∞ probes?

Well I have suggested you can summon one of your other ships, providing it's fitted with an SRV bay, fuel scoop, and you have a spare crew member. There would be a lengthy wait depending on where you are, so you'd have to keep you and your SRV alive.
Of course, if you die before your ship arrives, you respawn as usual, and your summoned ship turns around and heads back.

Or something.

That would actually be pretty cool, or if you could catch a ride with a FuelUberRat

Or..or... we have proper multicrew and you can dock your SRV with another ship.

Anyone remember the saga of the stranded commander? Or Bomba Luigi? The attention those stories got, and the urge players had, to go out there and meet and try to help those guys, stand testament that this kind of gameplay is desired.

It's probably been said already, but for those who don't have Horizons, I don't know how explorers could collect materials to make more probes, and therefore they need to be infinite without requiring a return to 'the bubble'.

covered already. ;)

Materials in asteroid belts
materials in USSes
actual probes salvaged from derelict ships in USSes

As already pointed out there's materials possibly via other routes, OR, probes to be generated via alterantive mechanics, eg: Fuel Scooping in Metallic Asteroid rings (or around Gas Giants of the right type)? ;)

Not really pitching it.

I'm having to spell it out because you're conflating grind with gameplay flow, they're really not the same thing.

I notice you didn't reply to that, rather went down the route of "stop pitching!"

This is the last time I'll say it. I understand what you're talking about. And yes, it still a grind. I didn't reply to that because I'm tired of repeating myself.

Don’t you have a beta to test to see for yourselves if it’s as bad as you’ve gotten yourselves worked up to believe? Or do you like green eggs and ham after all?

Speaking for myself, I'm not moaning because it's likely to be "bad"; simply that it's inconsistent and lazy and I don't need a beta to know that.

I'm not declaring infinite probes as bad. I fully understand the argument for them being implemented that way. But for me, I believe I can see more interesting gameplay outcomes if they were not.

ps: The "efficiency bonus score" grates with me though as very gamey (or lazy if you will)... And it's interesting to note that finite probes would be their own efficiency usage bonus ;)

I say again.

If you want finite probes, then I think it is only fair to add mass to fuel scoops, AFMUs & refinery.

For the sake of consistency of course.

It's almost like it's a game...

I prefer simulations to games generally... But each to their own...

As I said earlier in the thread, if we hit the probe efficiency bonus we need to get audio something like this :) :-

The option does not have to be synthesis, quite a bit of this thread has been spent discussing alternative non-crafting options.

For example, scooping various bodies to trigger probe auto-building.

Options for scooping would be :

- Gas giants scooping
- Ring scooping
- Those new lightning gas cloud objects (assuming what weve seen is not just a new Guardian site)

A scooping mechanic aligns closely with current explorer behaviour.

See above for urge to test, but here’s a strange thought: What if firing a probe triggers probe synthesis, sort of how the Multicannon Autoloader special effect works? Oh.... it already does that.

If you want a simulation tailored to your requirements, make your own. You're clearly in the minority here.
