinite probes, but it can only fire 3 at a time.

Then, implement engineer recipes for the DSS which can allow you to fire 4 or 5 at a time and also increase their flight speeds, BUT now the DSS can only hold a limited number of them. Say a couple thousand or so, after which you'd need to synthesize more using commonly found materials in both rings or planet surfaces. The bigger & better probes are much larger than the stock ones, so only so many can be stored at a time!

WALLA!!! Now we have a system which supports both non-Horizon players and Horizon players alike. Choices via engineering. If you want faster more numerous probes then you give up the unlimited ammo for them! :D

Or perhaps you meant attacking the president with mining probes??? :)

I thought letting it slide was a good thing... because I understood what he wrote because of context... but no... now I look as bad as the one I agreed with. :D

I wonder if mining probes will get the same buff, the precedent has been set now
Miners aren't expected to be 50k LY away from the nearest station, nor did FDev state that miners wouldn't need to return to the bubble to enjoy the new gameplay mechanics.

I'm going to repeat what I posted on another thread:

You know, before I played No Man's Sky, I might have [felt that infinite probes was a bad idea].

Now, I'm just going to assume my Commander is doing some asteroid mining to replenish her probe supply whenever I'm logged out. ;)

That game has instant transfer too ;)

Whatever we believe they should do.. they decided already and won't add more code to the game to fix it. So we are stuck with unlimited probes. I could see them using iron or something and injecting it with fuel and somehow printing it using materials on the fly at a very slow pace but personally I think it should consume SOMETHING ...

So far I've seen more support for Open Only Powerplay [haha]

Well, each proposal for open Powerplay was overwhelmingly in favour of it being open. In the end Obsidian's poll and counting the feedback yes/no was 75% in favour.

As far as infinite probes, it's a very gamey solution that is a bit silly. Even infinite ammo plasma slug comes from burning fuel, draw it from that.

Precisely my point: Open Only Powerplay had vastly more support (than non-infinite probes) yet didn't get an official poll, therefore there's obviously no need for a "yay or nay to infinite probes" poll ;)

Finally, a sensible idea - synthesise probes from fuel (aka infinite but with occasional maintenance)!
